Mayor problems for team Roadkill

Pholk, wishing you the best for the next turnset :)

Sorry for delaying the game so much, things have been hectic for me lately. that being said, here's the report:

Start off by mustering our forces up towards Susa. Used the spies there to take down the walls for us, and:
Civ4ScreenShot0026-2.jpg

Following that, it looks like Darius got Guilds and Engineering as I soon saw Pikes, Trebs and Knights flying about. I took out a small stack before it got to Susa, thinking I may continue the fight, but instead I turtled up.

Built several christian misisonaries, and one more jewish. We still need probably 5 christ. ones. The Sistine came in, and I decided to gamble on Sankore. Also stuck a stable in Bursa for some Flank II HAs to help with the trebs we're seeing.

I think we should take this trade:
Civ4ScreenShot0027-1.jpg

should help out, and once our metal is online and we have soem pikes, Ithink we could continue the war. I also think we should stay at war and get some triple XP towards GGs while we wait.

However, at Susa:
Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

that's just one knight below Susa, but a mini-stack with about 3 or 4 trebs above it. I whipped walls into Susa, but if Darius decides to go south with his army and bypass Susa (would show incredible intelligence for the AI) we're borked.

Since we are trying for Sankore, we really need to cancel the stone deal. Can we find another source of furs?

I would whip that forge in Canterbury - that kills 2 red faces and gives us another happy in that city.

Hopefully with Sistine completed we can start to recover the missing tiles in Nottingham and London.

Economy continues to be the challenge. Despite the courts started my turn finishing, and Pholk getting more missionaries built we still are only +8 and 0% science.

I think we should take the engineering deal as well.

When I made the stone trade to Sury I didnt expect us to keep it this long, if we are still really need the happy maybe we can trade him horses instead?

I think the economic story will stay the say the entire game. Even as we finish some infastructure to help the economy we take a city to bring it back down. Perhaps targeting the Spiral Miranet would help?

Are we still in the liberalism race or should we give it up? If we are in it what are we targeting?

Nice turnset! Susa in and 3 more GP in the running :) Is Saladin not willing to hand in some more money with that deal. We are giving him a lot. Can we beg drama btw from some of our friends like the dutch?

As far as I know we are full in the race for liberalism. If we are far enough we might even get Sury get so far that he is willing to attack Darius for education. We could use a good ally. Darius is in full war mode and he is ahead in military techs.

I have a bad feeling you are right.
Hopefully as we keep spreading the word of Christ and get a market in Canterbury we get another boost.
I think we will need to build courts in cities even where the gain isn't a lot.

Had a look at the save and I would say good turnset Pholk. We are indeed building UoS. With stone it cuts us down to 10 turns instead of 14. This will cost us however a happy and some gold. Is it worth it? Are we in danger of loosing this wonder? How long ago did we trade it? The Khmer also have paper so they will likely build the wonder. I say we deny them the stone and increase our build rate. This wonder will boost our science rate by 28 beakers (before multipliers) which is already 30% at this moment. After we are done building trade it again to the Khmer. Since the Khmer also have divine right, you can bet your a.. he is also building the spinal minaret, so that is a no go.

Cities:
1) Capitol should finish wonder and then build market. It will net us in 13 gold right now. We could then fire the engineer and just grow on the lake for more income.
2) Konya: At size 5 it can work another gem. This will increase our economy again. We should get some farms on the plain forests to increase growth there and increase builds.
3) Canterbury should whip the forge asap and then start on jewish temple and monastery.
4) York: Should work the river plain cottage instead of the mine. Insert the temple after missionary. We can use the happies and the hammers there (and the beakers later on).
5) Bactra: Work the other tiles now such as sheep.
6) London: Whip the market asap and start on units. There are way too little cities building units for the full scale war we are having right now. Also swap the plains mine to a gem mine for more coins.

We have a spy in Dariush Kabir. Do we want to conquer it or use it to steal guilds? I think Persepolis and Pasargadae are much more important so I would like the spies over there.

Then I was thinking, why are we building christian missionaries as jewish missionaries are more important? We can build the super religious buildings, get more culture and the market is already in place.

Saladin is willing to trade engineering and gold for music and paper. I would say lets go for it and then get some pikes.
The chinese want calendar for 120 gold. We could use that money.

Since the dutch are still friendly can we beg drama from them? These guys normally give up techs easily.

