LINESII- Into the Darkness- Part II

Change.

He had once seen that night as a heroic action; they had told him those people were traitors, they were a silent invasion waiting for their compatriots to sail to our shores then march upon our cities and as we would go to meet them in battle, these traitors would stab us in the back.
They had abandoned their duty as Adari citizens and he must not abandon his duty as a Justiciar, the reasons rang hollow after all these years. He was older now and had risen as high in the ranks as he could, but only now as his long service drew to an end did that day plague him.
___________

The men watched as Harbinger Valkor strode into view; they had been given the order to form up in the courtyard matters of extreme importance the messenger said, Valkor was fitted in ceremonial armour, white platemail and a great white cape with gold linings.
He gazed over the men assembled and spoke.

___________

The people on street recognised and respected him, they bowed their heads or the more outgoing ones offered to buy him a drink.
As he made his way towards the merchant quarter he passed a fellow Justiciar and an initiate, Alfgar recognised neither, but the Justiciar did salute as he passed by. He heard the merchants trying to sell their wares to those people milling about, but the merchant stalls were slowly dwindling each month, ever since the blockade was enacted they had struggled and now with more and more people heading west the merchants were joining them, perhaps the city was dieing or just returning to a more manageable level.

Alfgar heard a familiar voice amidst the noise, Justiciar Viktor; he had been assigned to the speakers’ corner after working under Alfgar as an initiate for a time. Twice a week he makes a speech proclaiming a great victory for Adar and the sacrifices we must all make, whilst rousing the peoples anger, fear and trying to gain recruits.

“Our enemies do surround us but while the Justiciars guard these lands you shall be safe, we will not forsake our duty!
Did you loyal and faithful citizens of Adar take heed of the funeral march 2 days past? Remember those men, for they did sacrifice themselves for the greater good, whilst patrolling the borderlands the barbarians of the east, Zemorans, set them upon! They stood their ground allowing one of their own to escape and sound the alarm, we did push those heathens back.
We will not forget these attacks; we shall take the fight to them! We will not sit idly by while our Justiciars are killed and the safety of our people threatened, but we need time and greater numbers, listen to me citizens! We need brave souls in this war, know that Bane is watching even now! He will judge those worthy of paradise, will he judge you worthy while better men fight to keep you safe!”

The words of Viktor stirred up an old memory, like so many things did these days.
____________

Harbinger Valkor was ranting and raving, the order had been given and now he was steeling our hearts and rousing us into a frenzy.
“These Eldists are traitors, they conspire with our enemies, worship false gods and prepare, prepare to rise up when their masters from the old world arrive and enslave us!
We must be vigilante against all threats, and these people are certainly threats do not doubt that, The Arbiter himself has given this order, so it is of utmost importance you carry it out, do your duty Justiciars! Convert or Kill!"

____________

Alfgar gazed upon a temple of Bane, in his youth the place and the priests were a source of inspiration they gave him hope in those dark days when it seemed like an invasion would arrive any at time.
It looked different now, seemed to resemble a fort though a small one; the priests even carried knives and no longer seemed to speak of hope and a new beginning, but of war, death, fear and hatred.
Two Justiciar’s guarded the entrance, they were unusually relaxed chatting and joking with a few of the women who must have attended the earlier service, the men wore their ceremonial armour, it had been a proud day when he had received his, his family had been in attendance as had his wife Ariel…. He had left her, she didn’t understand what he saw, or remembered, when looking at his daughter too many memories.
_____________

The Eldists had all been forcibly moved only two days ago, he had wondered why at the time and now he knew, their loyalty was suspect they had placed their religion before their people, they are Adari no longer but enemies and they will be dealt with as such.
Alfgar and his comrades marched to the street they were designated to deal with, the traitors did try and question them as to what was happening he did see their fear, they knew the time had come their attack had failed and retribution was upon them.
A small child ran up to the Justiciar on his left, the boy was swatted aside like a fly, the Justiciar stopped to deal with the threat, he marched on the last he saw of them was the boy being flung across the street.

They finally stopped at their destination, the commander spoke up “You know what to do men, work in teams of two convert or kill man, women and child, don’t kill the babes they can given to a proper Adari family. Understood?”

“YES SIR!”

The men fanned out throughout the street, Alfgar and Ordulf dashed towards the nearest house as an elderly man confronted them. “What do you want this time? What is all this about! We have-”

His speech was cut short when Alfgars sword stabbed into him, Alfgar continued on “Alfgar! What-we don’t need to kill them, we can convert!”

Alfgar barged through the door; the occupants were startled out of their prayers. The man was cut down as he rose to confront the two men, “HENRIK NOO! WHY! Why are you doing this I don’t understand-” “SHUT UP…you Eldists are TRAITORS ALL, you betray your people and side with the enemy”
“WHAT ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS IS MADNESS, YOU KIL-” she didn’t see it coming it was a quick death, better then a traitor deserved.
It seemed as though Alfgar was possessed Ordulf tried reasoning with him “Alfgar listen to me, we can convert these girls ok? Their too young to know anything”.
“They are traitors! We kill KILL! AND KILL AGAIN!”
“NO! I WONT LET YOU!”
Ordulf had manoveured himself between Alfgar and the two sobbing girls, the two girls clung to his legs their seemingly only remaining protector.
“Alfgar…these aren’t enemies or traitors their just two scared girls, you…you killed their parents”
“Not our enemies? Would you swat a fly yet leaves its maggots there to fester! No! You wipe them out in one fell swoop, more so now as they will want revenge… I could call out for help Ordulf? What would our comrades see I wonder?”

