MatteM's unit modeling and retexturing workshop 2018-11-05

Are you still working on your mod Matte?

Yes, however I became a father in february so haven't had as much time as before, I am currently working on "Steam and Iron" era naval units, I love this particular time period of naval history, here are the Ironclads
in my mod:

And congrats becaming father, that is the biggest thing in mans life.

Thanks! I tell you what you could become beta-tester for the mod, I have a lot of plans for scenarios in the future, I'll contact you by message.

Btw are you good at making maps? I need someone who is well versed in map making :)

What kind of ships are the first preview? The second preview looks like Steam Frigates?

The first pictures are the Ironclads, which will be the main capital ships of these navies, the second are screw frigates, which are steampowered, the term steam frigate might refer
to the paddle-wheel ones as well, those will be on a separate preview picture :)

I feel that the two periods of naval history least represented in the user-created art for Civ4 are steam ships before the emergence of protected/armoured cruisers and pre-dreadnoughts, and modern ships (e.g. Ford-class carrier, Independence-class LCS, or Type 055 destroyer). Having no artistic bone in my body I have to live vicariously through the efforts of people like you. It looks like the former gap in units will be filled when these are released. They look fantastic, MatteM.

I can be your betatester, it sounds fun:) I have been modding civ4 way over 10 years for personal use so im also cabable for tracking and fixing all problems related to xml.

When it comes to maps then yes and no.. Im expert in resource layout on maps if you r looking for realism. But otherwise im only experienced WB user.

@MatteM Btw, what mod you r using as base for your mod..? I think its highly important to use right kind of base if you r going to have what 2000+ units in there?:crazyeye: You surely r going to test civ4 limits here.. I have about 2500 unit models in my personal "unit databse"-modmod and its close to a limit of this game engine I think.

I agree, that is why I have collected a lot of models to convert to civ 4, still looking for any protected cruiser or armored cruiser from late 1800s I can find so please let me know if you see any models around, perhaps in other games. WW1 could also be interesting but I have plenty of those, and most of the ww2 stuff.

Good, I do need people testing who have played the game and different mods a lot, to be honest I never have time to play it, well perhaps when it first came out in 2005-06 :D

I am using RevolutionDCM at the moment, I am thinking about switching to Advanced Civ though, since those guys seem to be actively developing the mod. Well the mod already has over 3500 unit models and I haven't noticed any
problems booting it up so far, granted it takes 5-10 minutes the first time, but then when the mod is in the memory it goes pretty fast! I also have over 250 techs at the moment and my unitinfos.xml is about 25mb :D I will not be using fpk. I won't be using modular xmls either to any great extent I think.

Now the mod is more a base for building scenarios, I have a hard time seeing playing it from 4000 bc to 2050 AD in a lifetime lol but sure it could probably be done, there are people completing playthroughs of Caveman to Cosmos.

My aim is not to make another RI or Caveman to Cosmos though, as those are more made for playing from beginning of human civilization to end. My primary aim is to focus from industrial era to current times. My main inspiration is from playing a lot of Paradox Interactive games.

Tricky part with ships from this era is finding good reference material, sometimes there is only a grainy photograph of a ship that has been turned into a training vessel 50 odd years later or an oil painting :) I think Jane's fighting ships came out somewhere in the late 1800s but old copies are really expensive. However I am tempted to start collecting!