I guess we are going to take out the stack outside Susa? If we wait for the trebs to come rolling in, they will hurt us a lot I am afraid. As there are hardly any defensive units in place (knights and trebs do not receive defensive bonusses) we could attack them and obliterate it and then push on to the capitol. We have another GP and another GG coming in soon so we could conquer a lot but we need units for that. Darius almost has banking (grmbllll) so that means he will get economy next. We could also steal that from him with a spy and go into mercantalism to boost our GP growth and get more beakers with repres (33 beakers at least with 11 cities and more coming).

We are indeed building UoS...
Are we in danger of losing this wonder?
High danger - Khmer had the stone and tech for a decent amount of time.

1) Capitol should finish wonder and then build market.
Agree, but we badly need to get another tech to build a wonder here.

Do we want to conquer it or use it to steal guilds?
I vote guilds.

Then I was thinking, why are we building Christian missionaries as Jewish missionaries are more important?
IIRC *all* of our cities are already Jewish. Outside of a stray Dutch city we have no place to send a Jewish missionary. OTOH we have plenty of cities that we can send Christian to.

Saladin is willing to trade engineering and gold for music and paper.
Agree - we have plenty of wars coming up, and need to keep up in military tech. Hopefully a good chunk of gold...

started the wonder thinking that if we don't get it, we could definitely always use the gold.

christ missionaries are b/c we also have that shrine for extra cash for 3 turns of work.

re: stack ~ i have Flank ii HAs there to soften up the trebs, but my thinking was take the hit for some extra xp towards another GG while we get ready to attack.

I am up for the next round so my plans would be:
1) Cancel stone deal. We are in high danger of loosing the UoS and I really want that wonder for the GP points and the extra beakers.
2) Hit the stack outside Susa. The stack has 3 or 4 trebs in it, meaning that all defender will get hit (3 or 4 extra targets take colateral right?). Also the units that are hurt are food for the knights that are close. If we soften the stack up with our HA's then the macemen can mop up for extra xp. If we take the hit we are certain that we have to wait for a couple of turns to heal.
3) Build a load of units more. I will switch a some cities to building units. We need more cats.
4) Rebuild the copper mine asap. Right now we can only build Ha's and catapults.
5) Trade calendar with the chinese for 120 gold. Trade engineering and 120 gold for paper and music.
6) Capitol: UoS -> Market.

I agree to more units after the current builds are done. We are running to constant tight for economy that I feel we must always have a least one city working on economy buildings.

Even spreading the word of Christ still helps the economy.

I will get missionaries out (1 jewish for susa and the rest christian). I will see if I can get some whipping done and picking up some other high commerce tiles (like in London). If I have some time tonight I will play a short round on recovering the economy.

if you can, i might try hitting the stack w/trebs and see if the AI attacks w/them anyway. If not, then take out the stack.

What a turnset!!! Everything is in here. Big stuff, sneaky stuff, missing stuff, fighting stuff, rearranging stuff, economy stuff. Well you get it.

T0: I cancel the stone deal with Sury. I whip the forge in Canterbury and I redirect the tiles as proposed. We are now at +7 gpt.

T1: Trebs take down our defenses in Susa to 0%. We loose 1 unit in the attack and kill 2. I notice we have no more metals and get the workers to the copper.

T2: Trebs attack and both win. We loose 2 units after that but we kill 4. HA's from all places to this city.

T3: We kill a pikeman and we move the stack towards the capitol. I want that one. I promote our longbows in Susa for defense. This was a good choice as they will kill another3 units during this turn. A GG is born.

T4: We kill another knight. I trade engineering and 190 gold for music and paper with Saladin. Forgot about the trade but that is a nice sum of gold. I try to beg drama from the dutch. Yes, we get it. GS is born in the capitol

civ4screenshot0026h.jpg

We get an election for the pope and I vote for us. First christian missionary fails though. I whip a temple in York and select a Hamam next. This city is going to be huge.

civ4screenshot0027h.jpg

I check the trading screen and see that Sury has an enormous amount of money. We might considering to sell education to him later on.

civ4screenshot0028q.jpg

T5: We become pope but not easily.

civ4screenshot0029a.jpg

We need to spread judaism to Susa asap. I spot a sneaky knight and have to upgrade to archers to longbows.

