Are you a mumbler? Is proper articulation more of an enemy than a friend? Do you strain to get your verbals out in a clean manner? When you speak, do people listen, or do they say, "What's that, you poor thing?"

My most humble CFCers, speak on this matter...if you can. What techniques have you used to help yourself?

I'm doubly cursed in that I both mumble and talk really fast, but not to the point where people can't understand me. Usually it's only people with bad hearing or people who aren't really paying attention that can't understand me. They will still occasionally mention that I'm mumbling or talking too fast though . . .

Yep... I get accused of mumbling. I blame the listener :mischief: . My daughter is worse but she is just lazy speaking. She has had to sharpen up during college and especially graduate school.

I sometimes mumble on the phone! Phones freak me out a bit, so if it's someone I've never spoken to, then yeah, I get nervous and mumble. People who I've gained familiarity with though don't have the same issue. I guess for me I just try to realize, as negative as it is, that mumbling makes things worse. If I'm already struggling to communicate with someone, why would I make my verbal communication even harder to digest?

I have BEGUN TO SPEAK LOUDER AND CLEARER BECAUSE PEOPLE KEPT SAYING THAT THEY CAN'T HEAR ME AND THAT I MUMBLE.

So now I mumble louder and I try to open my mouth in slightly exaggerated manners when I do so. People can understand me a lot better, so I guess there you go society, I hope you're happy now.

Maybe I should do that.

When I was younger, it was mainly my father who kept pointing out I was a mumbler. Most people though just ask me "wait what was that?" and I get the hint.

mumbling is frequently a symptom that you're in your own head and aren't making the effort to be present with the people you are with

I was mainly mumbling a lot because I used to be a very quiet kid.. and had social anxiety issues. So I didn't speak up. My tongue was also connected to the.. bottom of my mouth, a bit too much. I've since had that connection cut. Eliminating my social anxiety and becoming less shy all helped in learning how to "speak properly".
