LK163 - AWM, India

Continuing from 540 BC: Victory Screen: 0% world area 7% world population

500 BC: Troops advance on Melbourne.

475 BC:
Taking of Melbourne:
eArchers kill 2 Aussie Spearmen. Archer killed by Archer. eEnslaver kills Archer and gets a Great Leader.
Melbourne is ours and we get 58 gold which will allow us to continue deficit research after we learn Polythesim.
Xkt1KP.jpg

450 BC:
We learn the secrets of Polytheism. Since we have a Great Leader, we begin researching Writing so the Leader can build an Academy.

IBT: Greece builds The Oracle.

425 BC: to 350 BC: Build infrastructure. Running deficit research.

IBT: Maghreb’s build Temple of Artemis.
Nubia builds Black Pyramids.

300 BC and 275 BC: Build infrastructure. Decrease research percentage with no change in turns to complete Writing.

Great Leader is in Madras waiting to build an Academy.

I postponed building Slavery in newer cities to give them a chance to get a border expansion.

I was going to irrigate the wheat and mine a few hills at Bombay.

Research is setup to learn Iron Working next then beeline to Monarchy.

In the queue for tomorrow.

In looking at the map wondering just how far away Turkey and the Vikings are.

275 BC (0)
Something is goofy in Buffalo Trace. I can’t switch to walls.
(IT) I’m not opening up embassies you silly advisor.

250 BC (1)
Now I could get Buffalo Trace on walls.

I switch Bombay from clown to scientist. Every little bit helps.
(IT) I see a mystery scout near Sydney. It went right back into the dark.

225 BC (2)

200 BC (3)
I find the mystery scout. It turns out to be Turkish. Our enslaver just captures it.

175 BC (4)

150 BC (5)

125 BC (6)
Our leader is finally used to rush an academy in Madras.

100 BC (7)
I appreciate getting a supply shipment. Anything that gets us cash to speed up research is worth it.
I can’t spot any iron. :(

75 BC (8)
Some military action may finally be arriving. I just spotted 2 Turkish ships east of Bombay.
(IT) Italy completes The Limes.

50 BC (9)
I finally spot orange borders. I think I have found Turkey.

25 BC (10)
The borders are Turkey. I spot a decent 7 unit stack inside the borders.
(IT) Turkey lands 2 enslavers near Bombay.
Persia completes Hammurabi’s Code.

1 AD (11)
We lost an enslaver killing the 2 enslavers. (2-1)

25 AD (12)
We finally spot iron. It is an ugly spot near a volcano.
Our scout will be Turkish again. It found a Turkish warrior.

The archer is on our next city site. I originally didn’t like this spot. We have run out of premium sites, and need to start taking the second tier spots. There is a worker stack below the enslaver slowly building roads and irrigation this way.

A stack of attacking units is starting to build by Buffalo Trace. It needs to be a lot larger before heading toward Turkey. I’ve been getting roads built toward Turkey. You can see the iron at the top of the picture.

There is still a decent site by the capitol to back fill.

Summary:

I went a bit over 10. It is so quiet, and made for an easier handoff.

I think we are the only Hindu civ. Bombay is building World religion Hinduism.

There are a lot of volcanos along the Turkish border. Especially interesting could be the pollution pointed by the arrow. May be it comes from another volcano near the iron spot.

I too almost went a few extra turns. I handed off to let you decide if we do Iron Working or beeline to Monarchy. :) A little disappointing to see Iron is so far off. Continuing the road northwest through the Camel and Alligator brings us to the hill and a spot for a city to access the Iron.

Yes, India is the only Hindu civ.

OK, I got it. I'll get started tomorrow. Anything to keep in mind?

Rough goals:
* Research towards Monarchy. Revolt to City State along the way? I'm leaning towards no -- we get better worker productivity, but the lost production in our cities doesn't seem worth it for a short run in a government.
* Prosecute the war. Beware, Turks! :hammer:
* Build Academies and other buildings where appropriate.
* First build in captured towns will be Walls.
* Don't explore; we don't want to get more contacts too soon.

City state isn't that great. I agree to skip it.

I'm not sure how much actual fighting you will see vs Turkey. You will need to start shuttling offensive troops to join the road crew stack.

Revolting to City State is not efficient, we learn Monarchy right after City State. No need to revolt twice. City State does not eliminate the tile penalty.

Once we get Iron. building Forges before Slavery delays the -1 culture hit.

Any news? It is still pretty early turns.

I noticed a couple of other differences between Despotism and City State: Better unit support and paid labor.
Once we build the next city, it'll be 33 vs. 23 allowed units, 10gpt vs. a cost of ~200 gold (two turns' income). We're unlikely to need 20+ turns to research Monarchy, so it doesn't help.

I'm curious about the impact of beelining for City-State in the next game, then picking up The Wheel and Iron before going for Monarchy. That seems promising.

Back to India:

Pre-turn: Look around.
Delhi is at 13spt, building a 20-turn Hindu Spear. MM for growth: 3f/10spt
Hmm, Bombay needs more Mines to speed up Worldreligion Hinduism. I'm glad to see a Worker stack there.
IBT: Turks capture Scout; Cuzco completes Temple of Kukulcan;

50AD: Zzz
75AD: We spot Istanbul (pic)

9ZXpasu.png

100AD (T105): Settler reaches city site.
125AD: Enslaver kills Turkish Warrior. 1-0
Lissan founded (pic)

OxAtD85.png

150AD: Zzz...
175AD: We meet Austria-Hungary; their scout came out of the fog near Istanbul.
Switch Sydney to Admin Center. That way it starts building units next turn, not at the end of my turnset.
Canberra > Slavery, same reasons.
Vikings land Archer near Bombay.
Babylon completes Hanging Gardens.
200 AD: eEnslaver dies to Archer :wallbash: 1-1
Ratha finishes the job. 2-1
Science to 40%
City-State > Monarchy. Don't revolt.
225AD (T110): Monarchy due in 10 turns @ 60%, -9gpt.
I spot a sneaky Turk Warrior in the hills near our sheep-track.
The road reaches the Iron. We spot the Austria-Hungarian Scout again.
Our Indian Warrior sees a lot of Turk Spearmen (pic)

VsNz2Ms.png

IBT - screen freezes :(
250AD: Enslaver kills Turk Warrior, producing Shivaji! 3-1
Workers hook up the Road to Istanbul.

IBT - white screen again :(
When the dust settles, we've lost our vSpear in the Turkish Mountains. The stack as a whole is still there. :whew: 3-2
275AD: Retreat the roading stack! They make it back to the attack stack coming up the road.

IBT - Spear survives 3 Turkish Enslavers but dies to the fourth. 5-3 (I think, based on audio)
Our Enslaver kills one attacking Archer and retreats from the second. 6-3
300AD: We meet Germany, too :( They have a scout wandering around near the Iron.

IBT - Chariot suicides on our Spear. A second one retreats. 7-3
325 AD: Enslaver kills AH Scout
Golden Archer dies. 7-4
Ratha runs over Spear 8-4
GA snipes rSpear 9-4
Enslaver dies to Archer :wallbash: 9-5
Enslaver kills redlined Spear 10-5

IBT - Enemy Archers snipe our Enslaver and two GAs  10-8
Oi, we didn't have NEAR enough Archers for this :(
350 AD:
I retreat our stack -- Turkey has a TON of Spears marching out, and we only have 3 Archers near the front line

Another thought on city sites: 3S of Sydney. It overlaps 2 tiles with Sydney and 1 with Sqealing Pigs, but it's a riverside site that gets 7 BGs and a mountain.
