This is a highly informal strategy and roleplaying experience in the style of Imago's NESes, Gone is the Old Guard, Storm Tapestry and Born Yesterday. As your moderator, it's my goal not to [CENSORED] up.

The Map

The Rules
In this NES, you will be responsible for the governing of a nation-state in what we'll say is 1910. You'll use the (relatively) bare-bones stats, stories and player interaction to determine who survives and who is ground to bits between the Wheels of History(tm). I will determine who gets to play which blob based on an explanation for your nation's history, bearing in mind that we will start in the year 1910. I reserve the right to decide which application is best for wholly arbitrary reasons. Preferential treatment will almost certainly be reserved for applications that work with the precedent established by the applications of potential neighbors, and help me maintain a cohesive narrative for the whole thing. Once I decide who gets to be what, I'll post an update revealing national stats and setting the stage for the momentous events of the 20th century.

Anyway, here's sample stats

The United States of America/Lord of Elves
Government: Presidential Republic (Washington D.C.) - Barack Obama
Tech Level: Early Information Age
EP: 25
Army: 30 Land Divisions
Navy: 40 Ship Groups
Air Force: 45 Fighter Groups, 20 Bomber Groups
NUKULAR WEAPONS - <Y>/n

Government is a simple statement about the vital statistics of your nation's government. Your tech level is similarly a simple statement about how sophisticated your society is. Technological advancement will be handled on a moderator fiat basis, but if you provide a plausible story in your orders for why you should achieve a certain advancement, you have a good chance at getting it.

EP means Economic Power, and spending 3EP will produce 1EP's worth of income growth, guaranteed. You can also spend more and get more, or spend less and write really good orders and still get +1EP, but this is the base rate.

Let's talk about killing people, like always
These are the military unit prices. I'll update them as necessary, and you'll like it.

Modern Land Division - 1EP for 5
Modern Ship Group - 2EP for 1
Modern Air Group - 3EP for 1

Pre-Modern Land Division - 1EP for 10
Pre-Modern Ship Group - 2EP for 2

I'm going to reserve a separate post for national backgrounds that will provide relevant information on what your country's about. This NES will require you to write orders, telling me what you're going to spend your EP on and how you plan to respond to the various problems your country has that can be both internal and external. It will reward the players who are best at doing this convincingly and in a way that makes sense. I will also take into account stories, RP, etc.

Let's do it

Lord of Elves ohmygod this is beautiful I think I'm going to cry ;_;

The only thing I can complain about is that I think this would be better if this was modern times not 1910s. I always loved the disconnect between GITOG present compared to our own; it was definitely part of the charm.

EDIT: I made some changes.

JAPAN

In this timeline, Korea was annexed by Japan by the successful Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592–98.

In the 17th century the Qing dynasty sought to gain territory in Korea and attacked Japanese forces there, beginning what would become a 40-year war that would eventually see the resurgence of the Ming in the south and the division of China. Ultimately Japan was able to take advantage of that division to defeat the Qing and annex the entirely of the Manchu region to their empire.

Between the 17th and 19th centuries much of Korea and Manchuria was colonized by Yamato Japanese with indigenous populations limited commercially, politically, and socially. While the Yamato population soared the native Korean and Manchu suffered or were forced outwards until today all Japanese territories are majority Yamato.

In the 1820s, Japan was visited by the formidable Europeans who’s guns forced open Japanese markets. This ultimately led to the end of the daimyos, the rise of imperial rule, accelerated westernization and industrialization in a pattern similar to our own timeline.

Today Japan is the pre-eminent industrial nation in Asia and perhaps the world leader outside of Europe, combining a strong industrial base within the islands with cheap resources and labor from Manchuria.

Race is very important within the Japanese empire and Koreas, Manchurians, and mixed blood Yamato are treated as second-class citizens and often find it difficult to own land, find education, or operate commercially.

Japan is ruled by an imperial monarchy backed by a very powerful military. While the state owns a number of industries, real economic power lies in the family-owned Zaibatsu financial and industrial conglomerates.

Interested. In what I don't know, but I'm certainly intrigued :p

The Angevin Empire of England and France

Monarch: Emperor Henry XXIII, age 56
Heir: Prince Charles of Anjou, will become Charles VIII, age 31
Dynasty: de Anjou
Succession law: Male preference Primogeniture

Languages spoken: "Angevin". Following the victory of England in the Fifty Years War, the English nobles still were more likely to speak French than English. The adding of France fully into their domains caused what we would consider "Middle English" to mingle with the French language. The modern result sounds slightly similar to what we would consider French, but also has many words with Germanic origins and would not be considered in the same language family as the traditional Romantic languages.

Currency: Crowns

Government: Constitutional Monarchy (in the Prussian sense), the Emperor retains full executive authority, and has the ability to propose laws to his Parliament. Parliament is ran by the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Emperor. The House of Barons as its called will vote for or against laws the Emperor proposes, and can propose their own laws, which the Emperor can veto. Generally in times of greater stability or in war, the Emperor can afford to sidestep Parliament, but when support of the aristocracy is needed, the Emperor turns to Parliament for political cover. The House of Barons is elected only from those of Baron rank.

