Update 20- Years 1312 to 1447: Waning Storm

Following the unification of Khemri and Kehexou at the end of the Khemri War, a peace came to the cradle for the first time in most peoples lifetimes. The United Kingdom of Khemri and Kehexou quickly asserted itself as a dominant power, its alliance with the Lengels cementing its existence.

A few minor Kehex generals in Tekrehexou briefly continued fighting Khemri, but to no avail. Other than this, however, this large nation’s early history has been remarkably stable.
(-1000 UKKK Spearmen, -1000 Swordsmen)

With the resumption of international trade, Khadon has resumed being the gateway to goods entering and leaving Khemri. New religious tolerance for Oundainty has once again made Kexoudau a center of public interest.
(+Khadon and Kexoudau Economic Centers)

The end of Gorinese trade with the east has ended the long profitable trade routes going through Dathan.
(-Dathan Economic Center)

Croyodon is quietly developing, and expanding northwards. But, as Gorin begins to envelope the nation, Croyodon’s own culture is weakening. Something must be done, lest it share the fate of Skilv’so…

An exploration force sent across the Kaosian Ocean did not return.
(-1 Culture, -5 Galleys)

Gorin has consolidated and continues to domestically improve its nation. Attempts to assimilate the Shalamari have failed, as they have already set up a strong culture within a culture in Gorin.

However, the assimilation of Skilv’so went far more successfully. For centuries, the nation had been adopting more of Gorin’s culture. Despite an upswing in leadership skills in recent years, the people welcomed Gorin with open arms.

Or at least, all of the Skilv’so who were in the nation at the time. A good portion of the army was raiding Nurmafer at the time of the annexation. Many returned, not upset to become part of the Great empire of Gorin, but the more nationalistic refused.
(Skilv’so joins Gorin, except for 6000 Spearmen)

Nurmafer, despite signing peace with Myocaca and Guangfei, was still in a very bad situation. The Swade Ascendancy was filled with a blinding desire for vengeance. Calling upon much of their population to take up arms, the Swades launched a glorious crusade to liberate their holy land. Nurmafer’s forces were too far spread, and a furious Swade strike at their occupied capital broke through Nurmaferi lines and retook the city.
(+Swade Religious Center)

Nurmafer massed its remaining army, but things were rapidly disintegrating for them. Skilv’so raids were isolating the island capital of Anarafar, and there was so little force to resist on the Nurmaferi coast that Skilv’so was able to actually OCCUPY the territory they had originally planned to raid.

The battle that signaled the demise of Nurmafer was at Jarade. The remaining army faced off against a powerful Swade force augmented by thousands of armed fanatic civilians. While the Swades took high casualties, Nurmafer was soundly defeated. Their remaining forces retreated out of the Swade Ascendancy, and peace was signed.

Nurmafer had been incapable of dealing the one final blow that would have broken the Swades. Now, its destruction became imminent. People lost faith in their kings, and turned to other leaders. Some even welcomed the Skilv’so army, who now had no land due to the Gorinese annexation of their old homes. The Skilv’so General, Tobi, established a new Skilv’so nation in Nurmafer.

The old Nurmaferi royal family remained in Anarafar, fortified and safe. But their country was now beyond help. Anarchy reigned, as various lords battled against each other. Skilv’so remained the only other alternative.

Emor, terribly weakened by the Valin Crusade of Vengeance, offered its surrender to the Lengels in exchange for the right of self-government within the Lengel nation.

Empty Southern Shalamari was ceded to Gerber, for services rendered to the Lengels. Gerber settlers soon began to fill the lands.

In the east, the Tristarian rebellion quite literally collapsed out of fear. A few minor battles were fought, and most Tristarians fled to Kerania or to Lengel lands.

The remaining Tristarians, most of whom had not rebelled, were deported anyway.
(40 000 Gerber (Tristarian) population to Kerania, 20 000 Gerber (Tristarian) population to Lengels)

The first Toghol-King, having ruled now for several decades, grew more and more insane and megalomaniacal as his years wound down. He organized public stonings of the few remaining minorities, and clearly established the Gerbers as the only race worthy of living within his borders.

