LK151 - WM, where are we?

LK's city names I recognized; I didn't watch Firefly when it aired but I saw it on DVD recently. Greebley's Cure Dream I had to Google, since I don't watch much anime.

750 (0): I'm glad to see aggressive improvement and merging at Brasilia. :goodjob:

Our settler pump (Rio) has fallen to size three, so I'll have it build a warrior while it regains size four, and our next settler will appear on the fifth turn of this round.

I change Cure Dream's walls build to a temple and pop-rush it. With American Richmond so close the town needs its temple right now.

730 (1): Our exploring galley meets the Songhai in extreme western Alaska. Evidently that was their starting position, since they're backward and broke with two cities, a useless contact.

Salvador spearman --> warrior.

710 (2): We found Herbert West on an unexciting location in Korea, but it's one of the last two low-corruption sites available to us and we have to use it.

We qualify to build the Forbidden Palace, at fourteen cities. If things go as we plan that'll be Brasilia's build after the Great Library.

Salvador warrior --> worker, Artie Nielsen spearman --> spearman, Helena G. Wells temple --> catapult.

690 (3): We found Megan Halsey in extreme southern Japan. I choose a site with nine land tiles and no river over one with six land tiles and a river, because this is a first-ring city and in the long term we want it to be more than a fishing village.

Our southern curragh, Down Under Plunder, confirms that Indonesia is the civ occupying real-world Australia.

Salvador worker --> spearman, Five Wheat Feat worker --> worker, Belo Horizonte barracks --> galley.

670 (4): River Tam worker --> temple.

650 (5): We buy a Chinese worker for 118 gold. The only tech we could send China is Literature, so that's out; but OTOH, our Great Library build is looking good, so I'm willing to spend a bit of the gold we've been hoarding for tech deals.

Salvador spearman --> warrior, Rio de Janeiro settler --> settler.

630 (6): We buy two more workers from China, for 236 gold. Our nest egg remains around 1000 gold, which is probably sufficient right now.

Salvador warrior --> worker, Artie Nielsen spearman --> spearman.

610 (7): Salvador worker --> swordsman pre-build, Five Wheat Feat worker --> worker, Cure Dream worker --> worker.

590 (8): Suddenly the pitiful Songhai have some cash, so we sell them HBR for 111 gold.

The Zulus also have mysterious wealth, and we sell them Writing for 147 gold.

We hook up Fortaleza's iron. We've built enough warriors and this is good timing.

Belo Horizonte galley --> galley.

570 (9): Our exploring galley meets the Germans in the Alaskan panhandle. They have fourteen cities, but are generally primitive and poor. Bismarck does have Polytheism, which we lack, but he wants too much for it when we expect to receive it from the GLib in a few turns.

Rio settler --> settler, Claudia Donovan barracks --> horseman, Helena G. Wells catapult --> catapult.

550 (10): Not much; our first swordsman will complete on the interturn.

With three turns to go our chances of building the Great Library are excellent, though a last-minute disaster due to a cascade or an unknown civ is always possible. Once we have the GLib we'll want to reduce the luxury rate, presently at 50% to keep Brasilia happy. It's likely that once we're free to trade Literature and other techs for luxuries, that alone will solve the problem, especially given that Brasilia will be able to build a marketplace quickly once the GLib brings in Currency. But if those measures don't suffice, running down Brasilia's population a bit by building workers or a settler would be fine.

Apart from the possibility of a marketplace first, Brasilia should build the Forbidden Palace after the GLib.

Our settler in central Japan can found a city where it stands next turn.

Our settler presently near Salvador can claim some territory on the mainland by founding at 1 on the screenshot, or nearby if fogbusting reveals something better. We're set up for the settler and its escort to cover most of the distance in a three-ship chain to Jayne Cobb, which will be much quicker than the land route.

As longer-term goals we should aim to found three more cities in Japan and three in the Philippines, though these would principally be land grabs as almost all would be badly corrupt. We don't really want to found a city on Taiwan, since it would push better places down in corruption rank, but an AI foundation there would be troublesome; possibly we should just block the whole island with units.

We'll want a home-waters fleet of at least five galleys for all this; at the moment we have three, with a fourth soon to complete in Belo Horizonte.

