Here she is. Julia Gillard, Australian PM.

So when will we see the end of misogyny?

Will we ever see the end of misogyny?

Do you think this is an important issue?

The entire video is worth watching, but it is better towards the end from about 10:00.

And this is the underlying controversy:

But my interest is the misogyny angle.

edit: Notice how often she says "I am offended by...". Is she right to be offended? Has she the right to be offended?

Is the leader of the opposition simply exercising his freedom of speech in calling the PM of Australia a " witch", etc?

Thoughts:

1. Gillard's accent is amazing.

2. I really like the setup of Westminster system parliaments. Government and opposition facing each other directly, with not much space separating them, and a parliamentary code of conduct that makes it possible to interrupt and comment the current speaker as you like. We could use more of that.

3. The speech was great, and from what I know about the Liberal Party (admittedly not much), well deserved.

That was a fine speech.

We will fight them in the Bedrooms. We will fight them in the Kitchens. We will fight them in the showers, the restrooms, the haircare salons. We will never surrender!

No Churchill...

Misogony lives on in the sammich meme.

It's unlikely misogyny will ever go away. And I don't recall anyone claiming it had.

Q: When will Racism go away? When will Anti-Semitism go away? When will discrimination go away?

A: Once we stop being humans.

There are some samples here

Eh, all that article had is using some vulger terms for genitals and some insults towards individual women, not women in general. Its vulgar and insulting, but it is not sexist.

Calling a women the "c" word is not sexist just like calling a dude the "d" word isn't either. Its just a gender specific general nsult.

I have no doubt this dude is your garden variety frat boy douche, but if the examples given in the article is all they are going on every group of young men and women I have ever encountered are just as guilty as he is.

That was without a doubt the most hypocritical speech ever given. It was during a debate that the opposition started to remove the speaker of th house for his many text sent to his staff about how he denigrates women and disparages their sexual organ. The fact that the PM then went on to keep a disgraced man who had insulted women to keep his job, and his perks, rather than lose them. It was a shameful display of rhetoric I have ever seen.

There's no easy way to say this guys: Australian accents are just *cringe*

I don't agree. This isn't how the English language works, IMO.

Calling a bloke the "c" word is extremely frequent. And is a register above (or below depending on your pov) calling a man the "d" word. The gender specific ~equivalent of the "d" word is the "b" word. (This is bizarre. I'd be just as happy typing the actual words. To me they really are just words. Though the intent behind them is what concerns us here.)

Calling a woman the "c" word is extremely unusual and connotes the sexist mindset. Only one step below referring to a woman as "it". A practice quite common in certain circles intra-males. Indicating the complete objectivification of women.

Anyway, on another tack, notice how often she says "I am offended by...". Is she right to be offended? Has she the right to be offended?

Is the leader of the opposition simply exercising his freedom of speech in calling the PM of Australia a " witch", etc?

They're not as bad as South African accents, those are cringe worthy.

Well, you have a point.

It pales into insignificance besides the hypocrisy of the leader of the opposition, though doesn't it?

But my point is the misogny itself, rather than the intricacies of Australian political manoeuvrings - which frankly I don't understand.

Is she right to be offended. Has he, as the respected leader of the opposition, the right to be so openly misogynist?