He brought around the reconstruction of Cirta, naming it Togholirta after himself. He forced the reconstruction of the devastated country’s infrastructure. Several razed cities were rebuilt, and fortresses were scattered through the country.

Under the reign of his son, the powers of the Church and much of the nobility were crushed. The Toghols now had absolute control over Gerber.

Tellium is quickly developing into a powerful commercial nation. Major trade routes are now being directed to the port city of Andama.
(+Andama Economic Center)

To many, it is amazing that the Svitzers lasted this long. Many others consider Aryie to be close enough to Svitzerland to be considered a continuation of the same nation. Regardless, the nation known as Svitzerland has reached the end of its tenure.

Verta and Tellium signed an alliance and occupied the area. A resistance existed, but it was utterly insignificant. Ironically, these Bladeists now find themselves being forced to convert to Oneism. Most of the population, sick of the Swade Ascendancy for taking everything it produced, had little hard feelings about leaving their faith.
(-Svitzerland)

The Lengels, after taking several years to rest, resumed their conquering spree. Their new allies, the UKKK, struck at the Northern Swade Ascendancy. The Swades were ready for it.

Numerous horse traps and other defenses defeated the invaders first waves. But the numerical might of Khemri would eventually win out. The northern bastions were conquered, and the Swades fell back to the mountains.
(-1000 Swade Archers, -500 Bigjaur Riders, -2000 Khemri Horse Archers, -1000 Khemri Spearmen)

Meanwhile, another large Khemri force landed in former Nurmafer, discovering that it had already collapsed. But Khemri was still perfectly able to take advantage of this. Many of the anarchic states fell to Khemri’s forces with little fight, although the inland states held out.
(-500 Khemri Royal Guards, -500 Khemri Horse Archers)

At this time, the Swade army returning northwards crossed the Blade Range and confronted the Khemri army. A vicious battle was fought, but the Khemri troops were more numerous, stronger, and less fatigued. The Battle of Samnade Pass resulted in the destruction of a good portion of the remaining Swade Army, although Khemri took a harsh blow as well.
(-2000 Swade Swordsmen of Divine Enlightenment, -1000 Bigjaur Riders, -1000 Khemri Royal Guards, -500 Khemri Spearmen)

It seems that every nation from Nurmafer to Emor is falling into chaos.

For yet another Swade force, was launched at the occupied Kehex mainland holdings. The Lengels had yet to establish a presence there, and the Emorans didn’t suspect a thing. Another Swade strike reached for the heart of Emor, but this time the defenders were prepared. Damas fell in a desperate battle, but Krenel barely managed to hold out.

Then, Myocaca struck from the south. It was virtually undefended, and fell rapidly. Soon, all that remained of Emor was the besieged city of Krenel.

As the king sat on his ramid with his broad sword in his belt and holy spear of Fasra in his hand he was gripped for battle.

He now sat as ready for the end. For his final act that would make him as great as his grandfather of old. Of his ancestors. His deeds may be remembered and songs sung of the days to follow this day. The camp sat in line as men put away their belongings and prepared for the great war that was soon to be waged.

The king stood by his two sons and looked down on his men. The Dragon of the South stood by him. The king would not challenge the generals opinion unless it meant the death of the army. The general's name was Araguern. A man of defiance.

He was proud to have him on his side. The Dragon looked down at his men and turned to his king for permission to speak and was granted it.

"We stand at the end of days my friends. We may fall in the coming hours. I will not lie to you. The odds are against us. The lengels are fierce. No army has yet stood against them and called the word Victory.

We may die this day. But will we not die proud. Will we not fight like men. We will give the bastards hell. The men of the dualty pass stood alone. They stood all alone as everything around them fell and when the lengels came they gave them hell." The King had heard of that battle but never knew the final outcome

"We will not let their deaths to try and stop the lengels be in vein. We will fight on. We will fight in the fields, We will fight on the oceans, We will fights on the beaches, We will fight in the forests, We will fight in the towns and streets, We will fight in the rivers, We will fight in the mountains, We will never surrender!"

The men cried out in cheer. And then all was silent again.

