LK127, Monarch, Vikings, Hub Map

Because LK126 is heading towards a Cultural Victory as well as because of the points Lee mentioned above, I think it only makes sense to go towards Space.

Did I say Birka in my last post? Oops! I tend to get absent-minded most of the time.

I ment to ask this:

Why don't you put the Globe Theater in Mycenian?

Swiss Pauli: If you've only played 6 turns then I guess its up to you if you want to finish your set. I'm not in any particular rush.
No, you can take it: I was up in three SGs simultaneously, so I'd be happy for you to grab it. (Maybe play 14 to get us back to a round number of turns left.)

Got it. Looked at it a bit more. Nice to see marble city has been founded, leave starting NE until marble is hooked up. Done a bit of whipping. We also need more workers (7 workers for 10 cities is not ideal).

Tech wise may as well complete liberalism and revolt to free religion. Rather than astronomy I'm wondering about heading towards steel both for its military benefits (amphib grenadiers and frigates) and its trade potential.

I think we can give gold city a miss though we do need to hookup gold soon for happy and resource trade.

On the subject of resource trades HC will give us clams, pigs, 10gpt for iron. I'm thinking we should make the deal though I could understand if other people were reluctant.

In terms of politics we seem to have an HC/Brennus bloc, a Hatty/Vicky bloc with Jules and Cyrus less obviously aligned.

Errrm...are you sure you're not confusing stone with marble?

Astro gives us Observatories, which we need before Steel. And you can't have Frigates without Astro, and Amphibious Grenadiers don't add much defensive value, and we don't want to put them on Galleys...

One gold is being mined and connected.

Not unless we're in a Defensive Pact with him.

Jules and Hatty share Taoism (unless J went Free Rel). Brennus is isolated by his religion but HR is Capac's favourite civic, so he'll put up with the Celt being in a heathen religion.

I got confused between stone and marble.

Re tech path. I'm aware that we need astronomy for frigates and galleons. We also need universities before observatories so we can build Oxford. However I do think that our best option for technology is trading. Jules has astronomy already. Chances are AIs will follow standard research path which rarely involves chemistry/steel giving us the option of multiple tech trades a bit later on.

Jules won't trade Astro for ages and by rerouting off the optimal tech for Space (which involves getting the free GS from Physics) then you'll get worse results than going directly. The other point is, do you really want to trade out key military techs to the AI, when you can offer Scientific Method and Physics?

Oberservatories can be built after universities complete in the best towns (i.e Nidaros), whilst we wait for the lesser cities to finish their universities.

I'm so used to having Great Lib that I think I automatically delay Scimeth. In the circumstances physics beeline through astronomy seems like a good plan (with a few lightbulbs along the way hopefully).

In my experience, it's still better to get Sci Meth ASAP, even with the Great Library. One might delay by a turn or two to get that GS out, but going 'off path' generally yields inferior results.

One point to note about Great Scientists is to check whether an Academy will pay out more than settling; Jelling might be a contender for an Academy, but it will need to be calculated at the time.

Another quiet 14 turn set.

1802. Discover liberalism. Astronomy next (15 turns). Revolt to Free Religion.

1232. HC is a pain in the posterior:
lk127a0000.jpg

Seeing as we have no deals with HC and a couple with Vicky I decline.

1244. Vicky builds Hagia Sophia.

1262. Trade rice to Hatty for crabs (had enough silly comments in alc13)

1280. End of set.

GreyFox (on deck)

Remember 15 peace / 10 war turns per round. STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 hours to complete.

Win target: Space

Turnset Summary:

1292 AD - Astronomy in; Sci. Meth due in 13
Globe Theatre finishes in Birka!

1298 AD - I trade around to get Gunpowder, Economics and Nationalism

1334 AD - Hatty completes the Spiral Minaret

1364 AD - Scientific Method in. We have one source of oil: the desert tile 1W of Mycenian; Physics due in 19

Unless we do something about it, HC could potentially beat us to Space. He already has Chemistry and I saw riflemen roaming around. He doesn't have Astronomy yet though.

I'm happy to report that we are no longer last in score :)

I'm sad to report that my computer is running dreadfully slow and I won't be able to get any screenshots up.

Got it. Will continue whipping Birka,

As Devo said - whip it, whip good... :D

That city may be the difference in wininng this game. A constant troop flow will go a long way toward catching up in soldiers.

Executive Summary

Whipped a few cities (mainly Birka :mischief:), made 2 trades in tech, and revolted to Free Market.

Details

Birka is whipped mercilessly every 3 turns or so to maintain a city size between 12 ~ 13. I suggest converting the northern cottages to farms to encourage growth in Birka.

Someone suggested chain farm to GP-Farm, alas the game mechanics doesn't allow that:

lk127-AD1388-no-farm.jpg

I suspect it is the hill and peak that is blocking the irrigation.

Around 1400, I notices more civ showing replaceable parts, and decide it is time to trade.

lk127-AD1400-tech-sit.jpg

Cyrus wants 2 techs that everyone knows:

lk127-AD1400-cyrus-trade.jpg

And Brennus wants Astro + Liberalism ... hmm... against my better judgement, I agreed.

lk127-AD1400-brennus-trade.jpg

The remaining tech on maket is divine rights, which I don't see a point in getting.

Getting constitution prompts me to check the civics, and I am shocked to find us still in decentralism. Thus I revolted to EDIT:MercantilismFree Market. I think hard on Representation, and decided against it. We only has 3 specialists (2 scientists and an engineer in Mycenian). More importantly, we are gaining +5 bonus with the power leader HC from HR. Anyway, revolting to Mercan or Rep cost 1 turn, and revolting to both cost 2 turns. So nothing is lost.

Hatty is helping us road our mine -- I ain't complaining!

lk127-AD1424-hatty-worker.jpg

My last turn yield Physics (due to deficit research throughout my turns) and netted us the scientist. Uranium is in our BFC.

lk127-AD1460-physics-scientist.jpg

I clicked on Electricity just to get the dialog away. So next player can change it if you want. One possibility is chemistry, since the scientist is offering 2700+ beakers for that tech.

In regards to the irrigation path, the sugar first has to be irrigated. It currently has a plantation on it.

Blimey, three sets in twenty-four hours.

Farm that sugar. Is is worth looking for sites for an academy rather than lightbulbing part of chemistry?
