Monarchist Cookbook Game II

hey guys, writing from my holiday here. a couple of thoughts:

-Vale's play was well above monarch level, although i don't think that is a bad thing. :) I thought my round went really well, but when I saw Vale's I was like "wow" :D

-Settling the GS was 100% the right move imo. We are going to be alone on our continent and need to develop our economy. The GS will give us a good deal of beakers over the course of the game. 2nd GS can go for an academy and subsequent ones can be settled. Eventually Oxford will go in Athens (cheap libraries + universities ftw!) and be a superb science city (I am in favour of cottaging Athens).

-An elephant-catapult-phalanx war with Monty should be the next order of business (oh, and by the way, rushing Peter was 100% the right move as well. Copper in capital + soft, close neighbour??? Yes please!). Even if the economy goes in the toilet, having the island to ourselves (with GW to help with barbs, sick!!!) is HUGE and our economy will eventually recover to be the strongest in the world, hands down.

-I'm thinking an early domination win is in order and we can showcase the warmongering power of the SE along the way. We shouldn't need to tech past rifling in this game at all, and could potentially close it out earlier than that if we get a large enough medieval army (the drafting power combined with rifles is just hard to match though!!!).

Anyways, those are my thoughts. If we don't go with Vale's save for whatever reason (i.e., it is TOO good) then I would vote for my save because I think rushing Peter is the right decision and I can still get the pyramids. I would be opposed to any save that is trying to settle peacefully while leaving Peter alive.

@ all:

Just a reminder to let you guys know I'm still around (just a lil quiet is all) ...

Things weren't quite as peachy keen as predicted during this round and there were some definite speed bumps. As expected I had lots of micromanagement leaks and the war with Monty took a long time.

Started the round with some micromanagement fixes from last round. Most cities emphasized food + commerce+typically running 2 scientists as it was obvious that a war with Monty would be scary in terms of economy. Started moving troops towards the border which I established with a Settler I whipped out of Athens a turn after the round started. Switched to Representation after the settler was on his way. Micromanaged here to avoid supply costs while they got to the front. Every penny was important at this point.

I also opened borders with Monty in here to scout out his lands. One of his cities had literally 4 or 5 coastal tiles in it and it wasn't coastal. That was a razer but I planned to keep everything else.

After I had few catapults ready to go at the front, I declared war in 470 BC and in 455 BC I took Tlatleco. This was a nice one as it picked up some mined gems for me when it came out of revolt. That helped counter some of the WW that soon started to hurt.

I moved on to Texcoco (while waiting for my other catapults to work their way into the area for Tenochtitlan(I'm sure I'm butchering these spellings, sorry)). I took that in 365BC and moved on to lay siege to Tenochtitlan. These first two cities I let some suicide chariots take the brunt of the damage. I didn't have enough catapults at the moment where I was willing to risk losing them so they were there exclusively to drop the culture.

Finally, I took Tenochtitlan in 230 BC (I did suicide a cat or 2 here since he had many defenders. I then signed a 10 turn peace treaty with Montezuma for 50 gold. I needed a few turns to heal anyway and war weariness was starting to make my core cities have problems so I was fine with not just doing a cease fire.

In 65 BC, peace time was over and I redeclared and headed down towards his new capital which was that god forsaken 1 off the coast in two directions city (Teothuican). I razed it in 20BC. In 70AD I took Xochikako and took a cease fire while healing to let some cities have some turns with happiness.

In 145AD I declared for the last time and shortly thereafter took Tlaxcala in 175AD. One city remained. Calixtahuaca. I took it in 250AD and that was that. I also captured a barb city on his half of the continent later to give my military something to do (had some terrible luck with that city losing 3 80+% fights before I had to send in a CRIII phalanx who wouldn't even gain XP off the fight to finish it. But the good news about that is that my military upkeep is now 0. Thats crazy by the way because there were times in the early war where I was literally scarmbling for every penny because of the overwhelming upkeep. But I digress.

I settled a few cities closish to the capital. One picking up the silver and pigs, one which I suppose will be a Maoi city and one which was a blue circle that led me astray. Well really I just wasn't paying attention and built an extra settler and didn't have any place scouted for him to go so I went to a blue circle near the capital. There better be oil or something in that cross because all that is in there now is a plains hill sheep...bleh.