Society: Very plutocratic as it has steadily moved away from its more aristocratic roots. Following the Laws of Titles, no man may hold a rank above "Baron", which has allowed those of non aristocratic birth to buy their way into the nobility. As Henry XXIII has aged, he has seen the need for increased regulations on industry and has eliminated the monopolies and trusts that had previously dominated the economy. The stocks are seen as the purest test of a man's capability to raise his wealth, and on the London Stock Market fortunes are won and lost overnight. The stocks are credited with helping a more merit based society to take root, and the hyper competitive society has increased calls for the elimination of titles for those who fall below a certain threshold of wealth.

As of 1908, Women now can purchase Baron titles independently of their husbands, and are known as Baronesses. This is due to the "Society of the White Rose", a club of incredibly skilled investors who happen to all be women, and their generous election donations to some key members of Parliament and the interference of the Princess of Anjou and future Empress Consort.

Skin color is actually of little importance. Those of the non white races are actually treated with encouragement to do the best that they can to become "Angevin". This is not to say they are not exploited: they are, and ruthlessly so. However, they are not exploited because they are not white, they are exploited because they are not rich. For example, while many Indians came to England to work as maids and servants, some very successful Indians now have Angevin servants of their own.

Having a servant is actually very common, in fact servants can often have servants of their own. It should be noted that though some commoners are very poor, many are actually within the middle class and are unable to climb into the aristocracy. Having a servant is a way to help compete in the viciously stratified society, showing that you are a person of means.

Culture: Very competitive and very quickly moving (watches sell very well!). Kent, London, and Paris are true international cities, particularly with Indian immigration. Local regional identities somewhat subsist, but there is a larger Angevin identity that has been constructed that a majority, particularly in England and France, have embraced. The Gascon language does have some protections, but the use has whittled away due to the need to be able to speak Angevin and compete in the London Stock Market.

High power distance relationship. Very individual oriented.

Former Colonies: Parts of Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Parts of Canada. Lost because ???

I will wish to express my interest in this game. The Greater Colombian Federation and the Greek Empire may especially appear as interest.

Expressing interest in Mexico, clearly the first independent colony of this world and an example of democracy to the world. Or not.

1. Republic of Texas (is it a oligarchy? Republic? wait and see)
2. Alyeska (Hail the Czar)
3. Pakistan (between two giants)
4. Russia (see Pakistan)

I should clarify that to be considered for a nation you need to tell me more about what is going on there than just giving me a polity name. Also, I'm operating in favor of what's interesting rather than what's plausible. Don't go to Alien Space Bats levels of implausibility, but strictly speaking there doesn't really need to be a historical precedent for what you propose so long as it makes sense in the context of other people's backgrounds and would be cool.

The goal here is to provide an interesting backdrop for you all to savage each other.

I'm interested in joining, thinking between blurple, frangelterra and the big pink blob.

The Holy Roman Empire. The Catholic Republic of the Sacred Slavic Empire and Domains. The Sacred Republic. The Crusader State. The Third Rome. All valid names for the constitutional monarchy centered in Krakow, a dominant power of Eastern Europe.

History:

Their story begins with the expansion of Christianity. As various kings sought to unify Christiandom and spread the word of Christ, the title of the “Holy Roman Emperor” was given or assumed several times. As Christianity slowly moved eastward and as pagans were converted by the word or by the sword, so too did the title. After many centuries, it finally fell into the hands of the Kings of Poland, who were fighting heathens and pagans on all fronts, and who later served on the front line against [the purple blob].

This Holy Roman Empire is centered on Poland and it’s pagan frontier, but over the centuries also fell across common allies and realms married into the various Polish Dynasties. First with Lithuania, then with Hungary, the union of these realms under the Holy Roman Empire at the frontier of Christendom at once made them a great power and a great target. However, they truly proved the value of their title in the Reformation and the wars against Heresy and the renewed Heathen assault. By the early modern era, their power is and their title is undeniable.

Like many other countries, various liberties and concessions were made over time by the crown to various groups (mostly nobles). However, the existential threat of their dangerous frontiers kept most internal issues comparably calm compared to OTL. The prestige and the power of the crown allowed it to retain more power than OTL, while various “loosenings” of the Faith and the royal prerogatives allowed a series of Enlightened Despots in the early modern era to maintain the delicate balance of the Empire.

By the late 1700s/early 1800s, however, the system was noticeably in trouble. Their First Constitution merely codified structures already utilized by necessity. Their Second Constitution was more radical, occurring right after a series of revolts/revolutions, and lasted the shortest amount of time. It seems that the third time was the charm, because their Third and Current Constitution successfully established a centralized government with checks and balances, with a constitutional monarchy and a powerful legislature, and allowed for Industrialization to pick up as the Sacred Republic enters the 20th century.