Down Under Plunder is beginning to circle Australia clockwise.

The warrior in our North American galley has disembarked, and can start trying to make its way east in search of contacts.

Five Wheat Feat and Cure Dream aren't fully developed as stable worker pumps, but as long as we check them every turn and keep them at +7 food (except when less is needed for growth), and maximize shields within that parameter, they'll produce efficiently.

Salvador is still producing a worker every time it hits size seven.

Five Wheat Feat might be a good central location for our catapult force, currently at one. They shouldn't be put in Cure Dream since it might flip.

We're still moving a homeless scientist around. Once we have the GLib we can fire him.

Crossing the waters:

We 'discovered' Firefly shortly before Christmas last year; we both got the DVD for each other for Christmas gifts. What prompted my interest was a review of the game of Firefly in late October and not really wanting to watch more of Law and Order Season I on Netflix.

A sci-fi show without aliens. And it worked. :goodjob:
Spoiler :

Cure Dream was a Google search for me too.

730 (1): Our exploring galley meets the Songhai in extreme eastern Alaska. Evidently that was their starting position, since they're backward and broke with two cities, a useless contact.
I was wondering when we would find one. During my testing I had a false start in Alaska. We may have a civ in Greenland.

I purposely picked a really obscure character/show with a funny name/title.

America is really in our face. If we can upgrade enough warriors, I would like to have a war with America before pikes appear. It can be a limited war with the purpose of grabbing the cities near us or an all out war if it goes well. What do you think? I am voting to switch to war mode rather than settlers for our next expansion phase. American lands will be better than what we can find.

What do you all think?

Got it.

Working on strategy post.

Factoids:
Currently we have zero Swords. Two are in training (Salvador and Artie Nielsen).
We have 20 Warriors; 12 Regular and 8 Veteran.
Upgrade cost for Warrior to Sword in 60 gold.

Polytheism is known by 3 Civs.
No one knows Monarchy; all the governments are in Despotism.
Monarchy could become known rather soon.
Not sure how getting Monarchy changes the equation on war with America.

If we can upgrade enough warriors, I would like to have a war with America before pikes appear.

I don't think this window of opportunity in which we could attack American spearmen with swords is really going to exist, at deity. Experience suggests that the haul of techs from the Great Library will catapult us right into the Middle Ages, and we'll probably find America already there, as the apparent tech leader right now. So Abe is likely to have pikemen before we could build up anything like an adequate attack force.

More generally, it's irritating that America is depriving us of two good sites, but even so we've built a core that I'd consider sufficient for victory. I don't think the situation justifies the risk of attacking a much more powerful civ without the force multipliers on which we usually rely, armies and bombardment units.

My assumption has been that our first military adventure will be an easy war against Venezuela, important particularly for gaining us armies and Heroic Epic.

BTW, CB, if the GLib brings us Monarchy I don't see any reason not to revolt immediately. It should be a painless process, since we're religious.

If we upgrade the Vet Warriors and put them on the border we could trade away lit when for America cash when we get the GLib (or turn before). If they have a lot of gpt then hold off and take their cash. If they don't the trick of upgrading Warriors totally outdoes the AI. Without a lot of gpt and no cash we can have a 1 vs 1 war which we will win the towns near us.

edit: we will know if they have Feudalism on the turn the Glib completes. Worth setting up even if we don't utilize it.

Remember we are getting the Glib earlier than usual. Even if they do have Pikes, we can still grab those key towns and use pikes to defend us for the turns. They will still be stomped. The only risk is if they have decent gpt in which case we trade for it instead.

We still have a decent amount of natural land grab, even if just okay, to work on.
I would have to see the situation post GL turn to give a better answer. I suspect America is the #1 Civ, and we could only pull it off if we had enough tech to pull at least one or two allies to our side to spread them thin.

Can we get enough settlers built to replace the main targets? I have no good sense if we are culturally strong enough to hold foreign cities at this point.
For me, that annoying city jammed into our borders, near our GL city, is the number one that needs to die.
I can't load the game from work, but IIRC there isn't any new resources close to the border to gain. Picking up another luxury would make the war more appealing.
As far as I know America hasn't been in a war, so they haven't depleted there initial troops.

