Many Leaders Game

Played to 800AD

Spoiler :
Capture a barb city Harappan with rice, sugar and banana. Good food city. One more city (Konya) built. Another barb city Anasazi captured.

Badly misjudged the Oracle, still not built. Start it up but just for the cash. Pick up 26gp once it falls in 125BC!

Research Code of Laws (founded confusion), Calendar (trade), Metal Casing, Archery (trade), Horseback Riding (trade), Monotheism (trade), Monarchy (trade), Civil Service, Machinery, Currency (trade), Construction and Paper.

Great Library built

One GS popped and academy built. 2nd is being saved for Education.

Shaka declares on Gandhi :goodjob:.

Once I got machinery I started the maces up catapults and crossbows as well. Shaka will be my target. He is currently minus Civil Service, Metal Casing and Construction but he does have Feudalism. Longbows still die against maces and catapults you know .

I managed to research at 100% the entire time, due to (deliberately) failed wonders, cheap courthouses and then Currency.

At 800 AD
Leader with...

Most total beakers; researched, traded, extorted or popped,

Mehemed with 8770 (plus a GS in the pocket)

Alexander only played 40 turns. He is bringing in 92 beakers/turn so in ten turns should have about 8600

Alexander. 7559. projected = 8600
Hannibal 7703
Victoria 6739
Brennus 5222
Augustus 4641

Most total commerce /turn
Hannibal 162
Victoria 124
Mehemed 94
Brennus 81
Augustus 67
Alexander 42

Most total Hammers / turn
Augustus

Most % land
Victoria

Most cities
Victoria

Most population (citizens)
Brennus

Most 'soldiers'
Brennus

Most wonders
Hannibal 4 + shrine

City with;

highest beakers/turn, Carthage/Istanbul - both 85/turn
highest raw commerce, Carthage
highest health , Hadrumetum (Carthaginian)
highest happiness, Carthage
highest shrinegold, Carthage
highest hammers/turn Neopolis

Notes, Hannibal has caravels nearly done, so those trade routes are going to open up even more.

Mehemed’s research tricks, if you didn’t read them, run at 100% through missing wonders intentionally, cheap courthouses and currency (I presume for merchants and selling techs?)
Interesting that these methods are beating Philosophical,(only just), and financial, financial/trade routes

Action notes,

Victoria - Shaka destroyed. At peace 10 cities

Brennus - Shaka destroyed, Gandhi sick 9 cities

Hannibal - No war yet 7 cities

Mehemed – No war but gearing up 7 cities

Augustus - No war yet 6 cities

Alexander - At war with Shaka 5 cities

Questions for Kanga. How do you deal with mercantilism when it starts to become popular as it sometimes does?
Also, are you timing an attack on civs on this continent with the opening up of new trade routes on the other?

Learning all the time. I noticed Pigswill built on the marble site on the south coast. He built a monument first, then a courthouse. The borders popped to allow marble for the Great library .I settled on the same spot but built a courthouse first, the border didn’t pop of course, and I don’t have marble for the GL..

Interesting that on the same map, in the same number of turns, I have about 53% of the tech that Ozbenno and fbelintani have. Lots for me to learn about research.
On the other hand I’m banking on the expansion I did to pay off. What’s the difference between teching quickly to maces/ crossbows then attacking longbows, as opposed to focusing on production and taking the same land early against archers??? I guess we will see.

Anyone thinking about a cultural victory?

I find a quick early expansion usually leaves you with a weaker economy longer term, as you probably don't have too much infrastructure built before expansion and then you struggle to catch up tech wise in the late game. In this game probably not a problem but if you fall behind in techs to a nutcase (Alex, GK, Qin) they'll be knocking on the door quick.

I'll answer the second question first.

Bwah Ha HAAAA!

:mischief: I do favor a nice tech advantage when warring...

As to the first question, it depends. If it really does stifle the trade routes, then jumping into it yourself is sometime the best option, though I often find there is at least one other trading partner.

I'm thinking, turnset 4: 50 turns, 2 days. Takes us to 1400 AD, Thursday.

Could see some blood letting all round.

no bites on the cultural victory?

The stats that I'm collecting are interesting for me.I hope for others too. I wonder if anyone has a veiw on which stat is very telling about an empires situation. Or maybe a combination of stats. What tells the story when you look at the demo screen or the other screens?

Any ideas?

I think that the next set will be useful because we've got to the stage where its peaceful expansion followed by peaceful development (Hannibal, Mehmed, Augustus)to be followed by war of expansion next set or peaceful expansion, war of expansion (Victoria, Brennus) to be followed by peaceful development(Victoria) or maybe more war (Brennus).

Well, being number one in hammers maybe I didn't use them the right way.
And being Rome + having war elephants I lost an opportunity to clean
the continent early.

Guys, you may have seen my sig. I'll be OoP 'till Christmas. I'm not at home right now. I'll be back in town Thursday night only and I think I will not be able to play that many turns. Sorry. Let's hope I can install on the work's notebook tonight and play some. ;)
So, Alex will be way behind the others. Maybe after this round we play less turns...

I see oyu're only just hooking up iron. that's a big setback for Rome. The preats will soon be fighting Longbows, but that's OK for them.

@Kanga_DU

I already see a huge difference in researching between our 2 games.

