LK127, Monarch, Vikings, Hub Map

A quiet set indeed. Barbarian activity has virtually ceased and they're building cities instead.

Uppsala has built three chariots, another on its way.

Capital grew to 3 pop then started building a settler.
Haith city has a monument, now building workboat.

We've discovered monarchy and researching alphabet.

We've switched to hereditary rule.

HC has gone confucian.

Someone's built the Great Wall.

Thoughts:
Keep building cities and expanding.

I agree that the lakeville blue dot is just to powerfull of a food city. It is the next city target.

With the amount of land out there we can't get to currency and / or courts fast enough.

Very Quiet Turnset Highlights:

430 BC - Confucianism spreads to Uppsala, but I do not convert

340 BC - Birka (Lakesville) founded.

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

280 BC - Pyramids BIADL

265 BC - Huayna asks to trade Pigs for Wine, I don't see why not, so I agree; Hinduism spreads to Nidaros; Hatty adopts Representation (Pyramids)

Iron will be connected in three turns. Uppsala has pumped out several chariots and is now building a trading post while waiting for iron to be connected.

Here is a shot of Mycenian, the specialist farm city:

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

Save

Looking ok. Haven't opened the save but we should have five or six chariots by now which should be enough to capture Mycenean.

We're still firmly at the bottom of the scorecard so need to keep growing.

The barb city still stands, as the chariots do not get good odds against fortified archers. I was hoping one of the AI weaken the defenders a bit, but Hatty's archer was just contented to stay fortified there (apparently also waiting for us to weaken the defenders ... how stupid you think I am?).

However, the next player should be able to get that city:

Axe and sword are heading there.

Someone tell us we are hopeless in tech .. hmmm.

LK127-BC0235-Most-Adv.jpg

That will have to be changed.

Vicky then came asking us to cancel deals with Celtics ... after consulting with the foreign advisor, I agreed.

LK127-BC0220-Vicky-ask.jpg

We soon discover where Vicky was, and we happily proceed to make a map of England.

LK127-BC0175-england.jpg

in 160 BC, the Viking wiseman learnt alphabet ... and its time for the favorite part of diplomatic game ...

Huayna is the tech monster ... he knows everything we know (and more). Although he seems to be resourceless

Thus, I think it is save to trade Monarchy away:

Geez ... this fat lady already has currency. The gold allows me to push the research slider all the way to 100%.

Next trade with Hatty:

LK127-BC0160-hatty-trade.jpg

Workers, get your chopping axe ready.

Cyrus decided not to conduct a fair trade ... greedy bastard.

Here is the tech situation at end turn:

LK127-BC0025-tech-sit.jpg

The Great Library is available, but will take a whopping 75 turns. We could chop, but I think its not worth it. Instead I started a settler.

Had a look at the save and I saw that a barb city had popped up 1 tile east of Cyan dot (cashville), wasting 2 FP, so it'll need razing.

I think the settler should therefore head to Fish/Oasis/Sugar. Speaking of sugar, Hatty will trade Calendar for Alpha and Iron, but we need to wait til a border pop in Birka before making the trade (if it's still possible at that point).

After the Settler's out, we should assign a couple of Scientists in Nidaros for Academy/Philo grab.

25 BC
It looks so weird to see an Egyptian boat in the lake above Birka.

Lack of workers is our big problem with having 4 cities, yet just 2 workers.

10 BC
I trade Brennus monarchy and alphabet for calendar. We can immediately put the incense and sugar on-line to continue growing our cities.

50 AD
I kill an archer in the barb city, but the swordsman is pretty beat down.

65 AD
The axeman is useless, and dies to the barb town. We also lose a chariot, but we capture Mycenian.

95 AD
Bjorgvin is formed at the wine and sugar site. Our new worker is heading there to get the wines on-line.

=======================

Summary:
Nidaros will grow in one turn, and we can hire our first scientist at that point.
There isn't much going on at the moment, as we are in expansion mode still. My big concerns are military and courts to allow for a larger empire.

Got it. Will get those scientists assigned, train some swords and a settler and go take the other barb town, I think.

go take the other barb town, I think.
How about the word raze instead of take? That is the stupid AI placement that waste two flood plains.

CoL came in on turn 1 and I set us off to CS, which will complete in 6. The scientists in Nidaros are working on our GMan, but he's a good few turns off still.

Chehalis was sacked and yielded a handsome return of 117g at the cost of a chariot.

civ4screenshot0163pw0.jpg

On my final turn, Jelling was founded on cyan dot:

civ4screenshot0166iz7.jpg

Other than that, I cancelled the health trade with Capac for Dyes from Vicky. Later traded Jules Wines for Spices.

Brennus called up wanting me to cancel trade with Hatty and then to request OBs, but I declined: he's weak and he's Vicky's worst enemy, so I wouldn't advise making any deals with him. I doubt HC likes him much either: he reverted to Hinduism after building the KW.

We can trade out CoL for HBR and 250g with either Jules or Hatty. The latter has just learnt Drama, so we might hang on to CoL and get Drama from her in a few turns.

The obvious path after CS would be to Machinery but the Colossus hasn't been built yet, so we'd have to self-research even though HC and Vicky have Metalcasting.

Units - the scouting chariot can head up Capac's spoke or down that of Cyrus. The sword outside Mycenae is clearing fog; the workboat nearby can explore the north. The worker at Nidaros might head for Jelling; and the melee units in that area can head back inland.

Finally, we're still plum last in every important category.

Getting CS is a biggie for us, as that will add more shields to our military city once the irrigation can go south.

Finally, we're still plum last in every important category.
Believe me, I am painfully aware of this. We need our two food heavy cities to get up to speed so that we can build GT to whip out an army, and get more from our specialist farm.

Got it. Unlikely to play tonight, should be able to play tomorrow.

I was looking through trading options and a couple of things occured to me.

First is that vicky and jules have a stash of cash we can pick up in part trades (and may be able to use some of it to part buy currency).

Second is that trading away CoL gives philosophy to anyone who has a free GS available (ours is still several turns away) so its a bit of a gamble. Of course Hunny has CoL already so he could beat us to philosophy anyway.
