In my country, if you want to drive a car, you have to get a certificate of technical clearance on it.

Every other year, your car is suspect to a technical inspection.

There is a so called "Technical Survaillance Coorporation", that will testify that your car is suitable for partaking in road traffic. Only if the car passes this inspection, you are allowed to drive on.

I wonder, if there are similar laws in your country?

Yeah, I believe there are such tests in Norway. At least there is this EU test. Don't know if those tests occur that often, though.

In the Netherland we have exactly that aswell, it's called APK here..
It's compulsory throughout Europe IIRC..

I think you have to get a roadworthy certificate every time you change ownership of a car. Technically it's always supposed to be roadworthy, and the cops can pull you off the road and stop you driving if it isn't roadworthy.

In the US (NC, at least) you have to get your car inspected yearly.. It's nothing more than making sure all the lights/horn/etc work, the tires are in decent shape, and the major systems (ie catalitic convertor) are in decent shape. Cost about $10 and takes about 10 min to do. No big deal.

I don't know anthing mandatory here in Californnia, but then again I could be wrong. However, when you buy your car they tell it's good to get checkups every so often, ubt as far as I can tell, it's not mandatory.

The M.O.T. as it is called here. You need to get it tested every year after the first three years on a new car.

There are no requirements like that here in Illinois, US