After I picked up Optics, I whipped 2 caravels in two of my coastal cities on the east side immediately and sent them out. The only coastal city I had on the west that was close to ready for a whip took a few turns to have the necessary hammers. I just realized I had a better coastal city on the east side to whip out of and I screwed that up and could have had contact a little earlier.

I met Louis first. He did not have his ABCs yet so he was useless to me at the moment.

Next I met Qin. He had Alphabet and I made some trade to pick up that and Mysticism and Archery and some cash. I'm not caring so much about WFYABTA.

I also traded on later turns (or bought I can't remember) the other religious techs but I haven't traded for Monarchy yet. I want it eventually of course but it isn't urgent just yet.

I also met Pacal and Wang Kong. So thats all of them.
Pacal Is Confucian.
Wang Kon and Qin are Hindu.
Louis is Jewish.
I am no state religion still. Actually with the stupid UB and representation and a few happiness resources I was fine for happiness when not getting killed by WW. Health is starting to become a problem but with astronomy I expect to be able to solve that.

Ahh so wonders that happened this round.
He built the Oracle to take Theology and built the AP as well, both in Paris. He also has the Jewish shrine.

Pacal has Stonehenge and the Great Library in Mutal. He also has the confucian shrine.

Qin has Great Lighthouse in Beijing.

Wang Kon has the ToA somewhere. It isn't a top five city.

We have the Pyramids and Great Wall obviously. But we also have the Hanging Gardens in Athens and MoM is a 4 pop whip away in Athens. Given that Athens is currently unhealthy thats not the worst thing in the world.
My tech path for the round was:
Construction
Currency
CoL
Civil Service (this was a lifesaver as I cottaged up Athens and it saved me from striking)
Iron Working
Sailing
Compass
Metal Casting
Machinery
Optics
Calendar
Astronomy - partial
Traded for all the religious path techs up until Monarchy.

Lets see. We want pictures.

Athens has a few settled great people:
Athens700.jpg

Oh yeah and looking at that picture reminds me, sometime late in the round (forget exactly when but it was around the time I was building MoM, gold popped up in one of my hills in the Capital.

I also forgot to mention (but it is apparent from the screenshot) that I completed the classic literature quest this round. Yes the reward is pretty lame since we didn't have the GL, but I didn't want to delay building libraries or sidetrack down the Aesthetics path. +2 beakers in our future oxford city isn't the worst thing in the world.

Tenochtitlan has the Forbidden Palace:
Tenochtitlan700.jpg

Mycenae I suppose can be the future National Park city. I've got a worker chain irrigiating up to here but he can be sent off on other tasks. I would suggest getting the NE built here while waiting for the NP to be available.
mycenae700.jpg

There are alot of cities so no screens for all of them and they all start to bleed together:
toomanycities.jpg

Oh yeah, one of those non-descript cities has a settled instructor in it. Monty got a GG when I captured his second to last city so it is settled in that pigs+iron+peaks city at the southern end of the continent. Not optimal placement obviously but it is coastal so it can produce level 2 naval units with a drydock now.

I really need more workers. Like alot more workers. Like probably every city in the southern hemisphere needs to whip one out as soon as possible. Astronomy is due in 14 turns and I believe that the trade routes from that will help a ton with our economy.

One last thing. I also got the Horse Whisperer quest. We will fail it in 14 turns unless we complete it by then. However, Qin will trade Horseback Riding and it wouldn't be hard to whip out 7 stables from this position before astronomy from this position. +1 food in stables cities...worth it? Of course we could also self research it before astronomy. Doesn't have to be a trade.

Random statistics:
As a whole I have now killed:
5? Workers...this is clearly wrong and I'm not sure whats going on. I've got 11 workers right now and I have only built 3 myself. That = 8 workers killed stupid game.
2 Warriors...these were Barbarians
10 Jaguars...these were not
10 Axemen...all Monty
1 Spearman...Monty
23 Archers...Mix of Barbarian, Monty and Peter.

I have lost as a result:
1 Scout...Oh noes
9 Phalanxes
6 Chariots
5 Catapults

ROUND 1 ENDS!!!

Well, because of the majority votes already cast, there's not much surprise to this post, so I'll just get on with it.

vale submitted the best Round 1, so we will be playing from his "best ball" save: (@vale: feel free to remove the )

vale - MC2 BC-1000.CivBeyondSwordSave

Here is vale's Round 1 Report (@ vale: feel free to remove the SPOILER tags at your leisure.)