Government/Outlook:

The Sacred Republic is a constitutional monarchy. I’m unsure how many branches exactly, but at least three: Executive/Royal, Legislative/Sejm, and the Judicial/Theocratic. Christianity is a founding principle of the government, as are various quite “liberal” concepts. You can think of Britain’s constitutional monarchy, mixed with a crusader state seige/war mentality.

Work in Progress.

Sorry Joan, expressing interest in the Yellow Blob in North America, or the Peope's Republic of Aztlan, which I shall try to describe below

Note that underlined infomation is me spitballing, and can change depending on other backgrounds

The history of the Mexica people, known to outsiders mostly as Aztecs (Think Persia vs Iran OTL), is one filled with hardship and war. The Aztec Triple Alliance, better known as the Aztec Empire, was the traditional polity that ruled the Mexica people. When the Spanish Conquistado Herman Cortes wanted to claim the Aztec riches for himself, he attempted to land a group of adventurers to overthrow the Empire. However, after a botched attempt to massacare the citizens in Cholula, the mobilized Aztec army surronded Cortes's forces and slaughtered them to a man. The embarrassment of the swift defeat of Cortes dashed further conquistadors' attempts to overthrow the Empire, especially after French gun runners started arming the Aztecs in return for preferential trading rights in the empire. The Spanish were forced to concede to never get Mexica.

The Aztecs were definitely an oddity in colonial era politics. Never too powerful to prevent colonial empires from settling around it, but far too strong and organized for the Europeans to tackle themselves, the Aztecs served as "neutral" land splitting French Lousiania (ITL expanded to cover the Texan bay as well) and Spanish Central America. The Aztecs themselves attempted to resettle their traditional homeland in the American Southwest, to limited success at that point. Lack of widescale French settlement meant the Aztecs served as France's primary source of soldiers to defend their colonial empire; a co dependence which ensured the Aztec's survival as other native nations saw themselves subjected by the Europeans.

The Napoleonic Wars heralded the end of the first wave of colonialism, and it shooked up the Aztecs as much as the rest of the New World. Napoleon sold Texas to the Aztec Empire, as he needed cash and the colony representing more of a liability than an asset. More importantly, the fledgling Spanish colonies declaring independence was seen as a major opportunity to expand by the Aztecs. The Aztecs quickly conquered the Spanish colonies as the mother nation was being invaded; there was nothing Spain or the colonials could really do to prevent it. Perhaps over fears of over extension, the Aztecs left South America alone, preferring to keep it at OTL Panama.

The end of the Napoleonic Wars and its conquests brought the Aztec Empire the greatest foe it ever met: Amerika (The green blob). The first major contact the Aztecs had with Amerika was over Louisiana; the latter invaded and seized the Mississippi River Valley shortly before the start of the Napoleonic Wars; the inability of the former French government from holding it was directly responsible for the selling of Texas. Amerikan settlers flooded Texas, as they considered the entire former French colony part of their land. Skirmishes between Aztec officials and Amerikan settlers, the latter armed and funded by Amerika proper, led to the latter leading a revolt in the late 1830s. The Aztecs were unable to hold control of the region, and the treaty of Tlaxcala in 1842 forced the Aztecs to recognize the Republic of Texas. Despite internal calls to, Amerika never attempted to annex Texas; fearing that they would lose a more conventional war against the Aztecs. Instead, Tlaxcala also established permanent boundries between the Aztec colony of Cochimi (California) and the Amerikan Oregon colony, along with other boundaries of the two nations. These borders serve as the modern borders of the nation to this day.

However, this would not be the last conflict between Amerika and the Aztec Empire. In 1864, the newly ascended Emperor Tlaltecatzin II attempted another invasion of Texas, to re annex the nation back as part of the Aztec Empire. The sudden invasion brought Amerika to the defence of its cultural kin, bringing the continient of North America to a brutal conflict. Once again, the Aztecs were able to successfully take control of Texas and Oregon, but were never able to operate past the Rockies or the Mississippi.

This uncomfortable situation lasted for Seven Years, leading the Aztec economy in ruins. Embargoed by the rest of the world for their so-called barbaric faith and cultual practices (The Mexica still hung on to their traditional Nahuatl faith rather than converting to Christianity) and imperial ambition, the Aztec Empire couldn't mantain the occupation of the Amerikan wst coast. Upheval over the war spiraled a republicanist coup in 1871 which spiraled the once mighty Aztec Empire into a decade long civil war.

Cochimi and the former Spanish colonies to the south attempted to assert independence, while reactionary froces fought liberals attempting to create a Mexica republic. Eventually, communist forces would previal in the heardlands of Mexica, establishing the People's Republic of Aztlan (referring to the mythical homeland of the Mexica; the new republic would be a worker's paradise on Earth).

Slowly but surely, the People's Republic of Aztlan would rebuild, retaking its lost territories in Cochima and in Central America. The former Empire was reunited, and now the communists hungirly look at Texas a third time, eager to export the revolution to North America and beyond....
