Master Map Change Thread

Legend of Korra season is over. We're back in coolkid mode ;)

By the way, I have cough medicine if anyone needs some.

More is not simply better.
What needs to be understood is that whatever works for other mods, like Sengoku or Sword of Islam doesn't necessarily work for DoC.

The reasons? I have several.

I agree with this.

But, here's my rebuttal as to how this concerns semidesert

-DoC is NOT a kitchen sink mod. Meaning we don't try to cram in every feature possible based on the understanding that certain features, because of design differences, may contradict each other.
Yes, but a terrain type that is slightly more fertile than desert, and is more a cosmetic thing than anything else is not a major feature that will break this game, and does not really require a lot of balancing, like Titles would, or dozens of new civs, or new techs, etc...
-DoC strives for gameplay balance, which is hard to achieve due to deviance across scenarios, AI outcomes,
difficulty levels and game speed, by nature of this mod itself, as a worldwide history simulator.
Therefore, balance is delicate and must be attended to with care.
And adding 1 food to some desert tiles and changing the graphics to make the mod more esthetically appealing disrupts balance how?
-Other mods have features tailored for their mod based on scope.
Sengoku is a fantastic Warring States period simulator and the balance of that game revolves around that.
A new terrain type is not so much a feature, as an improvement to already existing features.
The diplomacy and warfare in particular are perfectly designed to simulate the conditions of that era; conditions that would not be appropriate for other time periods of Japan.
I don't see what semidesert has to do with Sengoku or Japan.
C2C has no qualms about being a kitchen sink mod because you're supposed to enjoy the zoom-in on smaller human achievements and play on Eternity speed or something.
It's the only mod I even try to play the slowest speed as a result.
Semidesert is not a kitchen sink thing. It makes the map significantly better looking IMHO.
DoC from my PoV, is about the simulation of human history along similar lines of development somewhat congruent to our own timeline, with a healthy amount of deviance.
And adding a new terrain that already has graphics and code from SoI disrupts the balance how?

It's more that I'm sure that semidesert wouldn't even have been suggested if it wasn't for SoI.

I'm also not sure where the "it won't require rebalancing" argument comes in. Either there is a problem that semideserts can solve, then including them inherently means rebalancing. Or there isn't, in which case our friend de Saint-Exupéry applies.

I don't see the point in semi-desert at all. If you go to most arid places without a major water source like a lake or a river, the population is definitely smaller. By adding this terrain, we make those regions either more populated or more useful than they actually are.

If anything, perhaps new minerals such as copper or whatnot can be scripted to appear in some desert regions after a time, and even that is a stupid idea.

It's more a cosmetic thing than anything else. Looks play an important role in the immersion and overall quality of the mod.

And why does it matter where an idea comes from, if it a good idea?

Wow! Just in time! I have begun coughing some hours ago. But... the shipping from Germany to Belarus would be difficult...
So close and yet so far ...

If it's a good idea, it doesn't.

More work than worth.

How isn't semidesert a good idea?

No. DoC isn't SoI. The penalty for movement is a good balance feature.

EDIT:
Also, according to SOMEBODY:
Yes, let's add every conceivable civ including Pirates, and give each pirate their own civ. And on top of that, let's butcher the leader names as well. Also, someone suggested Venice before me.

Also, let's add every feature from SoI, including the display colour.

Lastly, let's just randomly double the map size without heed to how much time that will take.

There. SoI on a global scale with a bunch of other ideas that took five minutes to think up of without heed to the programming. All better!:D

That is pretty much how someone's ideas seem to pan out, IMO. I don't mean any offense, but please think out ideas before you post them!

How about this as a compromise?

Semidesert is an overlay over desert - nothing different but graphics
The SoI graphics are used for it on blue marble (because they already match the blue marble graphics)
the regular desert are used when blue marble is not used (in other words, it is invisible)

That way, you don't have to worry about blending it with default terrain.

This should be pretty easy, and not impact gameplay.

Leoreth, what do you think of this?

Don't ruin my blue marble. Seriously though, why should Leoreth add a new type of tile just for a graphic?

And get back to whatever this thread is supposed to be about, not that I support much of it.

A corn and fish appear in that area later, making Mumbai a massive city. But I no longer play that late into game

Something tells me that fish is already there :D