Truth be told, it wasn't easy for me to choose which save I liked most. (Not that it would've mattered since the majority vote had long since gone to vale's save.)

Every submission except my own () was very strong, so kudos to everyone who submitted this Round. It was exciting seeing so much activity this Game; I look forward to seeing what Round 2 holds for us. :goodjob:

Round 2 will last from 1000 BC - 700 AD (100 Turns). Please play Round 2 and submit your Report before Tuesday, June 10, 2008. As with every Round, remember to have fun ...

... and with that, ROUND 2 BEGINS!!!

Part 2: Putting it in spoilers just to save space:

Spoiler :
- Pyramids finished 1 turn after Vale's save

- 700 BC - 2 turns left on mysticism tech - going for theology. Running rep. Going for a few cottages to fix economy up a bit...also going to settle south to block monty

- 650 BC - despite being in the red already settled 1 N of fish near monty's border. Power city = 2x gems + fish + pig. No IW yet but we can't let monty get this stuff. Been using a chariot to scout monty out.

- 500 BC Monty sends us Buddhism. Convert.

- 395 BC Thanks to avoiding currency too long we bottom out at 0 gold. Running commerce tiles keeps us at exactly 0 gpt . At least it's over 70 BPT

- 260 BC Founded christianity.

- 185 BC We switch to OR

- 95 BC Currency is a huge boost for us, allowing us to bump the slider up to 20 %. This is good for 106 BPT. Vale's save was indeed sick.

- 65 BC Athens completes Temple of Artemis

- 50 BC We grab ironworking to work those gems. Moscow has iron, and there's another site near the fish west of Athens.

- 25 AD Code of laws. Going CS to paper towards liberalism

- 250 AD Apostolic Palace completed in Christianity

- 310 AD Back to Buddhism

-340 AD We're running bureaucracy, 209 BPT

- 355 AD Paper completed, 16 turns on Education

- 445 AD Settled city to north to grab 2 silvers and a pig resource

- 565 AD Education tech acquired

- 670 AD We accidentally found taoism

- 700 AD End of segment

Summary:

We founded 2 strong cities, so we're up to 7 with room for more. Civics are Rep, Bureaucracy, Slavery, Decentralization, Organized Religion. We have not battled Montezuma, though we have 80 % of his power. We are in his religion, and we have the AP in our own religion. Due to the accidental founding of taoism, we can get up to +3 :) as needed from temples.

We have 8 turns left on liberalism, and the intent is to get it to 1 turn, and then delay it for a power tech. Optics is a priority after we have 1 turn on lib.

We are getting 263 BPT at 50% science losing 4 GPT. Despite running rep we have a capitol @ 15 pop with no anger and more room to grow if we build 2 temples.

Vale, I didnt download your save initially, I just didnt see a need to examine them too closely, but now that I opened it and started playing my round, I have to say you play a VERY impressive game. Neat, nicely balanced, just right on the whip-anger, good unit count to keep Monty thinking twice (he may be a nutjob, but even he uses the power ratings sometimes, heh). Killer man, just killer. Still tons of forests and reasonable populations, and all those units, masterful hammer usage bro, very solid indeed.

I do have one question. Doesnt the fog bother you? Dont you want to get a few scouts out there? I never understood the whole "barely anything explored" concept, maybe you can give me an idea of it. Heck, even though I didnt have any seafood, I made a workboat in my game JUST to explore (knowing, of course, that eventually I could use it to jump-start a coastal city somewhere). But your map is so neat, you have the wall, and about 3 tiles out surrounding the wall, and thats it, heh.

Exploring units cost hammers and maintenance... sometimes it is just not worth it and sometimes you simply can't put in queue a exploring unit without compromising something more important ( and sometimes our scouts end in the belly of a panther  )

Pretty much what was going on. I get tunnel vision when I have a plan and tend to execute it to the exclusion of others.

I should have had those chariots out scouting after the GW was in during the first round. But I was so focused on the Pyramids that I really didn't even think about it.

Here is my Round 2 report. Nothing spectacular, but vale's save was so strong a lot of this was pretty natural.

