Looks like Civ 6 is done: Kevin called April "final game update"

This seems like an awfully large leap of logic supported by nothing other than wishful thinking.

Much of the civ franchise's longevity is directly attributable to the modding community creating sustained interest over long periods of time where either a) there is no new civ game out, or b) the current civ game is still underdeveloped and won't have built out features for another few years. It would be quite dumb for Firaxis not to release the DLL at some point.

The fact that they haven't yet still seems pretty clear evidence that the option of "continuing to develop" VI after NFP was still very much on the table through NFP's development cycle.

edit: Obviously I'm typing too slow :D
That doesn't mean no, though. It might still happen.
Now we just need to implement this idea into a physical application and are on the edge to a perpetuum mobile ...
If it definitely wasn't going to happen, they'd probably have told us as much.
WHY?

What if the deciders want us in continuous limbo? What if they think, it suits them best, if they know what we know [and think], but we know nothing [of theirs].

As he said, the dll's were released early in their development cycles. I don't think anyone is making a case of Civ 6 being in an early stage of its development cycle. The fact that they didn't release the dll at a similar stage points to the (at this point very high) probability of them releasing it at the end of the cycle instead.

Releasing DLL/source code is not the norm for any other AAA publisher/title. My assumption is they are now just joining that 'norm' and won't release it at all.

Yeah, probably you are right.

CIV set scales several times and I took it for granted. Civ2 & civ4 were revolutionary in possibilities of modding. Unfortunately you only recognize what you have had, when you have lost it. :(

I still don't get the logic.

"Early" was civ4, civ5'DLL was later, civ6 is just even later, if ever.

But they could release it tomorrow and announce NFP season 2 next week, I mean why not, if they can/want to release it, it can be anytime during the development cycle, that time can be after the official support have ended, yes, but I don't understand why it would be a sign of it.

Or that the Next Thing is under wraps but coming soon and they want people to spend money on that rather than continuing to play the game they've already paid for.

I am pretty sure there will be further contend/patches. My best guess would be a leader pack for the Xmas season this year or a smaller season pass extending into Jan/Feb.

It just makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint, too. Considering how well Civ VI has sold by now, even if only 5 - 10 % buy furher DLCs, they will make a good amount of money without investing too many resources.

And with Civ 7 at least 2 or 3 years away I can't image Firaxis to leave the field to Humankind completely.

Well another thing to consider...

Firaxis still has at least four months to release uncontested content. So that's just free money before Humankind even comes out.

And then, on top of that, Humankind kind of has a pretty basic starting roster. I think the only things it offers as far as new cultures go are:

* A few ancient civs that Civ would never touch like the Olmecs and Harappans
* Some "split up" civs like different eras for England, France, Germany, China, Persia, and India. Which again civ doesn't need to touch and mostly has with alternate leaders.
* Weird alternative civ choices to fill out eras that not many people wanted like Mexico (which we already have Aztecs and GC as better substitutes) and Ghana (which we have Mali with more personality).

My point is, that Civ already covered all these basics, and it is highly unlikely to be looking at Olmecs, the Mughals, or Mexico for a second season pass. Which means, while Humankind will be released and just barely getting to baseline, Civ VI can still have unique things to offer that Humankind doesn't have.

Players simply won't have Bulgaria, Berbers, Burma, Navajo/Cherokee in Humankind. And likely won't ever or for a long time. So whatever Civ would likely release next year, outside of Assyria and Austria it would all be content unique to Civ VI that Humankind still can't compete with. Humankind will still likely do okay with players who want more streamlined mechanics, but Civ will still be the game with all the new shinies.

You underestimate nostalgia.

When Civ 5 was the current game people here only saw the problems and drawbacks. That there were only a few "best" paths to victory, etc.

When VII comes out people will complain that it's not more like Civ VI.