"I wish for all of you to one day return home. You will all come to doubt perhaps. But never forget your freedom men. This is your freedom. Fight for your freedom men. Never give in to the darkness. The waves is coming. And I will face it no matter the consequences, Will you?"

The crowd cheered.

The king walked off to look for his wife in her tent. She lay in cold sleep. "Abisura"

"Yes, I am sorry. I just had a cold dream. I stood upon a cliff looking out into the horizon. A massive black wave fell over the mountains. It was so frightening, but I could not move. It swept across and all in its path was wiped. I just stared as it came."

She then fell into unconsciousness.

The king stared at his wife in sleep. She was alive, but scared. He walked out and grabbed the general by the collar

"Why do you promise such foolery?"

"What would you have me do milord. Their bravery lies on the edge of a knife. It is all they have. I want them to fight and i will follow them to the ends of the earth if I have to to show my dedication to them. If this is to be our end, I would wish it to be such an end that would be worthy of rememberance" The general than walked off from his majesty. The general stormed into his tent and prepared for battle.

The queen then came out and spoke

"You men may think of me as a frail women and ptiful queen, but I have the stomach of a king"

The men cheered. They began the march. It was to begin.

----------------------------------------------------

The king sat upon his horse as he stood looking down on the burning city. He looked back at his men who all stood in line at arms ready to fight. He turned to his to Araguern and said "What happened to the men of the dualty pass?" "

Dead to the last man"

"Yes!" The king snarled and brought up his spear and cried the call of Myocaca.

"Freedom this day men. This is for your freedom.

FREEDOM!"

The men all cheered the call "freedom!" They charged Onward to the thunder they charged. They charged.

As the Lengel horde raced south, its fleet and that of its allies, led by the Vertan Oceanus Terracius, confronted the one of the Bladeists.

The Myocacan admiral believed that the Lengel forces were in these ships, and made their destruction an imperative.

So the great Sea Battle of Krenel was fought. Myocaca and the Swades fought desperately, but the skill and numbers of their enemies was their destruction.

Both fleets were devastated, and the Lengel alliance achieved near complete naval superiority.
(-22 Swade Bladeremes, -10 Myocacan Galleys, -100 Myocacan Furor Carina, -20 Lengel Sloops, -20 Vertan Triremes)

Early amphibious landings of Vertan troops were repelled by Bladeist forces, and no more were tried.
(-500 Vertan Spearmen)

Finally, the Lengel horde arrived. Doom approached. The Swades fought desperately, but they lacked forces to counter the Lengels. Both the Myocacans and Swades desperately retreated back into the jungle.

Emor was liberated, and then the Lengels turned their sights on the Bladeist homeland. A destructive blow was dealt on Myocaca, who was pushed back all the way to its capital. It seemed like the invaders could not be stopped by man.

It was not man that stopped them.

In the Lengel ranks, a disease began to spread. Some believed it was the humid jungle air, Bladiest poisons… but regardless, it was killing off the Lengel horsemen. For all of their vaunted strength, it seemed that the Lengels could not defeat an illness that stood in their way.

The Lengels pulled back, leaving Davarian forces to hold the line. The Bladeists were spared for the time being, by the grace of the Blademaster.

Orum quietly expands.

Gamorrea has quickly consolidated its power. Resisters to its rule have been exiled, trade has been reopened with the south, and the construction of infrastructure has begun. The northwest is advancing out of barbarism at last.
(+Thula Pax Economic Center)

In the far north, a great migration is taking place. The Merhai clans had been embroiled in warfare, resulting in the victory of the Fairhelt Clan over all of its adversaries. Those who resisted left, following the banner of Kahir the Fox.

They wandered for a great time, until coming to a valley. It was warm, compared to where the Merhai had come from. They settled and began to build a new nation. Recently, southern expeditions have brought the Merhai into contact with the nation of Ikki, and the northern Lengels.

Ikki accepted a few Malkavian refugees, before the Gamorrean government clamped down and prevented them from leaving the country.

Then, a disaster struck. Above Enryakuji, a mountain burst into flames. An evacuation started, but landslides blocked off the passes out of the city. Fire and ash buried the city, killing thousands, including much of the government. The nation was about to collapse when the military took control and calmed the populace.

