Let's play X-COM and save the Earth!

I played this game years ago but I always lost and got the bad ending, probably because I never thought too much and planned anything out.

Yay(?) i'm a scout !

But i don't like my haircut  - i look like Guile.

As the other pointman I suggest we go out there and shoot the crap out of whatever we find while we still have a good chance at seizing the initiative, also the aliens are few and weak.

*oops* accidentally pulled the trigger on the rocket launcher out of nervousness. luckily the safety was still on....

I remember I can do some scouting from within the ship by turning the back row (Feanor and nodikus) in the ship and moving to the back, looking around. This reveals a lot more of the map but sadly we can't spot aliens from the craft.

After all those countless games I played years ago, after losing so many of those good soldiers for no reason, I honestly had no idea you could do that. :wow::dunno:
I'm sorry Ludmilla!!! :hammer2:

Its a fun game. Played it on all levels and won often. Just remember a few simple rules.

1. Medikits first, then armour. Don't want people dieing of fatal wounds in their nice shiny armour(you lose the armour when the soldier dies.)
2. The aliens will find you. So if need be leave a proxi gernade 1 square outside the alien crafts door they'll eventually step on it
3. Patience is a virtue. Remember even on turn 88 when your still waiting for the alien to come out you can hit the end turn button and out wait the computer
4. All the research mumbo jumbo about "Strongest Race", "Susceptible to laser", "Impervious to Explosives" can be overcome by overwhelming firepower.
5. Keep your soldiers fire lanes open and numerous. Don't want to walk around a corner shoot an alien and then realize you don't have the time to duck/run/shoot again
6. Suicide is always an option. Guy standing in group of aliens? Prime some gernades and hope they don't run away and then shoot you
7. Walls are just doors with a different kind of key. Can't get in through the front door cause there are to many aliens? Make your own door by blowing a hole in the roof or wall.(In UFO defense can only be done by Blaster Bombs but most explosives will work in TFTD)
8. When in doubt Blaster Bomb. To many baddies not enough guys to shoot them? Blaster Bomb. Sniper in a far away window taking out your men? Blaster Bomb. Suspect there is a alien in a corner cause you saw him run in that direction? Blaster Bomb. Not sure if the Alien is dead? Blaster Bomb. Sick and tired of losing men to Chryssalids? Blaster Bomb!

Theres probably more but you can make up your own.

Is this the enlistment office? I'd like to volunteer :salute:

Played this classic game a few times, but never finished it :(

With no nearby cover, sometimes the best move is to send the first two soldiers one step out onto the landing ramp, have them turn left or right, jump down to ground level, and take cover behind the Skyranger's landing gear. Move all other soldiers up on the first turn. Second turn, the first two out move up to the front landing gear for cover, the next two jump down to the rear landing gears. on the third turn, the first ones out can start moving to nearby cover, and the rest of the squad deploys in the same manner. If a soldier can't make it to cover in one turn, don't forget to save some movement points to kneel down.

If you haven't already seen it, check out this Unofficial Strategy Guide and FAQ from gamefaqs.com. Its very long but has lots of good details and ideas. This guide suggests first base in Europe for the reasons you chose, the ability to cover more high-funding countries.

An early research push is pretty much vital in X-com. There's tons of good techs you can already research, without grabbing one piece of alien hardware, plus there's ton of garbage tech you need to get.

I also like to go for a second listening post that is in travel distance from your starting base, so you can acually intercept, and prevent defections of important countries.. North America would be a logical choice for a second listening post.

:agree: You need to get Laser Pistols and Laser Rifles ASAP, as they don't require ammo packs which count against the 80-item limit for SkyRanger supplies and base defense equipment. Sell all the standard Pistols and Rifles and their ammo packs once you can replace them with the Laser versions.

I don't think you need the Heavy Laser right away, but IIRC, you may need to research that if you want to get laser cannons for Interceptors and Tanks, and base defense.

Give the Laser Pistols to the Scout/Grenadiers (those troops with high Time Units and Throwing Accuracy) and as backup weapons for the Auto-Cannon and Rocket Launcher troops (those with high Strength rating). Laser Rifles to everyone with high Firing Accuracy ratings.

After Laser Pistols and Laser Rifles, its probably best to go with Medi-Kits for the non-fatal wounds, then Motion Scanner. Give Motion Scanners to the Scouts, and build extras just for sale. IIRC, you can make a pretty good profit on Motion Scanners early in the game; have the Engineers buildt them when they have nothing better to build.

I must be the only person that standardized all of my men. Everyone had the same gear regardless of their strength or speed or accuarcy.

I tend to break up the loadouts to serve different purposes. And definitely only vets get the good armor, in case the new recruits wig out and need to be taken out.

Is this dead already?

Para is prolly out of his brainz for the holidays.

So short break

I get to live another day off a ridiculously high government salary? good times :D

Back from Christmas things, new year now ;)

Sorry about the delay chaps and chapesses.

Not liking the CFC skin over Christmas :)

Sorry for being late to the party, just saw this thread now :)

Great game, unrelated to this thread I just re-installed TFTD 2 weeks ago myself :)

In case some nameless grunt is still free I'd consider it an honour to lend him my name :please: Then I'll just hope that your style of playing doesn't resemble mine ('I can always hire new soldiers')

Not liking the CFC skin over Christmas :)
you know you don't have to use it, right?
