Medieval European Mod II Preview

@Lord Cooper
I prefer this one - Borg's doesn't look European to me and this one has special modifications for this scenario, among other things different marshes and woodland that replaces jungles. I've also borrowed palm trees and alps from RFRE terrain (I think, not sure who has made them) and all in all I'm quite decided on this mix ;)

sounds good man, if i end up wnating to use his ill just edit the folders myself, easy to do anyways. lol looks awsome though man keep up the good workk!! i CAN NOT WAIT FOR THISS! :goodjob:

@Sword_of_Geddon
1st post in this thread has previews of all four tech tree eras that show the units for England, which would be similar for most European states. But in short it looks something like this: (a lot depends on the civ, not just in terms of flavors)

Defensive: Spearman -> Mailed/Heavy Spearman -> Pikeman -> Halberdier

Infantry: Warrior -> Swordsman -> Infantry/Man-at-Arms -> Arquebusier

Ranged: Archer -> Composite/Heavy Archer -> Crossbowman -> Arquebusier (joined)

Cavalry: Horseman/Nomad -> horse archers or knights -> chivalric knights or some light cavalry -> Cavalier / late heavy cavalry or Longbowman in case of the English -> Pistolier/Reiter/Spahi/Hussar

Mercenaries (limited availability): irregular, depends on civ: Mercenary Guard, Alan/Cuman/Vlach Cavalry, Desert Cavalry, Camel Riders, Swiss Pikes, Landsknechts, Galloglasses, Condottas, Ghilman etc.

Ships: Boat/Currach -> Galley/Longship/Lodya -> Great Galley/Cog -> Caravel/Hulk -> Carrack

Artillery: Catapult -> Trebuchet -> Bombard -> Mortar

Misc. units: Slaver (amph./enslave), Berserks/Jomsvikings/Crusaders/Sailors (amph.), Pirates & Privateers (HN), Knights of Military Orders, Ghazi (free), Ushkuiniks (HN), Assassins (stealth/invis.), Inquisitors (stealth/invis.), Galleass etc.

@Lord Cooper
It'll be a bit more work though, or you'll end up with jungles in the middle of Europe ;)
And thanks :D

Good lines but what is Middle Age's Mod without a pot of boiling oil unit??!!
Have it as very expensive, highly defensive (1A-10D), weak attacking and unmovable from the city please.

I saw you plans for a very elaborate pedia. Thank you! ;)

Last for this evening - Western Europe. Two things here: I don't really know what to do with Britanny, that's 3 cities that I can't make independent, so I've just gave them to France.

Secondly, the Duchy of Burgundy didn't exist at that time, while the Kingdom of Burgundy was something completely different, even geographically. On this map, it's the Kingdom of Burgundy-Arles but with Flanders added. Yes, I know Flanders became part of the Duchy in 15th century... but on all grounds, it seems better than giving it to HRE (might just as well remove Burgundy then).

this may be a stupid question. but before launch will your chnage the city culture on the maps so the boundaries are correct? or just keep them at 0 culture?

I'll post my doubts above each screenshot. If you see something bad, let me know. The first one is rather simple. There are things like location of St. Andrews being a bit off, but it's better than planting cities every 2 squares, I think.

You don't have much room to play with. St Andrews is more than just a bit off. I'd change it to be Aberdeen or even Montrose.

Inverness is a bit off but it's ok. All in all you've made a decent job of Scotland given the limited room. I thank you Sir.

replies, replies

@King Arthur
Thanks. Wasn't sure if there were any significant towns that far east in that period, which is why I used St. Andrews. Changed to Montrose for now.

@T.A Jones
Sure, if someone makes such a unit... I can't.

@Lord Cooper
Wasn't planned. It's supposed to be a build-up scenario rather than pure militaristic one, so expanding cultural borders is one of the player's tasks. Pretty much like in middle ages conquest in c3c. The cities you get at the beginning are mostly bare, usually 1 pop, 0-1 improvements and 1 defender.

@Sword_Of_Geddon
I have some fitting music, not sure if it'll be included yet, maybe as an optional download.

Balkans. I think it's accurate, save some city ownerships being shifted a couple of years here and there. EDIT: oh, and Bulgarians were under Byzantine rule at that time (until next cent.), but I'd rather have them in than make the Byzantine Empire that big.

Looks very good. I also admire how you didn't give any Moldavian or Wallachian city to Rus or Bulgars. ;) Just one comment: Varna is too much north, it's exactly in the spot where Constanta is (and was). :) Maybe put Preslav a little more south (I see there's a strange empty space between Preslav and Byzantium, I don't actually know how north that city was), and move Varna to the south, as it's right in the spot of Constanta currently. :)

Wow, this looks really great! I have been waiting for ages for a mod on that time period!
What's your ETA on the mod's release?

Looks good ED, I'll go through the cities with you when I get my computer back (which shouldn't be too long, see the mail I sent you earlier today).

@Mirc
Thanks, I moved both Preslav and Varna 1 tile south!

@captain beaver
ETA is Soon(TM). That's the safest way for me to put it ;)

More cities:
Close-up of the Middle East. Includes the newly established Seljuk state, decaying Abbasid and Fatimid caliphates, and Georgian Kingdom, which replaces Armenia. I'm not sure how good move it is, but Caucasus is a big place and needs a resident, at the same time it's too early for Cilician Armenia, since Crusades haven't started yet. I'm not sure of the borders / city ownerships especially in Persia - if someone has detailed a map from post-Seljuk invasion, help me out!

And possibly the biggest issue of all, the Asian steppes. Should Tatars be in if the scenario that starts in 1075 AD? I say yes, since it would be sad to play in Medieval Europe without the Golden Horde. That, and the fact that it was really mix of different turkic peoples like Bulgars and Kipchaks, who were present in that area in 11th century. The map below is the supposed Tatar state... so yes I'm aware Sarai didn't exist at that time, and if you think that's great injustice, say so. I am prepared for the accurate alternative: Volga Bulgaria. It was just insignificant on its own, at least for the inhabitants of Europe, so I'd rather have the Tatars early.

EDIT: and the other issue, since Khazars are gone, I would like to add the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal (later Muscovy) a bit early. You can see on the map it would take away the northeastern part of the Rus. Rus is simply too big to be one state in the scenario, and 11th century was the time at which it started to fall apart into tens of independent states anyway.