T6: I loose a maceman on a hill against a knight. Pffff. I spread judaism to Susa. 3 more turns to the UoS

T7: Victioria comes asking for open borders. I agree. We can use a little diplo with her. Sury builds UoS. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Oh well, we get a sh.tload of fail money. Still it gets me pissed. I use the spy for a revolution in Persepolis. It succeeds. I suicide 4 cats or so on the capitol and then mop up. We loose 2 more units but Darius is down 1 capitol and 9 units :) Take that.

civ4screenshot0030.jpg

T8: We withstand the initial barrage on the capitol. We kill 4 units but loose 2. We kill the sneaky knight and our workers can finally get back to copper hill. We need it badly. 11 turns before the cultural borders pop at our HE city so we can finally acces the iron. God, we need it.

We could take the peace with Darius but I am afraid we will get swamped in culture so it is not an option.
civ4screenshot0031i.jpg

Right now we have still 2 GP in our stack but we need reinforcements badly. I am still building like mad and we need more to keep the war going. I hope we can bribe sury into a war with Darius for education and get some money in return. We have also 2 more gp in a city on hold. Overall things are not looking that bad.

Woot Buddist holy city! Plus it has really nice infastructure in there.

I will try and look at the save tonight for a Plan with the goal to play thursday night, but I may not be able to play until Sunday night.

Points that I am thinking without seeing the save:

a)dont trade education to Sury, he allready has philosophy, so if we trade = lose liberalism.
b)diplocatically I don't think DOW's on Darius cost us much so I will consider peace for 10 turns if I dont think I can take any more cities or If I fear to lose his capital. Culture is a problem but SC, SH, and spreading Jusism ASAP and then whipping temple all attracitve.
c)Milititarily the next target city is the one with stone, just north of Bursa. getting rid of that culture will help alot plus allow a direct path from our HE city to the front.
d)I will try and steal Guilds. Knights sound good! Plus Darius has a Monopoly on it. I will happily bribe wars and or give up Guilds for gold or as tribute to Sury, WvO, or Saladin. If Sury manages to build AnkorWat maybe he will trade Philosophy, which I would love to trade for.
e)Keep one but hopefully two cities in missionary duty, both christ and buddist now.
f)Keep ESP's on darius to Revolt cities. Switching to Sury if we achieve a firm upperhand on Darius in the future sounds good.

I would even renogotiate the stone deal with Sury asap. I bet my life on it that he is building Angkor Wat and spiral minaret so he will pay for it gladly with fur and some gold hopefully.

About taking peace. Whipping the jewish monastery and temple there combined with our army should hold of revolts. So this is not a bad plan.

We can also build up our troops (pikes are so necessary) and we will get the iron online which we need even more. We only have 2 or 3 cats left in our stack and we might want to replace them with trebs (HE city can build 2 of them each 3 turns). We need the copper mine back online (I have 3 workers on them). Stealing guilds is not an option yet. We need a lot of espionage points for that (about 2000) and after the revolt it will take us about 20 turns to gather that much. Maybe after education me might want to switch to the military techs and hope for a trade with Sury (philo). On the other hand, maybe Darius is really forgiving and we can trade guilds for music and calendar or something :p

We really need to get rid of that culture around Perse as it happens any unit movement on our part, so i wouldn't take peace until you can get our army out (or it looks like its about to be annihilated ~ which i don't think is foreseeable as I and Kill took out fairly sizable mini-stacks)

Well Darius is still in full war mode and the knights are quite irritating. We need metals asap and we can keep the war going. There is still a stack of 10 units or so in Perse and 4 HA on the way and another ministack of 4 in Susa.

I will try and look at the save tonight for a Plan with the goal to play Thursday night, but I may not be able to play until Sunday night.
Any updates?
e)Keep one but hopefully two cities in missionary duty, both Christ and Buddhist now.
I agree 100% - we are to military heavy at the moment. We badly need to keep some focus going on the economy. Buddhist really rocks as the city already has market and grocer.

Looking at the game I really don't understand all the irrigated plains by Konya. IMO there are the worst possible improvement in the game. We gain squat before biology, and are upping our maintenance costs by grow our cities up. I would rather have a small city then one working a bunch of crap plain tiles.
What is our plan to open up another wonder? We really need more GP being generated, and I don't see the plan to expanding it more at the moment.
