Liq-01 Flaming Barbies on the Grill.

Nice write-up, Luv (as usual!)

* Notice the cultural border being pressed against Sparta. If we don't take Athens, we may have to drop a culture bomb on Sparta or risk losing that city to culture pressure. And I wanted to use the great artist to discover a tech. Hmmm...

Are cultural reflips enabled in this game? If not, a culture bomb would be wasted here as it will never flip back to Alex.

Izzy now has Guilds? :eek: This gives her access to her UU (conquistador). Stop toying with Alex and get Engineering from him pronto so that we can get those pikemen online! This takes priority over barbs and Alex!

I think we should raze from here on... we've got more than enough cities to outproduce Izzy as it is. Let's go for conquest!

Got it... but Liq if you catch this before about 10 PM PST then play.

Guys, I just looked, and we want to be using our War Elephants against Izzy's conquistadors. They're strength 10 with 2 first strikes and +50% against melee units. This will utterly destroy the 6 strength pikes, +100% against mounted. It'll be 15 vs 12 in Izzy's favour, and thats before first strikes. Only time we want to use those pikes is on tricky terrain or city defense.

War Elephants are 8 strength, +50% against mounted, so it will be 12 vs 10 in our favour, before first strikes. Of course elephants don't get defensive bonuses, so they'd be best on assault or mobile defense, which I assume is what we want to be doing.

man sick and work, just skip liq please... oh you skipped me.

so sorry about flaking but not only did I have the flu, I was forced (uh huh) to get drunk at the superbowl party and well that just made me feel worse lol.

let me eat something lol.

lol just saw merz's post, 10 03 pst!!!! hehe ask for a skip, liq is in a really bad state. the flu is alot like being drunk but without all the fun.

oh and silver quoting Liquidated from fs-1 in his sig really scares me

our money issues sucks lol..

IMO make a shrine in bombay then agressively pump out missonariess to convert our towns for the gold.

I'll take stock now and say my plan.

Cheers!

Take it easy Liq! No need to kill yourself for the SG. Flu really sucks, so don't worry bout it. You should probably sleep for a day or two :p.

oh and silver quoting Liquidated from fs-1 in his sig really scares me

lol. I had to pick and choose what to quote. Almost everything you say is halarious! It was a toss up between that, and the "start a theatre in Timbuk, and whip it on account of who the hell cares if we lose 10 population or gain another angry person".

as for silvers avitar, looks like it lost a ton of weight!

Yeah, I saw a documentary on Qin Shi Huang, about how he was paranoid and stuff. The actor who played him did a good job, and he looks quite angry in that shot :p. Suits my warmongering style well.

K I am actually playing now. In 5 turns our army gets disbanded unless I can figure a brilliant way out... :eek:

Pre-turn (310 left):

Oh man, we're in deep doodoo. Even at 0%/0% we're losing 21 gpt, and have only 139 gold in the bank. Our army gets disbanded in a half dozen turns unless I can figure something out. For now I set research to 0% to give me those half dozen turns.

Time for peace. Athens would be nice to grab, but it ain't gonna happen. Sweet, we get TWO techs for taking this clown to the cleaners:

CaptureWiz087.jpg

The war is over. Hmm, ending the war brings our bleeding down to -12 gpt at 0%.

Let's look at our cities. Minoan wants courthouse, not library. I'll be able to whip it in a few turns. Delphi should be growing and working more of its towns, it's OK if the courthouse slows down here. The same in Therm and Pharsalos. I whip the theatre at Sparta. I fire one scientist in Rexburg so it can grow. Wow, looks like we'll eventually need a courthouse in our capital, minus 6 maintenance, this must be new to the patch.

Why is our Heroic Epic city on a temple? :smoke: We're gonna need units soon to start razing stuff. I put it on mace. Liquidia on colloseum at two under happiness? :smoke: I put it on cat. No reason to spend 25 turns on a market at Eagles Nest, it will only gain us 25% of 11 gold. It's put on cat. I whip the house at Two Rivers, I don't care about the lost pop, this city has no cottages to work anyways. I put Bombay on War Elephant instead of library, why a library on a city that makes 3 commerce?

After all this MM we can pull 10% research at -9 per turn. Liberalism is 51 turns, ugh. This will improve very quickly however.

I'm gonna move military down near Izzy's borders, since she is our next victim. The army will be built up at Two Rivers.

Turn 1 (309 left):

Hmm, we have a Great Prophet shoegazing somewhere in-between two cities. I use him to start a Golden Age. I don't know where the other Great Person is or what he is, but I don't care.

We're now at 69 gpt. I'm gonna use the 10 turns of GA to build up about 700 gold, keeping research at 10%.

Two Rivers house -> rax

Sparta theatre -> house

Turn 2 (308 left):

Bugger, I let a barb sword kill a worker near Delpi. Grr.

I notice the barbs have macemen now! Ugh:

CaptureWiz088.jpg

KB mace -> mace

Rockland monastery -> missionary

Turn 3 (307 left):

KB mace -> cat

Liquidia cat -> cat

Bombay phant -> phant

Delhi Hindu monastery (?) -> phant

Turn 4 (306 left):

KB cat -> pike

Rock missionary -> missionary

Eagles Nest cat -> cat

Two Rivers rax -> granary

Corinth comes online at a staggering -11gpt, put on house.

