Both of those explanations are far fetched. We've had an ice kill and now a forest sprouted and then impaled someone. A more reasonable explanation is that the magic-user may channel different types of spells maybe as a means to frame innocents.

Despite all the colourful innuendo and banter that was leveraged against the Black Necromancer, it seems he was sorely missed. The other guild members were so shocked at his death that they could not even raise voice to accuse their suspects. The only thing that had raised any eyebrows at all was the nature of the Necromancers death and the White Thurmatage claiming use for the white rings.