When the dust had cleared expeditions to the former capital showed it to be completely gone. The fire from the mountains had cooled to stone. Ash covered the rest.

The Ikki realized that this was a sign. So no rebuilding took place. A new city was built further upriver away from the disaster zone, and a new government was gathered.

Great fears of a Lengel attack at this moment of weakness existed, but were unrealized.
(-Enryakuji, -1000 Spearmen, -1 Economy Point next turn)

Exilsium has finally expanded to own all of the island of Equilibrium at last. Some groups have been sent to the Citadel and the Mainland, to learn about the world and more specifically, Iron Working.

Trinlin has begun to consolidate its vast lands. Forces were assembled, and barbarians were pushed out of Trinlin’s lands. The southern invaders fell apart fairly quickly, as their leaders were more interesting in fighting and pillaging than conquering and nation building. But the people surrounded by Trinlin’s settlement, who called their lands ‘Magland’ fought much more strongly. After threatening to push out the invasion forces, a deal was made. Magland would maintain local authority, but officially be part of Trinlin. Both sides were rather pleased with the outcome.

Guangfei has worked to solve a potential religious problem in Qingdao by forming another splinter group of Oneism- Way of the One. It encourages free interpretation of religion, and freedom from the secular control of New Veritas. Many ‘Valfei’ as Oneist Guangfei are known as, have converted, though the more fervent have refused.

To further show its goodwill, Guangfei demilitarized Qingdao and the lands northeast of the Dadong Range.

New Veritas seemed to be appeased. A peace existed for some time.

Then, New Veritas, without warning, struck. But not with Iron. With silver.

Merchants sold vast quantities of stockpiled silver to Guangfei simultaneously. Too much currency existed for too little goods. This would have been disastrous had it not been for one of Emperor Hu’s reforms, standardizing the costs of products. Instead, there was merely a problem of many Guangfei ceasing to work and living off their new ‘fortunes’.

There was some minor economic damage, but Guangfei had gone dangerously close to an economic collapse. One law of Emperor Hu had saved the nation.

It was a few weeks after the silver delivery that Veritas attacked.

One force in the north contacted the tribes in the lands north of Guangfei. They offered them the chance to join them and attack Guangfei.

There is a good chance that these men would have agreed earlier. But recently, Guangfei had begun to open relations with them, giving them gifts and helping to civilize them. The barbarians were now much less willing to fight their southern neighbours.

Despite this, a small group still joined New Veritas. Scuffles broke out, as some barbarians called others ‘traitors’ and similar things. The fighting, incidentally, brought Guangfei’s attention. A force was dispatched to investigate.

By the time that it arrived, the battles were over, and they met a comparatively large New Veritasian and barbarian force. Here, Host-Lord Vandrios made the official declaration of war against Guangfei. The small Guangfei force was annihilated.

Vandrios then raced towards the city of Guanzhong. When his force of roughly 2500 reached the Guangfei capital, he was greatly surprised to not discover the chaos he had expected.

He struck quickly at the city. The Emperor was evacutated across the river, however, and after a difficult battle Vandrios was forced to retreat, joining Stratikrator Panteras in the occupation of Qingdao.

The aging Stratikrator Panteras destroyed the small Exodian fleet of Guangfei and quickly occupied Qingdao. He didn’t receive the support from the Valfei that he had expected, though they did not rebel seriously. Shortly after the occupation, Panteras passed away peacefully.

The third and deadliest strike of New Veritas was in the south. Under the leadership of the young Host-Lord Gregorian, a fleet of Veritasian River Boats cut off the river connection between Eastern Shangei and the rest of Guangfei. The people of Bandong and Faitei, who had considerable resentment towards the government of Guanzhong for several reasons, such as the ‘disappearances’ of the lords of the cities who had traveled to the capital and general economic discrimination against the region. With the help of New Veritas, they rebelled and established the new Kingdom of Shangei.