Two parts because of length, Part 1, 1000 BC to 10 AD:

Spoiler part 1 :

The first thing I did was start moving my army toward Monty, and send a couple units to explore the tundra. I am sure Peter got most of the huts up there, but I want to see what will be worth settling. I couldnt remember much about my own explorations, which is kind of a good thing about the length of the turns. I played a couple games in between, and while I had a "general" knowledge (I knew there was silver there, etc) I didnt have any specific details that stood out in my mind.

Turn 120/750 (1000 BC) [06-Jun-2008 18:40:33]
Athens grows to size 6
St. Petersburg finishes: The Pyramids

Turn 121/750 (975 BC) [06-Jun-2008 18:43:17]
St. Petersburg begins: Settler (15 turns)
Whip anger has decreased in Athens

Mids are in, and I start a settler in St Pete, and revolt to Rep right away. As it is, the slider is at 0, and scientists are giving us a decent tech rate. Rep will double it. Gold was a problem the entire set for me, I had to be VERY careful about it, constantly swapping tiles for 1 or 2 more commerce. But I want to get to the Gems ASAP.

Civics Change: MC2 Bleys Rd 2(Greece) from 'Despotism' to 'Representation'

Turn 122/750 (950 BC) [06-Jun-2008 18:44:34]

Turn 123/750 (925 BC) [06-Jun-2008 18:45:03]

The whip was applied in Athens
Athens finishes: Phalanx

Whipped into another Settler in Athens. There are a couple cities I want to settle, but we are in no shape to REX, financially. Here is a tentative dotmap of the area between us and Monty. War should help our economy, but those gems are also going to help.

Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg

Turn 124/750 (900 BC) [06-Jun-2008 18:49:50]

Turn 128/750 (800 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:09:52]
Tech learned: Construction
Moscow grows to size 3

Construction comes in, and I go right for IW. Not for Swords, but for the ability to mine those gems.

Turn 129/750 (775 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:12:57]
Research begun: Iron Working (11 Turns)
A Mine was built near St. Petersburg

Sparta finishes: Phalanx

Turn 132/750 (700 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:19:12]
Sparta begins: Catapult (15 turns)
A Mine was built near Corinth

I build units as I can, especially Cats. I am trying not to whip too much, I need the populations now that the happy caps are up from Rep. All of our teching is coming from specialists, but its a very solid rate.

The whip was applied in Moscow
Athens grows to size 6
Moscow finishes: Library
Corinth grows to size 2

St. Petersburg begins: Catapult (19 turns)
Corinth begins: Barracks (38 turns)
Tech learned: Iron Working

IW is done, we knew we had Iron in Moscow. Moscow will be my future HE city. I decide to go for Currency next, in a further effort to help my economy, I am at a negative with the slider at 0%.

I also send workers to clear the jungle so I can get those gems online FAST when the border pops.

Turn 136/750 (600 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:30:51]

Turn 138/750 (550 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:32:16]
Whip anger has decreased in Athens
St. Petersburg grows to size 6
Confucianism founded in a distant land

Confu FIADL, but I dont mind. I will be Buddhist soon enough, since Monty has a Holy City. No sense waiting for him to build the shrine though. Its doubtful he will get a Prophet early since he didnt build any of the early wonders.

Turn 139/750 (525 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:33:04]

Turn 140/750 (500 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:39:59]

More cats in queue, work boat reaches the fish by the Gem City. This is going to be a strong city. We need it, I have 1 gold, and 0% slider, and breaking even. Ugh, I am PRAYING we dont get a bad event.

Currency is in, thank goodness. It helps some. I start CoL, since Courthouses are going to be VERY important if we want to keep any of Montys cities.

Turn 145/750 (425 BC) [06-Jun-2008 19:47:09]
Research begun: Code of Laws (8 Turns)

A bit of selective whipping here and there to get Cats done, I have also been chopping. We are close to ready to storm Monty, and we get word from that we are Number 1 in Power.

Turn 214/750 (610 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:40:36]
A Cottage was built near Tenochtitlan
Buddhism has spread: Athens
Whip anger has decreased in St. Petersburg
Whip anger has decreased in Moscow
The whip was applied in Argos
The whip was applied in Tenochtitlan
Sparta finishes: Stable
Corinth grows to size 5
Argos grows to size 3
Argos finishes: Courthouse
Tenochtitlan finishes: Forge

Turn 215/750 (625 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:45:18]
Sparta begins: Horse Archer (8 turns)
Argos begins: Forge (45 turns)
Tenochtitlan begins: Market (19 turns)
Tech learned: Paper
Whip anger has decreased in Argos
Tech learned: Calendar
Athens grows to size 10
Moscow grows to size 8
Thebes grows to size 9
Jute grows to size 3

Paper in, Calendar in, I start Med, since I want a Monastery in Athens at least for the science.

