Is there a game guide for a Mac player? I just loaded CivIV on my MacBook and I am lost. Anybody recommend I buy the BradyGames office Strategy Guide? Does it apply to Macs too?
The first thing to say is that, for the standard Civ4 game at least, there's no significant difference between the Mac and Windows versions, other than the use of some different keyboard shortcuts because the keyboards are different. So you don't need to look for Mac-specific resources to help you play.
Re. game guides, I have no idea what you can buy for Civ4. But there's a strategy forum here, and I suspect any advice that you could pay for is probably available in there for free. You can also find a lot of discussion about game strategy in Succession Game threads, the Game of the Month pre-and post-game threads, and places like the Democracy Game and Hall of Fame forums - all features of this CFC forum.
Thanks Alan!
Well at this point I have the DVD with the manual on it. But I am embarrassed to admit that I do not even know how to pause the game to refer to it. I need to print it off but it is HUGE! So I quit the game and then it takes forever to restart. Yes, I am a complete newbie. I want something I can read while I have the game running... (and learn how to pause the game) I'll spend some time reading in the forums.
You don't need to pause the game since it is turn based. Nothing happens until you tell it to. You can hit Command-Tab to go to other programs, though that can cause graphic problems with certain cards. You can also run the game in a window, either go to the options menu in the game or hold the Command down just after you start it to get an options menu.
In the main menu, click on Options. Under that, you should see a radio button for 'always wait at end of turn'. With that engaged, you'll have to press enter (or click on the flashing red button) to let the game proceed. In effect, the game automatically pauses at the end of each turn.
You can access the Civilopedia at almost any time during the game. It's in the upper right corner of the screen. That's got way more info in it than is in the manual. Just spend some time each day going through entries there. Much of it won't make sense until you play around in the game, though.
Sulla did an outstanding WalkThrough a couple years ago. It's a long read, but it's a much more efficient way to get acquainted with the game. I'd suggest reading it in your off-computer hours