KB pike -> pike

Liquidia cat -> mace

Now this is bizarre... Izzy is actually willing to convert to another religion if we turn more of our cities??? I thought this was impossible unless you were friendly with her... which we aren't. Anyways, it won't matter soon, that's for sure:

CaptureWiz089.jpg

(I know you guys will like the cropping job I did on this shot).

I renegotiate our wine deal with her with corn for 7 gpt instead of 5 gpt.

Turn 5 (305 left):

Rexburg uni -> chouse

Rock missionary -> mace

EN cat -> cat

Bombay phant -> library (since I notice it has only 1 turn on it left)

Turn 6 (304 left):

KB mace -> mace

Turn 7 (303 left):

Bombay library -> phant
Dehli phant -> phant

Turn 8 (302 left):

KB mace -> mace

I'm gonna declare on Izzy in probably two turns. Moving units for a big stack attack from Two Rivers towards Toledo, which will then swing west, and building up a smaller stack to take Valencia then Santiago near SandM. This will be a conquest victory guys, so burn burn burn!

Turn 9 (301 left):

I declare on Izzy. I'm gonna use the phants to pillage with, and the main stack is gonna march on Toledo. The SandM stack will be ready in a couple turns.

CaptureWiz090.jpg

I'm not gonna report city production stats anymore, it's boring and most are on military.

Turn 10 (300 left):

Wow no response for Izzy yet... I move the SoD next to Toledo.

Turn 11 (299 left):

Unreal, I've never seen as AI build so few cottages in this game as Izzy has. My phants have literally nothing to pillage.

Golden Age has ended, gold is at a manageable -20 per turn at 10% reseearch.

Bombard Toledo, will take it next turn.

Turn 12 (298 left):

The Battle for Toledo. I sacrifice two cats. Bigman is up with a 90% chance to win... can he dig it?

CaptureWiz091.jpg

Score! The new cadets do the cleanup and Toledo is razed:

CaptureWiz092.jpg

Turn 13 (297 left):

I start bombarding Valencia with a baby stack.

I'm moving on Salamanca and Zaragoza next, and building up a few units near Vitoria.

Turn 14 (296 left):

Unit movement and bombardment. Our economy is improving, so I bump research to 20%.

Turn 15 (295 left):

Hmm, sack the cats at Valencia to try to bring the odds more in my favor here. Valencia is history:

CaptureWiz093.jpg

Hmm I've found a new Izzy city east of the former Valencia that we need to take care of:

CaptureWiz094.jpg

Will move some units there.

Ugh, Salamanca is on a bloody hill. Gonna take a couple of turns to bombarb and take.

To next player:

We're on the way to a conquest win. We're investing multiple cities at the moment, most notably Zaragoza and Salamanca. I have units en-route to a number of rendezvous points. Make sure to stamp out Pamplona!

http://nryan.com/Civ4/Liq01/Turn05/Liq-01_AD-1660.Civ4SavedGame

Roger. Got it. I assume we're using a scorched earth strategy now (i.e. burn everything).

(0)1660AD: Preflight check. First thing I do is go to the finances screen and see where we are bleeding cash. Ok! Civics and maintence are both bad. So is unit upkeep, but we need units...

I flip us over to vassalage. The upkeep is 5 gold higher for the civic, but the extra experience is welcome, as well as the +16 free units (which should more than counterbalance the 5 gold extra).

I whip the courts in Corinth and Sparta. Still have enough pop to work the cottages, so I'm not mad.

Why are Dehli and Bombay making 1 move units? They're on the wrong side of our empire for doing that... I switch them to Keshiks. These will be our first Keshiks of the game! And they'll probably only be good for pillaging and harrasment.

(1)1662AD: Government back, we're bleeding... absolutely nothing less... Baffled, I look around. Oh... Damn lol. Beuarcracy was boosting our capital's gains. Damn. Oh well, at least we get more units with experience now.

I smash a catapult coming towards Delphi with a maceman. Our forces are spread really thinly...

Salamanca's defenses are down, and with two piddly longbowmen, we should be ok.

Suicide cat 1 goes in... and dies. Now we pay 2 less gold in upkeep lol.
I send in cover promoted Maceman for the first smackdown of a longbow.
Next... I send in an Elephant... he dies. Then a city attack maceman... and he dies. Finally, ANOTHER elephant for the win. Jeeze. One longbowmen caused so much trouble...

Salamanca burns for a nice 70 gold. I'm going to send the rest of the units towards the Jewish Holy city and burn that too.

(2)1664AD: Rexburg- Mace -> Mace.
KB- Pult -> Pult
Rockland- Missionary -> Missionary. It occurs to me that I should check if we have any cities left to convert.
Liquidia- Pult -> Pult
Eagle's Nest- Pult -> Pult
Sparta- Courthouse! -> Granary? I dunno. Not making a lot of hammers.
Corinth- Courthouse! -> Uh... I dunno, a lighthouse?