Now came the Guangfei counterattack. Many Guangfei soldiers and volunteers stormed over the Dadong range and quickly retook the land around Qingdao. The disorganization following the death of Panteras prevented a strong defense at the mountains, so the forces retreated to chokepoints in the east and to the city of Qingdao. This front has now stabilized. Qingdao holds out due to total Veritasian naval superiority, and enough forces exist in the East to prevent an easy Guangfei breakthrough.

In the south, a smaller Guangfei army occupied much of the rural areas in the Kingdom of Shangei, but was unable to capture the cities, due to strong resistance and Veritasian strength in water. This front too, is stalemated.

By extending an olive branch to the northern barbarians, standardizing the prices of goods, making religious reforms and by signing a white peace with Nurmafer, Emperor Hu well deserved the title ‘The Fortunate’. While he may not have known it at the time, his actions were the salvation of his mighty nation.

What will happen next? Perhaps a suitable peace can be made. But Guangfei may not forgive its rival’s treachery. Time will show all.

North of this conflict on the coast, the nation of Aryie, formerly known as South Svitzerland, has remained neutral. It continues to expand, grow, and prosper under Priest Azlan and his successors.

The Northern New World states have been going through a quite interesting time, filled with politics, religions, and plots regarding both.

Norvalin has been strengthening as a culture and nation. It has been decreed that all Oneists in the country must make a pilgrimage to Unias once in their lives, a further source of unity for the Norvalin people.
(+Unias Cultural Center)

Relations were warm between Arcadia and Norvalin, until one incident. Norvalin had begun to aggressively expand its belief system into Arcadia. Their differing views on several things, such as the role of the Church in relation to those of the people.

In an attempted cultural takeover, large groups of converted Pirian Oneists in northern Arcadia pledged allegiance to Norvalin, but many others retained their loyalties. Then, Norvalin troops entered the region and prepared to swear it in as a new province, encouraging the rest of Arcadia to follow suit.

The rest of Arcadia didn’t. Military forces moved into the region and demanded that the Norvalins left. Not wanting to fight, Norvalin returned to its original borders, bringing the converted Arcadians with them.

Since the ‘Venix Incident’, relations between the two nations have been very strained, to say the least. Norvalin is apologetic about the military forces, but maintains that Arcadia should join it. Arcadians are angered, and see Norvalin as being expansionist and sinful.
(4000 Population from Arcadia to Norvalin)

Nontin has been quickly adopting Pirian Oneism from the Arcadians. This and increasing naval trade have started to improve Nontin’s weak economy.
(+Cuastia Economic Center)

The Citadel is working tirelessly to open up the New World. A naval expedition was sent north of the Straits of Ice, but it failed to confirm if the two land masses separated by it are connected. Many ships were lost, but the implacable Citadel explorers returned by land, surviving mostly due to Orum’s hospitality. The area explored may be a body of water separating the two continents, or it may merely be a bay.
(-5 Galleys)

Both the Citadel and Arcadia have founded port cities in the areas between the ‘Settlers’ (as the indigenous old worlders are called) and the indigenous inhabitants of the new world.

Rascirai has renamed itself Adar, citing that ‘It’s not a good name but its better then the other one’. After expanding for some time, a fervent Banist named Wulfnoth rose to the position of Arbiter, the supreme leader of Adar. He quickly enacted programs against the New Eldist minority. Then, he seized several Citadel traders and tortured them for information about Arcadia’s ‘Sinister Acts’. The man told the Adari torturers all that he knew, which was that Arcadia had done nothing sinister. The unfortunate Citadeler died soon after his torturers increased the pain level, suspecting he was hiding something.

Then, the New Eldist suppression turned into a full fledged pogrom. Many New Eldists were converted by force, others refused and were tortured and killed.

When news of this managed to leak to the Citadel, the response was outrage. An embargo was instantly declared against Adar, and a heated debate began over whether there are situations where the Citadel is justified in ignoring its pacifist vows.

Zemora has offered its support to the Citadel, should it be required.

The civilizing influence of the Citadel and knowledge exchanges have caused the Zemorans to settle down, founding the city of Zem Kamar.
(+Zem Kamar)

Tir Tairngire has been welcoming to New Eldists, but it is clear that they will not be converted. Pacifism is a thing too strange for their culture.