The light of realisation struck his eyes, he would be cut down with the others this night, called a traitor by his fellows, was defending these girls worth it? Was defending them even a noble deed? Alfgar seemed so sure of himself, while he was in turmoil.

“Don’t throw away your life Ordulf for these worthless dogs, don’t dishonour your family or forsake your duty, you promised to protect the Adari people, these things are not Adari you owe them nothing. Kill them or stand aside!”

He stood aside.

grimreaper_by_a_alvarsson.jpg

Greetings mortals, I am the Grim Reaper. Perhaps you have heard of me? Of course it would be by other names. The Red Lady is one of my names, though I am hardly a lady at all. Do not misunderstand, I am not a man either. I am the Grim Reaper. I have no gender. Unlike you mortals, I do not reproduce. Creating life is not my job. Taking it is my job. It is a grim job.

Ha, a grim job. That is a good one don’t you think? Ah but of course you wouldn’t find it funny. You are not the Grim Reaper.

You must be wondering, what is it like to be the Grim Reaper?. Ah, words could not describe it. Being what I am is such a thrill. It is like the sex you humans experience when you create life. Like that. Only for eternity. You mortals cannot comprehend this pleasure that I feel when I take your souls. It is a constant, since you humans die so often. You’re short lives are only shortened by your frail bodies and even weaker minds. I know of thousands of species that live longer than you. You are, by all accounts, pathetic and stupid. However, you are interesting. You fight your little wars and fight amongst yourselves. You are truly good to me. Such pleasure you give me with each of your deaths. Especially the ones called the Lengel. They have given such pleasure with the death and war they make upon their fellow mortals. What beautiful people they are indeed. But now they die, and only a weakling rises from their ashes. One who displeases me very much. They do not kill needlessly like the Lengel. They only concern themselves with hunting and foolish games of strength.

Ah but the Gorin. They are something entirely different. What a wonderful breed of human they are. With their black skin, as black as the night, and their strong spirits. It is a true feast when I take their souls. How kind they are to me, how they give me such pleasure. When I saw the Gerber, I thought for sure these people would be my loyal subjects and bring more death to me. But the Gorin, they destroyed these people and by doing gave me such waves of pleasure. Oh Dula you cannot even imagine what a year that was. When they began to round up all the Gerber and slaughter them. One by one. Nay two by two! Nay!! Hundreds by thousands. Oh spirits yes come to me! Let me bask in your warm embrace. What wonderful people these Gorin are!! Oh I shall honor them indeed, I shall honor them when they come to my realm with a thousand praises. So many souls they have brought to me, such pleasure I have experienced. Oh I must visit this Lord Kaiser, this leader of theirs to thank him myself.

I owe him that much

Excerpt from the Great Archives, Aldisir

Here follows an account of the northern expedition, year 188 since the Founding. This account was written by scholars in the years following the expedition; the logs of the original expedition have been lost to time.

The lands to the north were desolate and barren. This was known from time immemorial to the Kelia people. First it was dry, too dry for any sort of productive agriculture as was had in the valley and along the coast, and then it was too cold, colder than the mountaintops. Or so the old myths said. However, in recent years, news has come to Kelios of potentially fertile lands to the north along a river, lands uninhabited yet awaiting humans and knowledge of the Path. Kelios was ready.

A small expedition set forth under the stewardship of one of the more renowned traveling Guides of Kelios, Harsadal. Harsadal had been a part of early missionary efforts in Tsaya, and from this he had acquired a great deal of experience in traveling in unknown lands. The Council commissioned to him a group of soldiers numbering less than 100 (for a small band could travel more quickly) to explore what lay north of Kelios. Supplies were gathered and the expedition set forth.

The initial route of the expedition took it from Keliosir to the northwest, traveling along the base of the valley and then up into the mountains. Farmers hailed the explorers from their fields, but soon civilized lands began to fall away. The expedition crossed the last of the passes of the mountains and there the borders of Kelios, coming upon the dry lands to the north.

The lands to the north were not so forbidding as common knowledge would have the people believe—indeed, it was fairly easy for the band to supply itself off the land for quite some time. However, it was an extremely nondescript landscape. Trees were few and far between, and little grew beneath them, and the short grasses of the plains swept before them. The soil became more sandy and less suitable for agriculture as they traveled north, and the weather did not warm even as spring gave way to summer.

Then, rather suddenly, they came upon a river. It was not a particularly great river, but it flowed, not southwards, but north across the plain. The lands beside it were wet and rich, though but a very short distance away they were as dry as all the rest of the land. Thus it was that the Hiersid River was discovered, and a new chapter in Kelia history opened.

Hmm, you're right about the map. Glad I have it stored. I still don't believe you, though, since aid to Sintonia is still considered "invading" me.

To Nontin and The Citadel
From UoA

On the map we have shown our claim for the southern region. We hope that you will uphold it as it is not much land. We will not interfere in the other areas.

You're proposed land is no proplem with our people.
