Medieval European Mod II 2016-10-05

Halfway thru my game, playing the Irish. Unfortunately I am behind most of the other civs in Tech (playing what would be Emperor in C3C). Guess that happens when you start on an island. Fortunately I grabbed southern Scotland (English got the north, go figure), the Hebrides, Northern Spain and Portugal. The Turks were eliminated early, followed by the Khazars, Poland, Germany, Castile (which I had a hand in), France, Italy, Bulgaria, Scotland (again I had a hand) and Denmark. The Rus, Hungary, Serbia, and Portugal are doing the 1CC, and the Tatars have just gone NUTS, cutting a swath from their homeland all the way to France. Armenia and Novgorod are surprisingly powerful. Right now I have an uneasy peace w/Cordoba, but facing trouble from corsairs. I need Naval Tactics fast.

I have just a few questions. Are you planning on doing like advanced start scenarios, as in every civ has some historically placed cities and units and starts at the beginning of later eras?

If you don't mind me asking why is the capital of hungary whatever it is? IMHO think Visegrad or Pest would be appropriate because the current one is real strange and I have never heard of it but that's just me.

Bohemia is a bit lacking in its starting point, would you mind adding another resource to make prague more worthwhile as currently Bohemia sucks and gets its but kicked by everyone else.

Lastly, when general time period could we expect a cool soundtrack and those cool scenarios? Just curious as I can't wait for what you'll make.

Yes, if you look at the old preview thread (pages 6-7), you'll see this was the part of the mod (there are screenshots of complete 11th century version), I just wanted to work on it more and test it, and not delay the actual mod.

Szekesfehervar was the first capital and most important city of medieval Hungary. Buda (not Pest, which was never the capital) became the capital as late as in the 14th century.

Bohemia has to be small, cause it was small ;) Prague actually had cattle in vicinity, but I intentionally removed it, because Bohemia was most of the time the biggest kingdom in Europe, bigger than Germany etc.

I had some problems with the soundtrack, generally after filtering some questionable mp3s I was left with like 15 mins. total. I may try to go back to it, but anyway, both me and YP are in the middle of exam sessions so any work on the mod is halted for 1-2 more weeks.

Yeah I won't be able to do anything for quite a while. My exams ends in two weeks, but then I will spend the next week or so drunk, and then I'm going to Rome for one week. But then I will be back with full power! ;)

Thanks for the replies. European history isn't my specialty, so some of the stuff like about hungary I don't particularly know. As for another suggestion, have you consider renaming the the late knight to gendarme or is that too French? I think though that the gendarme were found elsewhere but because of the current wars at the time were predominantly used by the French. I just never liked all too much "late knight". ;)

Another suggestion is a bit radical but just hear me out. From my knowledge the ansar warrior should replace the moorish cavalry and the uu of the abbasids should be mamluk cavalry or something to that effect. I believe that the ansar warrior refers to the warriors who participated in all the early islamic conquests which didn't just mean the abbasids which they didn't do much of. The abbasids however used turkish slaves or mamluks in the better part of their army which led to their weakening. Secondly having the fatimids running around with moors is a little silly.

That should be the last of my suggestions. :)

We discussed this name a lot when we made it. We decided against Gendarme because it was too French. In reality it also means Man-at-Arms (as it's derived from homme d'armes ), which would create a problem since we have another unit called that.

Well it's true what you say, but I think we did this for the reason of it being easy. I don't think Ansar Warrior is the best name since it's similar with Ghazi. I want to hear ED's thoughts on the subject before I decide, because I don'tthink it's anything we ever really discussed.

Not silly at all, the Fatimids originated from northern Africa (Tunisia), so the name is quite fitting. :)

I have excellent maps, resources, and decent knowledge on the history of the middle east so if you need help on making scenarios I'd be happy to help.

Great mod. Just awsome all the way around. I used to only play Rye's but this is my new favorite. I'm playing Germany and I'm kicking ass. Rus, Bulgaria, and The Danes dogpiled me and I beat them back and even had the resources to attack the french and take paris. Rus and Bulgaria sued for peace and I'm now able to move all my forces north to take all of denmark and go fuedalism. I freakin hate the Danes in this mod. They remind me of Monty in Civ 4.
Unfortunately I've got a tec problem. With all the fighting I got myself a great leader. When I try to create an Army I get an error message. "fail to load art/unit/army middle ages/army middle ages.ini file" "game will now exit". I've got like 15 knights and would have an army ready to reak havock on those freakin beserkers. What a kick in the nuts!!! Any Ideas?:( I checked the Zip for the file and couldn't find it. I even tried using the "army" folder from conquest but no luck. Help!!!!!!

ununcle> A quick fix would be to copy the Army Middle Ages folder from the Art/Units folder of the base Civ 3 location to the units folder of MEM. For some reason the scenario can't find this folder where it presently is. Good luck, your game looks like it's coming along well.

ununcle - Do you have Complete? That might be the problem, ED made a patch for users with Complete that can be downloaded in the first post.

Oh yeah and here's something that's been worked on. Still in it's very early stages.

That's rather weird and not likely related to Civ3:Complete even: "Army Middle Ages" is not changed in the mod, it's the same entry that is in standard Civilization. You should have "Army Middle Ages" in your /Civilization III/Art/Units folder (or /Civilization 3 Complete/Art/Units or whatever the Complete path is). Is it there?

^ And they could use my map. :D And then Hungary would fit too, and even Italy (though they could delete it if they didn't want it).

But we already know, and it's normal, that people do what they like to do, not what others tell them to do. :)

Woaw, slow down a bit! No one can force me to do anything. :p

You are free to make requests, but let me finish what I started so far. ;)