Domestically, the nation is beginning to settle down. Militarism is ceasing to be an internal problem as much as it has been in the past.

Passing east past Chancotol and Sanx, we come to the young nation of Kelios. While it has formed more recently than its western counterparts, it has advanced far faster. Already, it has developed cities and some urban society.

The people of Kelios fervently believe in spreading the knowledge of the spiritual ‘path’ that they all follow. While this religion is followed completely in the nation’s home valley, outside it often conflicts with the established Divotheistic beliefs of the original inhabitants of the region.

Further to the east of Kelios is the warrior culture of Tsaya. These people recently came south over the mountains and began to conquer themselves a nation. The Tsayans’ physical similarity to the people of Kelios suggests that they may be two branches of the same race.

Regardless of their shared history, Tsaya couldn’t be more different. The Tsayans are largely atheist, believing in no gods whatsoever, and are highly militaristic. They have been regularly pushing the barbarians on their eastern border back, causing a domino effect which has recently forced barbarians into the lands of Aithea. Long centuries of weak leadership have stagnated the government, and an organized response to this incursion has not yet happened.

Finally, on the eastern edge of the civilized world is the maritime Ida’an’i’i. From Ol’o (first place) they have built several settlements on the neighbouring islands. The nation is rather decentralized, with each island having distinct cultures. But excellent communication helps to keep the nation united.

*****

On the northern frontiers of the Lengel nation, a rebellion was brewing. Many Lengel purists disagreed with the path of the Lengelzai. The adoption of other cultures was too much. The Lengels should be conquerors, not nation-builders.

These purists watched as the blood of the Lengelzai was polluted with weaker peoples, how they adopted their ways, even changed their religion! Now, much of the army isn’t even Lengel!

So these like-minded Lengels formed a group, and gathered a following.

Now, they have struck. Much of the Lengel north has declared independence from its southern counterpart, and begun to reclaim lands for the true Lengels. Lengels remaining loyal to the Lengelzai have managed to form a front against these rebels, but it will not last for long…

Civil War has come to the largest and strongest Empire in history.

Here is our proposal.

Treaty of Saenium

1. Veritas and Guangfei cease hostilities.
2. Guangfei will cede the province of Valfei, including the coast, Qingdao, and the foothills of the White or Badong Mountains, to New Veritas.
3. New Veritas will pay, over the next two turns, a sum up to but not exceeding 2 economy points.
4. Guangfei will recognize Shangei as a semi-autonomous province within Guangfei.

We believe these conditions to be reasonable, and within the bounds of a fair treaty. The people of Valfei will be joined with New Veritas, at any and all costs.

It grieves us to see such suffering, between the descendents of our greatest ally, and the descendents of our countrymen. Many harsh words and harsh actions have taken place...but let us not forget our blessings. We all follow the One.

New Veritas believes that this strife is due to disunity within the Church. Pirian Oneism, The Way of the One, the Path of the One, these are all facets of the original, One-given, Church of the One. We must put forward a unified front, a unified religion, for as the world becomes greater, we must carry the torch of our faith into new lands, as Veritas did in the past.

Therefore, the Uniarch has seen fit to convene a Concilium Unium, or a One's Council. We invite Oneists from New Veritas, Norvalin, Arcadia, Valfei, Exilsium, Verta, Tellium, Kalmar, and any other faithful believers from across the world, to Redemption.

Here we will work out our theological differences, and create a new, unified Church, with a faith can be practiced without division, and without heresy. Many of our "differences" merely come from different translations. If we act now to preserve our faith, we can fulfill the One's task which He laid down to the First Elder at the beginning of time, and together, we can truly be the Light of the World.

Let the Redemption Council begin.

May Light be your arbiter,

Assemblum Popularum Nova Veritasum

As you are the established masters of Emor and Myocaca, we would like to settle a small grievence that we have been nursing for some years. The tip of the peninsula facing south, in what was once Myocaca, held a colony, belonging to Veritas. We would like to reassert our claim on this small area, called Sempronia. In return, we would be happy to lend some of our experienced naval forces to your campaigns.
