I would like to see Armageddon have a bigger and more lasting effect then it has at present. The current form honestly feels like a bit of a letdown when it finally triggers, even though the death it causes in unparalleled.
What follows is a quick list of random things I've come up with that would make Armageddon more fun. Feel free to pick and choose which one's you like.

More Hellgates
In addition to its other effects, Armageddon now also spawns another batch of demon spawning portals all over the world. For extra fun, give the spawned units stigmata and up the spawn rate from the original portals. Also be nice if they would turn the tile they spawn on into hell terrain.

Demon Barbarians
In addition to the usual orcs, demons of varying power are able to spawn in the world. Imagine the survivors' dismay when Balors start to pour in from the wastes.

Destroy Cities
Either a random number of cities below a certain size or just a raondom number of cities would work. It feels downright strange to have the worst thing ever happen to the world but still have all my bastions of peace and tranquility relatively intact. You could set it to destroy all cities below a certain population, but I think that would be a tad harsh on our Kuriotate friends.

Hell Terrain Everywhere
Cover the world in hell terrain when Armageddon hits, leaving only the cultural areas of the Good untouched. If there was a way to randomly create large patches of it hither and thither, that would be more aesthetically pleasing. At the very least, double the spread rate of the current hell terrain. Would work great with the idea of the demon spawning portals creating hell terrain at their location.

Cultural destruction
Reset/lower the culture of all cities and slow its growth for a number of turns. Erm...might be a tad harsh on those pursuing a cultural victory...but perhaps that's a good thing. Right now, the only thing you can do is wage a war which may or may not be feasible given your situation.
Anyway, getting rid of some culture has some nice effect to it. First, it nicely illustrates the decent of man's position in Erebus. Everything has gone to crap; no one has time for arts and crafts anymore. The need for survival has taken over, if briefly. Secondly, it gives more areas for barbarians to spawn. Nice synergy with the demonic barbarian ideas. Thirdly, it would allow hell terrain to spread into areas once owned by good Civs, meaning they would have to spend some time pushing it back once their culture is restored. Nice illustration of the new world struggling to cleanse itself.

AV Civs Gain Barbarian
When Armageddon hits, all Civs following AV gain a copy of the barbarian trait, save that it will never go away due to culture. Instead, it goes away if the Civ ever converts to another religion. Later converts to team evil do not gain the trait of course. That train's already left the station.
There are a couple nice synergies with this. First, the evil guys gain some benefit for being evil. Would also help to further polarize the world as the player must make the decision before Armageddon hits whether to embrace it, allowing hell terrain to spread but gaining a useful trait. Also means the few remaining good guys and neutrals will have the bulk of the barbarian troubles.

Horsemen Rituals
Ever wanted to command the unholy quad? Now you can! Just trigger Armageddon and complete the vile rituals and they will bend to your will. Did the horsemen already get whacked? :deadhorse: No problem! These handy dandy rituals will raise the gods' nightmares back from whatever pit the were buried in, ready to wreak havoc once again. Be warned though! Just because you control them now doesn't some other Civ can't do the ritual themselves, gaining control of them no matter where they are. Don't worry though, as you can repeat this ritual as often as you need.
Goody two shoes and neutral Civs need not apply. May require certain techs and the horsemen may be slightly crazed.

Create Your Own!
I hope you like my ideas. Especially any of the devs who read this thread...
Anyways, feel free to comment on mine and come up with some of your own. Let's turn Erebus into the diseased wasteland of pestilence and death it ought to be after the fires of hell have ripped it assunder.

Thirded... I've seen a few threads like this, but these are the first ideas of the kind that I've really liked

Nice ideas. The one time I caused armageddon as the Sheaim it was a bit of a 'This is it???' moment. I thought that the armageddon should be a bit more, well, apocalyptic. It would be nice to see Hell Terrain spread to good civ terrain, but the terrain in their initial culture cross are unaffected and the cant use hell versions of the resources. Now the Kuriotates and the Elohim cant sit their enjoying all the benefits of their nice land. It is the apocalypse.

Has Kael ever said what the apocalypse actualy is? I know it is a catastrophe, but what exactly is it?

Something like Ageres making creation more like his domain or something. I know that the horsemen are the fears of the gods, but I'm not too clear on the rest.

If Agares made Erebus his domain, wouldnt all mortals (with the possible exception of those that served him) be dead? He wants to damn the world so the One will see it is flawed and end it all, correct?

My favorite ideas are the hellgate and demon barbs ones. You'd have to actively defend your lands and rebuild improvements that the hellgates spawned on top of - not the kind of penalty that has enough randomness to completely shift faction balance despite their best efforts, but one that forces everyone to put some effort into dealing with a new threat.

I hate the city destruction one, it either punishes people with smaller cities or is completely random in who it screws over, depending on which implementation you pick. Neither is good. Besides, A "city" in Civ4/FfH is a huge metropolis - the fact that they can't be destroyed by anything other than a focused battalion of soldiers who have no defenders to stop them is how it should be. Any disaster strong enough to completely eradicate one of these metropolises that effects the entire world would logically melt the whole planet to slag.