It's the trade routes. Carthage is pulling in 32 raw commerce per turn in trade alone.

I feel the same way comparing my game to the teach leaders. for example my commerce per turn isnt much lower than Ozbenno's, but he's way ahead in tech. Just comes down to experience I think.

fbelintani, if you cant get a save in we can close turnset 4 without yours and then maybe take a break for Christmas. Catch up when you can,no harm done.

As Pigswill said, the next set could get interesting as we see the foundations start to bear fruit and the wider strategies become clear.

I was dreaming when I thought we could get finished by Christmas. fbelintani suggested shorter turnsets. After 1400 I guess we can see what people want to do.

Also Hannibal's caravels will be revealing our nieghbours soon so for those who want to play it straight, caution when opening spoilers.

Roosevelt owns Kagoshima, means Japan is in the game too. Meet Tokugawa.

The last leader must be Saladin, because an Arabian trireme is floating around
the American coast.

meetsaladinib3.jpg

Well, the game is a diplomatic disaster, because of all the religions.

Nearly 50 turns of peace and building, followed by another attack on Gandhi.
Neighbors met at the end of the set.
Spoiler :

Great Library built, and HE.

M casting , C.S , theology (trade) , Philosophy...

Currency (trade) Machinery (trade?,cant remember) feudalism (trade)Compass, Optics, caravels off...

Captured Dehli. Met the neighbors.

The other continent is all Confucian. Roosevelt (plesaed)will attack his neighbors for all my techs. Thinking about that.

Great moment as Dehli falls with an axemen at 52% taking down the defending knight

Taking_Dehli.jpg

Lots of libraries, forges and missionaries. Then medieval military builds. Dehli has Hindu shrine.

Spoiler :
Goals for this turn-set.

Engulf Zululand into Greater Turkey
Be first to Liberalism (want to take Steel but would settle for Chemistry)
Circumnavigate first and discover all other AIs.

Now the reality.

Research is Paper, Education (burned GS for part), Meditation (begged from Gandhi :)), Philosophy (would have gone Compass here but Taoism not doiscovered), Feudalism (trade), Compass, Optics, Liberalism (stop 1 turn from finish), Engineering, Gunpowder, Chemistry, Liberalism (last 1 turn), Steel (from Liberalism), Guilds, Drama

I decided in 940AD that I was going to declare on Shaka the next turn and IBT he declared .... on Gandhi.

War declared on 960AD. I sell Shaka Currency for all his gold before I declare as this means he won't have any upgrade cash.

uMgungundlovu is taken in 1010 for the loss of 1 catapult. I raze Ondini in 1120AD. The war bogs down in a mess of WW (within about 5 turns ) so after taking kwaDukuza I get peace. Not quite the result I was after.

Discover Taoism.

We get another GS, I merge him in Istanbul. A GG builds an academy in Istanbul.

I meet Saladin, Tokogawa and Roosevelt. Unless there is a third small island that's all the AI. I also got the circumnavigation bonus.

My first cannons start to appear and the second Zulu war is about to start! I won't trade at all now. I'm about two military techs ahead (no-one else is at Education yet) so cannons and janissaries should roll everyone from here if I can handle the WW. It'll be interesting to see if I will need more than the area of our island for domination.

Quiet turnset:

Circumnavigation in 1240.
Liberalism (astronomy) in 1340.
London doing ok as research/capital.
Sandhurst doing the business as military city.

Friendly with Gandhi and Roosevelt. Others cautious. Napoleon and Gandi have been at war and are furious with each other.

Plan:cruise towards rifling and next war vs Gandhi (only serious rival)

So with the season upon us it seems a break is in order. 3 games at 1400.

Shall we continue when the other saves come in after Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all those who dont hate it, and happy holidays to those who do.

I'm off to the beach for a swim.

Spoiler :

Well I gt sooo carried away I had to play an extra turn. :p

I resumed with a just vague idea to consolidate and see if a war opportunity opened up. As it was nothing came of that. :D However I'm reasonably happy with the progress. I've got a small tech lead which I hope to improve on, then I'll be ready to hopefully roll through on a quick war...

So I'll avoid Economics/Corporations for while. Chemistry is out for a while too (Temple of Artermis). I can get infantry without Chemistry? Can't remember just now.

Ok I played one to many turns, meh, so bite me. Got all excited at the new horseys to breed... I also for the most part laid off the whip, I wanted the cities to grow, grow, grow. I probably should move out of slavery... maybe once I have democracy I'll see my option.

Vicky's taken, by the mighty Pigswill. Pick again, and great that you are in the game. I've got a Ramesses save all ready because Cabert bailed out, but any other leader is OK.

Isabella has joined the fray in the form of vra37991.
save is below.

Isabella, expansive, spiritual.

Brennus is spiritual and founded Buddhism.

Expansive, Mehemed also expansive has gone for peaceful expansion, if your not a barbarian. There's good land to take off the barbs if you dont want to war. Victoria ,Augustus, and Alexander have attacked a near neighbor, and Brennus has gone on the warpath more or less constantly.Hannibal also peceful so far

You have fishing to which is good for this map.

I guess we'll see soon your playstyle. It's Prince BTW.

Play is up to 1400 AD. Post 3 saves or just your 1400 one, as you like.