Turn 216/750 (640 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:46:45]
Research begun: Meditation (1 Turns)
Archer promoted: City Garrison I
Tenochtitlan begins: Monument (4 turns)
Tech learned: Meditation
Tlatelolco grows to size 8
Knossos finishes: Granary
A Hamlet was built near Knossos
Mycenae's borders expand
Taoism founded in a distant land

Med in, I take Priest now. I want to get to Lib. Taoism is FIADL, but thats ok. I should still be in great shape to get Lib pretty quickly.

Turn 217/750 (655 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:48:00]
Research begun: Priesthood (1 Turns)
Knossos begins: Courthouse (26 turns)
Tech learned: Priesthood
St. Petersburg grows to size 8
Argos grows to size 4

After Priest, I decide to go Drama. I love Theaters and the Globe is one of my fav Nat Wonders. I should have went more military for Monty, but the set is getting close to the end, and I didnt want to leave anyone with half-a-war. He is still pretty weak, divided, and culture from Theaters will really hurt his cities near mine.

Turn 218/750 (670 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:49:04]
Research begun: Drama (4 Turns)
A Pasture was built near Jute
A Mine was built near Tenochtitlan
Whip anger has decreased in Tlatelolco
Moscow's borders expand
Corinth finishes: Galley

I build this Galley to circle the continent once at war with Monty, and go after his seafood, eventually ending on the other side so I can settle that little tiny island with a few seafood by it, maybe.

Turn 219/750 (685 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:53:48]
Corinth begins: Stable (13 turns)
A Cottage was built near Jute
Whip anger has decreased in Corinth
Whip anger has decreased in Thebes
Thebes finishes: Archer
Tenochtitlan grows to size 6
Tenochtitlan finishes: Monument
Jute grows to size 4
Jute finishes: Library

Turn 220/750 (700 AD) [06-Jun-2008 23:55:50]
Thebes begins: Forge (30 turns)
Jute begins: Barracks (25 turns)
Archer promoted: City Garrison I
Phalanx 13 of Sparta (Phalanx) promoted: City Raider I

And thats the end of the set. Nothing special, in fact, kind of weak. Monty is still alive, I havent really done anything toward Optics and finding the other AIs. I would be headed there next though, with the intention of getting the Circumvent bonus since it looks like we arent in range of anyone. Here are some of my cities and F screens, in a spoiler in a spoiler, heh:

I already finished my turnset, but I'm in a hurry to play a SG turnset ( the Euro cup is eating a lot of time as well... still recovering from yesterday match ;) ), so I'll let the save here and do the report later.

Okay, I probably won't be able to play this turn, since I have had some personal issues to deal with in the weekend and I have an exam @ Wednesday. Count me in next round though :)

Heh, I've been itching to play this round, but my home computer is having issues and I've had some unexpected RL stuff crop up. Sorry about that, I'll try to get back in the swing when I can.

I regret not seeing a heavy dose of pacificism to help with the gp generation, but with the cash issues and wanting to raise an army against monty, I understand. It's just with pyramids and a philosophical leader pacificism is so yummy.

Things look good for us though. We should have a monster Oxford city there.

Wow ... when it rains, it pours ... I can't play this Round, either!

We were house hunting all weekend, and now the work week has started back up.

If I can squeeze in the time, I'll try to play tonight, so at best my Report'll be a lil' late.

Just wanted to post a quick thanks for the Monarch series... I tend to play at this level, and although I have won only a couple Emperor games, I'm feeling ready to bump it back up. Not sure if it's a faux pas to lurk-post in the middle of a game, but thanks anyway! :)

You're welcome. In fact, it'd be nice if you want to join along as a shadower, especially this round since we need saves .

Just play the rounds you want to, post a report and a save (Autolog from BUG-mod is great for reports), in spoilers, and it'll be considered when determining the best ball. Feel free to air any comments on saves/decisions made by anybody, as long as you are polite. Questions are in order - anyone can make mistakes, and should not be offended if you draw their attention to them - in a polite manner, ofcourse. We play this series to get better, after all.