The culture destruction idea sounds kinda neat, no idea how it would turn out in practice.

The hellification of the world idea would make any computer incapable of maxing Crysis at 2500x1600 explode with enough force to send the owner's giblets into high orbit. That alone is a disqualifier.

Horsemen should stay dead, but rituals for other things could be neat. Maybe the Avatar of Wrath could be linked to one instead of being a random spawn.

AV barb trait... meh. Don't like it. Driving up the AC and bringing this nasty stuff into the world should have negative effects on the people who did it. It doesn't really make sense for demons to play nice with humans just because they helped bring them to Erebus, you know? They're not that capable of gratitude towards lesser beings. If anything, I'd argue that anyone who still has Barbarian should lose it when the AC hits a certain point.

uhhh...i'd hate to see my precious little empire go down the drain when armageddon strikes (yeah...i'm more of a builder)...maybe this whole thing could be included as an additional option...
[ ] hell on earth
or sth like that...and please don't implement the city destruction thingy, especially not random...

I like the cultural degradation idea, but I am not sure how that would work without completely crippling the cultural rings of AV civs (especially the Sheaim and Infernals, who should want hell terrain). Perhaps have hell terrain lower the culture of nearby cities unless they worship AV? It seems fitting for a city to not be considered a great, culturally advanced place when its land is in ruins and everyone is eating frogs.

My favorite idea is adding hell gates to spawn as Armageddon gets worse. I would like to see these as dungeons, so as to add more late game (I love dungeons).

For demon barbs, I think randomly assigning certain ones stigmata as the AC goes up would be a simple way to go about showing the corruption of those out in the wild as all hell breaks loose.

Okay, no city destruction then. Figured that one might be pushing it. ;)

Well, let me go through my reasoning here. I'd like Armageddon to be more of a bad thing for good/neutrals and less of one for evil Civs. Making it so that the armies of evil demons that are now pouring into the world only go after the good ones would be one step in that direction.
My other reasoning is that, if you're really being evil, why would Agares care about you? You're continuing to aid him with your wicked ways and, in the end, your soul will be his.
Your comment on losing the barbarian trait did make me realize that it would need to be taken away from barb trait Civs that aren't following AV. Come to think of it, why even call it barbarian trait? New idea!

Demonic Vassal Civic
Under the same tree as the councils, requires a post Armageddon world and AV as state religion. Subtracts 25-50% of commerce, gives permanent peace with the now demonic barbarians, and maybe some other effects I'm not clever enough to think of. Perhaps automatically at war with all good civs. The thought process behind this is that your civ is now under control of their demonic overlords. Sure, you're still allowed to run the place, but with a heavy tithe. Demonic Vassals can, of course, still fight amongst themselves. Nothing wrong with that from Agares point of view.
I'm not sure how accurate this idea is with the teams vision of what Armageddon is. Certainly be fun though. Oh, and Hyborem should be able to adopt this civic without the commerce penalty. Basium can't. Not sure whether agnostic civs should be able to or not. I could see Cassiel doing it as a last resort, Aulric doing it as a way to delay until he can ascend and claim the broken world as his own. Meh, take or leave those last few thoughts as you will.

:mischief:

'' 'Cos I can beeee ee eee bigger, bigger
Stronger, strongeeeer
Harder, Haaaaaarder

I can beeee ee eee...''

:hide:

Read the ideas. Only one thing in my head now:
BURN, EREBUS, BURN! BWAHAHAHAHA!

Hmm ... Hellgate:London could be nice ... :D:D:D, or Hellgate:Torrolerial?

But then it would have to be taken away again after January...

I like the reducing culture idea; should be pretty easy to do and with faster hell spread you'd get a nice race to reculture or cleanse it if you're good. As you say, it'd suck if you're after a cultural victory, but that does make sense after what amounts to pretty much the end of the world happens :) Plus it means you can't always turtle up so much for a Sidar CV. Especially if Last Days is on - I had a game the other day which I won a few turns before the counter hit 100 (not through culture, though), having spent the whole time thinking the counter was going up a lot before I remembered I'd turned Last Days on.

Good ideas, Fafnir!

i really like the idea of AV civs gaining the Barb trait a lot! in fact, i love them all. i just dont like the city destruction one. i think that all of the barb demons and the horsemen can make that happen on their own.

and some sea serpents? or kraken?

(no, we want turtles? why do we want turtles? they're good eating. giant turtles are too big to eat! little turtles. we want little turtles with armageddon. no we don't, we'll be eating toads. ecch. of course ecch, that's armgeddon)

Some more interestin sea barbs would be cool. Maybe water demons?

Just as an in general, I've always felt that the game would benefit from more sea-based barbarian activity. Always kept things lively in Civ and Civ 2.
Some nasty sea-beasties coming in after Armageddon would be fun. Water demons...do those exist? Perhaps Armageddon would help Hastur in messing with...er...that one god...name begins with a D... Ah well. Maybe Armageddon could make D-god's dreams worse somehow, causing some really nasty things to come out of the waterworks. Barbarian Stygian Guards might be fun.
