Methods of Spicing DG5 up

Still haven't had a chance to test Rik's Mod myself in Vanilla.

I hope to post a poll soon (esp. given the additions from Black_hole9's list).

I don't feel like reposting this completely, so I'll just link to it: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=1942320#post1942320

Rather than simply delaying the discovery of luxuries with a mod, I say we make a map like that (have an impartial player do it) meeting all our specifications but with luxuries only near certain start places. For example we might get the entire world's supply of furs, while the Russians get all the ivory. This would be easier for everyone, plus lead to more interesting diplomatic thingies (especially if we also go with the pacifism thing).

Epi: spreading the luxes into clusters close to starting positions is an idea I partly like. It will force us to trade a lot or it will force us to conquer. With the victory-condition set to "Diplomatic" it will make us choose the first option.

It does have disadvantages though; the map needs to be created manually, effectively removing the map-maker out of the game. It will also give us an upper hand over the AI as we know we will have 1 luxury, and only 1 luxury. That knowledge will influence city-placement and exploring.

I like the thought behind your idea, but the way you present it is not the direction I'd like it to go. I want a game which reduces the human advantage over the game, without hurting the AI. In that light, your idea doesn't (fully) do that. Your idea does have a potential, but needs a bit more tuning.

What if we add to your idea the fact that luxuries are scarce ? Let's say of each luxury there are only half the amount of the total number of civs. When a deal runs out; we have to sign immediately; or it will be sold to a different civ. In single player this is easy, but in a demogame it requires additional planning and cooperation and discussion. Especially if we don't allow a game to be stopped (unless instructed specifically) when a deal ends.

Another random idea: All luxuries on 1 continent, leaving the other (bigger in size) continent craving for them. But the other continent has only Commercial civs. Of course we'd be on the non-lux continent. This forces us to keep good relations with many (if not all) civs. Because if we don't our trade routes are in danger of being broken.

Rik's Final proposal gives me another idea... what about having several Islands or "minor" continents w/ ALL luxaries, and/or advanced resources like coal, such that No one spawns on those islands. And make it such that they are inaccessable until Astronomy.

However I will admit once again, we will know we must explore and rush for these seperate Islands (why there would be several scattered about), and the AI won't

i like the idea of having small islands containing resources/luxes and everyone starts on a big continent

Or, do an old scenario I once played (I think it was Civ2). Start on all islands, and have this huge, unsettled continent in the middle with all the resources. Only 1 problem. The AI isn't too good on settling. And besides, by the time they get navigation, we'd probably would have won by conquest or something. (Cavs and tanks to their spears and pikes). BTW, I'd like to see a game where we finish the modern era.

DG1 - We got a little over halfway through the modern era.
DG2 - We only got 1 free modern era tech on the turn that we beat the game.
DG3 - Halfway through the modern era.
DG4 - 1/3rd the way through the modern era.

We should do something like, take out 2-3 civs early on, establish 2 cores, and ride through the game, acquiring cities via culture, and/or minor wars. That's how DG1 was played BTW.

Finally, a response. :p

I don't really know how to fix the problems with the lux cluster idea. Though all in the same area, they could be relatively spread out across our starting region. Iron, horses, and bonus resources would also be all over, in stead of specialized (one thing would be to make some of the resource clusters things like saltpeter and coal, which would only appear later.) I don't think the problem with the AI would be that bad, but I'll do a test run to find out.

Well, for all these ideas we'd an impartial mapmaker, but that should be easy. These forums are huge, so finding a skilled designer with no interest in this shouldn't be a problem.

Update:

Custom Match Option added

(may end up splitting this in to at least two polls, one for overall playing stradegy, the other(s) for the remaining options, dealing with laws and modfications to game play (including map editing))

Cactus that's practically what happens already

soon after or soon before going into the Middle Ages, we switch to Monarchy or Republic (neither is a required tech to the Middle Ages)

soon after or soon before going into the Industrial Era, we switch to Democracy (unless we're warring more then our citizens like)

That would really only add one extra period of Anarchy, right at the transfer to the Modern Era.

Also to me it doesn't seem like that would add that much more "spice" to the demogame, just a little thing we're holding ourselves to which neither makes things more challenging nor changes how we approach the game that greatly.

At the beginning of the modern era we could swich to communism. I intend on lobbying for that anyway, at least in the RPG (if we aren't frozen in the middle ages). :p

uhh... communism sucks

Okay, Here comes the Small Time Modder's opionon on all this. I personally think you should use a mod, not any of that oscolatiing war or whatever. Anyway, on Mods I would use either Rhye's of Civilization, since it is relatively small and very fast loading, or The Goldflash Altered Tech Tree Mod, since I am such a horrible person and must shamelessly self promote myself everywhere. Er! What I meant to say is that it provides a number of intresting options.

Actually, there are some Issues with using the GATTAM, it isn't perfect yet; needs some tweaks, and it is only for C3C.

And ehre is another problem,, I know I'm sorta beating a dead horse but I think that the version shiould have been decided on in a vote by all the citizens, not just the leaders.

Which Brings up another Point... Why can't we have TWO or even MORE Demogames? A Vanilla version, a C3C version, a DyP Version, a GATTAM Version or what not?

I've hope I've helped and not just irritated you all.

Can you explain a bit more what the specific mods have changed ? I'm willing to test the mods so if you can PM me links to them I can have a look myself. (I see GATTAM in your sig)

The game is in Vanilla Civ 3.

Everyone his opinion, but that will not change the fact that the game will be played in Vanilla Civ 3.

There are currently (counting this one) 3 Demogames being played here. Multi-site DG in PTW. Inter-Site DG in C3C and (in due tiem) this DG5 in Vanilla.

There is a C3C Demogame? Whoops. Nevermind what I just said.
Anyway, Here is a link to Rhye's... It really is the fastest loading! and I do belive there is a Van version as well.
Rhye's of Civilization

And could you link me to the C3C Demogame? I can't find it :/

It is a Multi-Site one. The reason you probaly can't find it is that we hid the forums so that other teams can not spy on us.

Thanks. You can delete that now.

Also, there are two reasons there aren't more demogames

A.) the more the demogames the more we spread out our citizen base

B.) Petitioning Thunderfall for new forums can require ALOT of begging with no garentee.
