ls612's C2C Units

@ls612

Here is a Ornithopter. It took a crazy amount of effort to make. First I was trying to get models extracted from Spore since there is a cheat that allows you to export creatures from the game into .dae format.

I have 3D Studio Max 6 which is one version too old for the .dae import/export plugin tool (reqs 3D studio Max 7 and up). So I went and downloaded Blender (another types of 3D software). It was free however I have no idea how to use it other than the simple import/export stuff. So I imported my .dae creature into Blender and then saved it in 3DS (3D Studio Max file type).

This allowed me to import it into 3D Studio Max. Yay! So I was wondering could I export Spore vehicles too? So I tried and it said only creatures. So I looked for a hack. There was none, however there was a Spore hack that allows for vehicles parts to be moved into the creature editor.

So I picked up a tool called Tsearch and followed a long tutorial on how to get the parts. It took a long time and some mess ups but i finally got some Ornithopter-like wings and Ornithopter-like tailfins exported into .dae format. Sicne they are unsported parts and since I have to have it go through Blender too all textures don't work.

So I imported them all into 3DS6 and added some stuff of my own, gave it a rogue for a rider and tweaked its positioning, made my own textures and finally after a long night of work made an Ornithopter!

In short do not expect anything else from Spore since its way too much work to do.

Also change you please chnage the name of the IL2 to Early Bomber? Thanks! I am trying to avoid specific types of aircraft/ships/vehicles.

Thanks! :goodjob:

@Hydro:

If you check your SVN log, you will see that I can now make buttons! Could you please give me the base for the unit buttons, so that they will look slightly better than the ones I put on the SVN? Thanks.

I think that this means I can also reskin units, which will be useful for some ideas I have for new units.

See this post.

@SO or Hydro:

OK, so I'm having some odd issues with making buttons. I have added three layers; the base, the button image I made, and the alpha channel. When I lock the alpha in GIMP and flatten, the exported DDS file is only 4 KB, as oppsosed to the normal 4 KB button. Am I making some obvious error, and if so what?

No offense to you, but this should really be in the Help Wanted Ad thread. But on the question IHNI (I have no idea).

Oh well, I figured out what I was doing wrong, I forgot to check "generate mipmaps" when I exported. It works now.

i hear that, i used to do that all the time, was in to much of a hurry, but thats what you get when your in a HURRY, mistakes:blush::p;)

Well, now I have a different issue, I can't get the Alpha channel to appear, and I think that will cause CTDs ingame. :( Any tips?

Well maybe and maybe not, in DXTBMP when i make a dds file, there is an option there at allows for a NON-Alpha channel its called DXT1 rather than the usually DXT 3. Testing is your best option, i try to all the stuff i put in, BUT sometimes again, the "hurry" portion takes over and i dont do it:blush:

Plus in DXTBMP you can make an alpha channel from anything, but it just doesn't come out as looking the best.

@Hydro:

Your Ornithopter model is messed up, it shows up as a red sphere. I'll need to wait to add it until after V24 is released.

All that means is the nif is wrong or the wrong kfm. (I believe, not sure)

So I tried to make a ground sloth for a new animal unit and in turn a megafauna rider using a model from Spore. However when it exported it not only lost the textures but some of the parts were missing on the face. I tried to repair it but with the new texture and weird face I think it looks too ugly to add. What do you think?

The eyes of course need to be fixed. Any megatherium is better than no Megatherium.

Couldn't you take mirror images of pictures off of google images and wrap or (form fill) the texture to create more realistic 3d models?

Doesn't Civ Fuehrer have some 3d modeling skills?, I think he mentioned it in the beginning of the ideas/discussions thread. You could always ask for his help, or advice.

I think its great Hydro! We can't expect initial perfection on models... just take notes of works in progress. I agree that its better to have them in the game and have them not quite looking perfect than to not have them at all... and our early game fauna has a lot to add to make that era capture quite the right feel.

I don't think so, I double-checked the spelling on the nif, and I have no kfm assigned to it, as Hydro's models don't use anims.

Are you sure? The names are off on my models ...

Name = Ornithopter
Folder = orthithopter
Graphic = ornithopter.nif
Button = ornithopter.dds

as you can see the correct name and the graphic have different spelling.

@ls612

Here is a new model for the Hand Ram. Please not only replace its model with this one but change its name to "Log Ram". Also please make sure the R in "Battering Ram" and "Siege Ram" is uppercase.

Thanks!

Great idea, Hydro! I've always been a little miffed by the 'hand ram' thinking there must be a better expression for the first step in that line and I'd say you just nailed it.

It'll be fine, it's not like you actually zoom in that close to your units in-game. It just needs a rider on top of it now.