Elephant flawlessly desposes of Izzy Longbowmen that ran out into the tundra. Silly Izzy...

Zaragoza is dead next turn. All units have reached it, and it's defense is now gone.

IBT: Izzy's maceman dies attacking the Elephant that killed her Longbowman last turn. lol. Oh and the Barb Macemen moves forward.

(3)1666AD: Oohh. Creepy year number :p.

Ok. Suicide cats on Zaragoza! Suicide cat 1 withdraws! Good job! Although he didn't damage the unit he attacked, collateral is always good. Cat 2 also withdraws! Yay! Two less cats to rebuild.

Cat 3 dies, phooey... And he had the best odds too. Cat 4 also dies.

Bigman Gibs goes in and rips up the joint.
After that, the rest of my units have 100% chance to win :). So there goes Zaragoza.

Zaragoza.jpg

IBT: A nasty Spanish Pikeman comes in and kills the brave 2 time winner Elephant. May he rest in peace.

(4)1668AD: Izzy adopts Theo and Vassalage. Took you long enough Izzy... And you get free civics change!

IBT: Izzy kills one of our macemen with a Crossbowman. Then asks for peace! No way!

(5)1670AD: Defenses continue to fall on most of Izzy's cities. Unfortunately, we have a slight problem because our Jewish Holy City task force may have been cut off... We'll see though.

(6)1672AD: Ready to sack next turn. Unfortunately, Pampalompa's catapult just got there this turn. Grr..

(7)1674AD: I burn Santiago at the cost of 1 cat, 1 mace, and 1 elephant. Not too bad... but not too good.

Units at Barcelona are way overextended... I'll be lucky if they survive.

IBT: Brian Bloodaxe is killed by a Catapult! Damnit!

(8)1676AD: 2 Cats face off against Vitoria's defenders. 1 dies, the other withdraws. Two maces then handily wipe out the enemy. 1 is a Bigman to be :p.

Vitoria.jpg

Izzy's forces have a gap in them, so units at Barcelona are withdrawing to avoid further losses.

(9)1678AD: Forbidden Palace is being started in Bombay. Don't know of a better site for it right now.

I level Pampalompa. ARG!

barb-and-izzy.jpg

OMG! She made ANOTHER ONE! And there's a BARB CITY! OMG! I was hoping to reunite my forces, not split them even more... sigh...

Units are descending on Cordoba from all sides. With only 2 defenders, it is doomed.

(10)1680AD: We have a great merchant. I use him on Guilds. I then switch research over to finish guilds in 1 turn. Yay knights.

Cordoba pisses me off. And so does our unit Maintenence. Also, we are getting war weariness. So I rush Cordoba at the loss of a maceman and a keshik. Wooo.. More money for the war chest.

(11)1682AD: This war is making me sick! Can't stop the bleeding of cash because we have too many units, and they're all bumming around in enemy territory.

(12)1684AD: Mass of units moving west. Most are not stacked, because now I'm paranoid of Izzy's catapults.

(13)1686AD: Bombard Izzy's new city. It's going down next turn I hope.

Moving masses of units on Izzy's southern city. It's overkill but...

(14)1688AD: Nothing really. My units aren't in place yet. Stupid cats are so slow!

(15)1690AD: Burn Izzy's ridiculous new city to the ground. Let's hope it's the last of them.

Bombay in unhappy. Boo hoo. I whip the forbidden palace to teach them a lesson.

Turn Synopsis. Particularly bad warmongering from me this turnset, I apologize. Izzy threw units from all directions, and having to attack a huge border is not that great either. Fortunately, now we've shrunk the border. The units are concentrated now, so further resistance should be laughable (but watch out for Izzy catapults coming from Barcelona (Jewish Holy City)). Burning Barcelona should net us nice cash, as well as deny Izzy her shrine.

Here's the attack force for you. Should be more than adequete.
attack-force.jpg

IMO, we should run through the forests in the south and CHOP EVERYTHING! Ridiculos forests are slowing down movement A LOT, and we could use the chopping to supplement our builds.

We have guilds now (back on Liberalism in 17 turns), which is good because we can build knights, who will absolutely kick ass. Speaking of which, I have not yet seen even 1 mounted unit from Izzy, which probably means she lacks horses.

But the real boon from guilds is Grocers. Stack em with markets and that's 50% more gold in each city. We should do that ASAP in our commerce cities.

War weariness is sucking, so I started up cathedrals in some cities. If we don't care, feel free to cancel them, although angry people hurt our economy. Either way, the war shouldn't be much longer with concentrated forces, although I don't know if the land north of Barcelona is continous, which might mean we need boats, which will mean a new city on that coast!

Izzy is up 3 techs on us. Divine, Optics... and something else...

I think it would be safe to say that I had no idea what the heck was going on most of the time :p

Good call on vassalage, I didn't realize it gave you the extra free unit upkeep. Also on guilds, knights would be a nice finisher to this game.

I think bumping the culture slider is better instead of building cathedrals, which take forever. You just need cheap theatres to enable culture slider benefits in each city.

But anyways, we're on the home stretch here. Can Scowler finish it off? :)