Fair, but most of the civs we're talking about here wouldn't even be on the boards of there weren't FIFTY (!!!) civs in the game already. The more we get the more we want. :D

He’s also underestimating how popular Civ 6 is. It’s the best selling game in the series bar none and is available on more platforms than any other iteration. It’s the first entry to the series for many many players, which will also strengthen the nostalgia factor you’ve referenced.

I think it’s good for us to take a step back every now and then and realize that this forum and many particular threads can become echo chambers of opinions that are not representative of the majority of the player base.

Civ 6 isn't THAT bad.... I will say it is better than non-modded civ 5 at this point.

Not to mention civ 6 is available in many different platforms- Playstation Xbox and Nintendo Switch...

Except those same reasons could be used to argue that the new Star wars would replace the previous one, or the new Jurassic Park, or the new Lion King...

Civilization became a legend not for being a more or less functional game that is not that bad. There is simply nothing exceptional about 6, and as such, I do not think anyone will remember it as long as it is replaced by a new installment. I’m afraid this is the Rise of Skywalker of the franchise, a pretty looking game that is kind of entertaining, and which kind of everybody bought, but that is also completely empty and kind of disposable. Noone will miss the new Star Wars with nostalgia, because it is just a souless product, and the same applies.

Maybe I am wrong, and the next game could be so bad people will come back to this one. Maybe Humankind or Civ 7 will kill this one, who knows. But is clear that this game would have not created its own franchise, or define the genre. People will not remember 6 as the best strategy game of its generation, but more like “One of the only big historical strategy games of the time, which was kind of ok, if you ignore it being shallow as a puddle and the AI not working for major components of single player”.

look at this thank you reddit thread to see how many people seems to like civ 6 and think it is a GOOD game. https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/mpz9xq/thank_you_firaxis_for_an_amazing_game_amazing/
You act like as if civ 6 is sims 4 of the franchise when... it ISN'T

Time will tell of course, but millions said the same thing about the new Star Wars ;)
And I did not say is a terrible game, or even bad. But aint no masterpiece either, and I would argue is very far from it.

wlep the sales say otherwise. I don't think civ 6 will be forgotten even if civ 7 manages to be better than civ 6... in fact in the early days of civ 7 I will grantee and bet all my money that people WILL complain that civ 7 isn't as good as civ 6 is. Will civ 7 beat civ 6 in the future? who knows but one thing I am sure is that civ 6 will NOT be forgotten anytime soon.

I've loved Civ 6, and it's what will likely have hooked me into the franchise. If they do another batch of content, I'll almost certainly return for another game as well.

I've never played the other games in the series, so that says nothing about previous games, but still. It's a good game in its own right.

I only played civ 5 before and to be honest with all the fault civ 6 have... I still like civ 6 better than civ 5 simply because of government and all civs having unique infrastructure- weather it being UD or UB or UI.

To be fair Civ V was in my opinion no masterpiece either. I would even say thar there is a terrific game if you take the best parts and ideas of 5 and 6 use them as the foundation for a game.

This game is in a very strange spot, after 5 years of dev cycle, 2 expansions, 20ish DLCs, and around 120$ of product. It feels like it overplayed its hand releasing content (which may or may not be worth the cost), and unfinished at the same time.

And look it is clear to me that some parts of the game work wonderderfully and are very funny, and at the same time no one would argue that some other parts are terrible and play like a chore. And more importantly, is not the best of the franchise at anything (except arguably citybuilding... with a dozen caveats). So no I dont think 6 is the cornerstone of the franchise, as many think it is, not by a long shot.

that's like your opinion man. There is a lot of people who feel satisfied with the game... even with all the faults. It is worth the money and DEFINITELY feel finished.

Honestly that's a plus to me considering I liked Rise of Skywalker more than The Last Jedi. I guess The Last Jedi was Civ 5? :mischief:

and that's a bad thing? not everything needs to be best to be remembered. look at AOE3 VS AOE2
People say AOE2 is best and yet AOE3 was NOT forgotten. Heck it even got remastered and recently got new civ.
If AOE3 did not got forgotten what makes you think Civ 6 will be forgotten?
