Mistfit’s Quick Domination Attempts

I was getting a little burned out trying 20Ks. I was inspired by this thread to try a "fast" domination. 1-2hrs is pretty close to instant gratification. :)

I thought I would try the Maya (Ag & Ind). I figured with a few workers "breaking trail", I could expand with settlers alone. I picked Tiny, Pangaea 80%, dry, warm, 5 Billion, Chieftan, Sedentary with England and Bzyantine. (My climate picks we not good, I think on high difficullties the desert=plain Ag advantge might be useful but all the Jungle and Marsh just slowed me down on Chieftan.)

My first attempt had tremendous food (5 cows and 3 fish), but was a little isolated and without water. I wasted too much time clearing marsh and jungle. Ended up with a 470BC date. I don't think I will submit it.

My next try was much better. Only three cows but much better terrian. I was a little off center but the land was more compact. I finished that one in 775BC after capturing the two Bzyantine cities. I did a Monarchy slingshot and traded it to them.

I found the combination of fast workers and UU to be very good. I switched to Monarchy and got a 6 turn anarchy. I am not sure if the extra cash for rushing settlers and temples paid back the anarchy. I did a lot more research early on than necessary. I think my next attempt will stay despotic and shut off research much earlier. I will build more UUs and and just run over one of the AI's and resettle. Also, I had a very late GA which I will try to start earlier next time.

1-2hrs, I'm playing a Huge Deity that I thought I could get a 20K win on but messed up. I'm 54 hrs into it at 950 AD and only have 37% of the territory. I have eliminated 3 civs so far and have 3 more to go to get a Domination win hopefully before 1400AD. I'm also playing the Mayans and still in Monarchy so I don't have to worry about war weariness. With the help of lots of scientists I will research Scientific Method in 4 turns.

I found what I thought was the perfect map last night. If I remember when I'm at home I'll post some shots of it.

I was looking at the maps I pulled for the attempt that I submitted and found one with a domination limit of 496 (very low for small map) with 2 cows and a river visable from the start. I had to move the settler because I was on one of the cows. when I moved I found I had 4 more cows with in ring distance three and a hut nearby. I got really excited about this game and I was able to get 2 - 4 turn settler factories up and running very quickly with a worker pump a bit later. I spent a lot of time on this game in Paint Shop planning my cities to maximize city placement and minimum overlap. I popped the early settler (which set up my second settler factory) and had 90% of my cities in place or in route by 1000BC. Unfortunately I never got the SGL so I scrapped the game. Bummer.... Had I received an Early SGL this game could have been won by 1000BC or shortly there after. :(

Oh well...
I think it's time to move on to Warlord small maps

P.S. Thanks Gator (good luck !)

Your early domination attempts are very impressive, misfit. As a matter of fact, I've only been able to match your 550 bc small victory on a Tiny world on Warlord. Really impressive.

By the way, that Small Pang map you got was beautiful. Smirk's 1450 bc domination Tiny map was absolutely perfect, but your Pang was great, too. If there is a big island off your Pang, you can get killed trying to find it. I had one basically finished at 600 bc once but lost 300 years to researching MM and sending suicide galleys to get from 64% to 66%.

I really need to get MapFinder to work. I get an error when trying to use it.

Smirk-

Two pre-1000 bc dominations. Wow. I'd love to see a turn by turn log of that. I must just be doing something fundamentally different.

Wow.. never realized how much customizing you can do with HoF games...

I probably could have transformed my last regent game in to close to HoF standards... but i had it on tiny with the full five other civs, normal aggression.. didn't use map finder..

only ended up with a score of 4000 or so, but with two civs it would have been a walk in the park considering I got two SGLs ( ToA and Art of War)

game only took me 2 hours 19 min..

Wow. I got one with pretty good map (Maya, tiny, chieftan, pangaea, norm, temp, 5bil, sedentary vs. Eng & Byz) and 3 SGLs. (I think I just burned up a lot of good luck on this one.)

If only I could get my the start back to do over with just 2 SGLs. I finished in 1100BC. I could have beaten the posted 1200BC with a better start. (I moved twice before settling and was way too slow getting my first settler to a good spot. I think I settled 2nd and 3rd city on the same turn or nearly so.)

Well, by my own rules, I need to change VC, map size, or difficulty. It may have to wait for COTM11.

You guys need to move over to the small map. I need someone to play a few games there to let me compare how good/bad/indifferent my game was that I submitted.
Maybe you should try a Huge map domination to give me something to compare to :mischief:.

I did do a huge domination.. thou it was in one rushed sitting so prolly not the best windate to compare with (280AD) :p

my game took 11 hours 32 mins
I make it 11 hours, 31 minutes and 45 seconds :p. I'm just glad you went for another empty table and let me keep my #1 slot for a little longer.

How about from 6:07AM (when mapfinder saved the start file) to 5:43PM (when i saved the 280AD file) ? :D

Actually I have not decided wether or not to try to get:

1) all of the difficulty levels on the same map size (octathlon)

or

2) All of the Map sizes on the same difficulty level (Pentathlon)
You don't need to keep the difficulty the same when changing the map size, or the map size the same when changing difficulty. There's nothing stopping you from doing something like:
Chieftain Tiny
Warlord Small
Deity Standard
Regent Large
Sid Huge

To get the Pentathlon and be just 1 game away from a regular Octathlete in just 5 games! You could even win with a different victory condition for each of those 5 games.

1100bc is a fantastic finish!

I've yet to break 600 bc on any level, despite a couple of SGL's. 3 SGL's is almost absurd! You need no more than 2 (Pyramids, ToA).

I think getting an early second settler is key as well.

I've got a pretty good game going right now, except for the Pang shape and size.

Yes but I think it would be cool to have all of the #1 spots for Domination on Small maps or al of the #1 spots for Chieftan from Tiny to Huge. But that is just my twisted mind. :D

I'm trying to do something similar so I guess us twisted minds think alike :crazyeye:

Having 2 entries on each level for large maps & 100K wins. Chieftain is done (#1 & #3) and I'll be posting my first Warlord tonight (should be #1).