Notes
Great Library due in 3 turns in Brasilia.
Settler on line in Rio de Janeiro, due in 5.
One has just left Rio, 1N of the city. Its home is 1S-1Se of Australia's Iron Colony. It looks like a 12 turn hike to get there.
City ready to be built in Japan next turn.

Plans

Worker Tasks
Need road from Rio due north to HG Wells; one tile will road this IBT, leaves two more, forest and plains.
Need road from Fortaleza due north to Claudia Donovan; two tiles to road, forest and grass.
Need to road the mined hill NW of Brasilla.
Need a second road, through that mined hill, to Five Wheat Feat. Brasilia is too important to have only one road into it.
Need a road from Rio south to Artie Neilsen. Three tiles, two of them forest.
A road from HG Wells to Cure Dream, two desert tiles, would be nice.

The Great Library will put us into the Middle Ages. Start on Feudalism or Engineering?

Do we gift Russia and Germany into the Middle Ages and trade for their new tech?

Average relative to the Songhai with their two-city tundra empire--that's almost insulting.

Please bear in mind that this settler is intended to move to the coast and then ship-chain to Jayne Cobb, saving some time on the journey.

Start on Feudalism or Engineering?

Do we gift Russia and Germany into the Middle Ages and trade for their new tech?

Feudalism and Engineering will inevitably come to us from the Great Library, so we don't need a forty-turn run on either of them. The cautious play is to re-start a run when Invention is available as a choice.

The gifting manouevre is clever when we don't have the GLib but needless when we do; it would just push the global tech pace to gain us techs we'll soon have for free anyway.

Well, a brief moment of danger when the Americans had Literature and the ToA as a pre-build, but it worked out. :goodjob:

Three things we should do immediately, whatever we decide about an attack on America:

1. Trade Monarchy and Currency to Babylon for Republic, then sell Republic to the Americans and the Sioux for all their gold, gpt, and luxuries. This will bring in 1605 gold, two luxuries, and whatever gpt America and Siouxland may have.

2. Sell Literature around for whatever gold and luxuries it will fetch, as long as the offer is at least 50 gold. Literature is a cheap tech that loses its value quickly, so it's pointless to wait.

3. Revolt to monarchy.

As far as the possible American war is concerned, we've found them in the Middle Ages but without Feudalism yet--about what we expected. I think we'd need at least fifteen swordsmen for even a quick, speculative war against America--ten for the strike force and five to provide some sort of city defense. Even with seven veteran warriors available for upgrade, and even assuming we set Salvador immediately for two-turn swordsmen (cancelling its present worker) and Brasilia for barracks --> swordsmen, I don't think we can have that force available and deployed in less than seven or eight turns. By then, the Americans may well have Feudalism or be within a turn or two, bearing in mind how much the AI likes that tech (a government, a Wonder, and two units). So to me, the timing of an American war is just too fine, and the risk that we might be crushed by superior numbers before we can take enough cities to make Abe negotiate too great.

I respect the classic warrior-upgrade strategy, but at deity I think it's something we have to start planning from the beginning of the game, not eighty turns in.

We have 20 Warriors. The units we keep back could be regular so we do have enough for a war if we upgrade them all.

I would check to see how much gpt America has. If its sufficient to be worth trading for stay with peace. Otherwise I would attack them as soon as we get units on the front. The farther away warriors can be our defense after they ugprade.

If war does look reasonable would take the cities that are too close to us first. They will be smallish so we can starve to size 1.

One other thing, if we don't go to war with America, lets consider another war with a smaller civ so we can start working on Armies and such for the real opponents. Someone without iron and no gpt.

Heading to bed, so can't look right now.

I'm not sure what you are looking for comments about.

The only obvious thing to me is suck as much money as we can for trading. Maybe we can even get lucky and grab a few workers for tech.

As for war other then America, I think Venezuela is the only other option. I don't know if I was to deal with 2 move spears, and a Zulu GA. At the moment we don't have a lot of viable targets for neighbors.

Your current position and size of army against possible American invasion is terrible and America is already a juggernaut. You have no defence whatsover. Remember your last losing game with Indonesia and attack from mr chinaman!

Where is an american warrior currently and why do you think why it is exactly there right now? Spying for invasion, maybe?
