A little late to the party, I know, but I was quite impressed.
Up to now I had only heard her cover of that Tears for Fears song.

I think she is a more stylish and expressive Bjork, and is quite magnetizing.

You really never heard 'Royals'...? :hmm:

Mind you, she's grown up a bit since then...

She also (in the song you posted) reminds me a bit of Sia (whose work I mostly like a lot), but she doesn't seem to have quite as much vocal power/confidence.

That song was huge here 5 years ago iirc.

Yes she is very good. Most of the current big new female pop singers are in her image (Billie Eilish, Bea Miller, Jesse Reyez, Hey Violet sometimes, etc). I like Lorde's first album as she uses a lot of almost heroic "we" language like she's going to lead us to a new better tomorrow. Her second album is more about her emotions being a girl in LA and her observations of that, and a lot more "I" focused. Also good. Her followers are more self-centered in their lyrics as well, so I guess the "we" element didn't stick.

I would rank Lorde as the most influential singer of last decade.

Here (north Germany) too: Radio Hamburg played it daily (felt like that, at least).

NZ has a tendency to make a big deal whenever some does something internationally.

Was never sure how big the song was overseas.

I'm amused by the fact that I haven't heard of a single one of these people, nor this Lorde person.

I haven't. Can't say I like it either ^_^

Oh Lorde! She's pretty cool alright. I've only listened to the hits though. Perhaps I should dive deeper.

Never suggested you should. Didn't say I did, either! ;)

Given that about 95% of what Radio Hamburg play is crap to start with — and they've never played anything else from her since, that I recall — I basically wrote her off at the time, as yet another YouTube-wannabieber who got lucky with that one song.

That said, I just WIki'd here, and it said that YFB came out only a year after Royals. And she was only about 17-18 when she released those 2 songs, so if she's still going 5 years later, then credit where it's due...

I have no idea who Bea Miller, Jesse Reyez, or Hey Violet are.

I know of Eilish only because of Goggle Translate Sings

I'm not sure if I heard Lorde's "Royals" or Weird Al's parody of it first, but "Foil" is definitely better.

Not impressed with Lorde, would rather listen to a 15 year old tell me 'I am sorry.'

Just remember
Things change.
But not for old fools.:)

not too much competition, eh?

LDR was also influential, to my personal demise

adele also, also dislike her a lot

amy winehouse was cool at least, and pretty influential

and then there's the "stereotypically pretty girl singing over bland EDM music" that ellie goulding pretty much coined all on her own

there were also some really good singers tho, MIA is cool, as is Fiona Apple and Joanna Newsom

Kanye and Britney and Gaga and PSY were all more influential imo. The former two basically started the electronic pop infusion and whole synth pop, electronic pop, here's the drop pop, that helped get EDM exploding in popularity, which in turn helped resurrect the festival scene (see: Stronger). Plus 2017 saw rap finally eclipse pop and rock in numbers. Gaga's art pop vibe was aped by everyone for years, and even T Swift's new album and music videos still do. PSY basically pushed YouTube into full cultural zeitgeist and laid the groundwork for other Kpop groups like BTS and more to chart in the west.

Lorde's solid. Royals is one of her weakest so it's a shame it's played so much.
