Monarchist Cookbook Game II

Here's my effort:

Spoiler :

When I started the game, it didn't like my mods for some reason. Instead of taking the time to figure out the problem, I just started playing without them. I hope that's okay.

Turn by turn:
Spoiler :

I started off the round by whipping out some buildings in Russia. I also whipped out the MoM.

I discovered a cache of secrets. I spent the money for the 50% chance of doubling the bonus, succeeded, and picked up 670 bulbs for Engineering.
Civ4ScreenShot0000.JPG

745AD: Collosus BIAFL.

775 AD: I have proven that the world is round.

870 AD: Pacal built the SoZ in Mutal.
870 AD: Discovered Silver near Moscow.

880 AD: Astronomy came in. I'm running at 30% slider for 299 beakers. Failed the Horse Whisperer quest.
Opened some overseas trades.

890 AD: Judaism and Confucionism spread to us.

910 AD: Epheseus founded north of Moscow.

930 AD: Engineering completed. I go for Philosophy with the idea of taking Pacifism, but I chicken out and decline to choose a state religion. I should have though, in hind sight.

940 AD: France offers 210 gold for Currency. He's only three turns away, so I take it.
A Great Scientist pops.

960 AD: France demands back the money they just paid us. He's currently teching Feudalism at 23 turns, so I send him off broke. Currency must not have given him the money he needs.

Taking a look at France's armies, they have quite a lot of swords and axes and a fair number of galleys.

I start Notre Dame in Athens.

980 AD: Philosophy is in. I go for Theology and Divine Right for Versailles. Taoism founded in Corinth.
New city founded southwest of Moscow.

1000 AD: Theology is in. Hinduism spreads to us.
I use the last GS to bulb Paper. Maybe not the best choice.
New city founded South of Athens.

1010 AD: I whip out a bunch of buildings. Forges, lighthouses, observatories, etc. I was contemplating a war machine soon, but it never happened.

1050 AD: Louis DoW on Pacal.
I start building settlers to send to the land south of France. I'll try and colonize it, and will probably liberate them. I'll use this as a base of attack on France.

1060 AD: France captures Chichen Itza (the city, not the wonder). This is deep into Pacal's territory. I like it. Let's just hope france can't keep it up.

1090 AD: Divine Right completed. I go for Printing Press. Islam founded.
I don't know what to do about Verseilles. I consider building it near Athens, with an eye to moving our capitol to the New World. I start it in Moscow, unhappy about this choice. It is my second best producer, but still will take 40 turns, even after giving all the scientists pick axes.

1100 AD: Notre Dame completed in Athens.

1180 AD: Louis adopts Vassalage.

1190 AD: Printing Press is in. Slider at 40%, with -11 GPT, making 360 beakers.
Pacal asks me to DoW on France, but I decline. Tempting.
I change my mind about Verseilles. It's taking forever, so I think I'll just let someone else build it. I gift Divine Right to France and hope he builds it. It was a waste to research it.

Etritia founded south of France near the beaver.

1210 AD: Parthenon completed in Beijing. Nice city :)

1220 AD: Granted independance to our colonies, placing Justinian I on their throne. Gifted them iron and horses.
Civ4ScreenShot0005.JPG

1230 AD: Justinian is already coming in handy. He picked up Aesthetics somewhere and gifted it to us.

1255 AD: Justinian converts to Christianity. I start the Moai Statues west of Athens. Not sure about this choice, but it's fine I guess.

1265 AD: Captured barbarian city north of Russia. Burn it.

1270 AD: Captured barbarian city south of France. Gifted to Justinian.

1275 AD: Nationalism in. I go for Literature.

1280 AD: Literature in. I go for Guilds.

1285 AD: Mycenae (northern-most city). starts building HE with chops.
Great Engineer pops.

1295 AD: Use the GE to rush Versailles in Moscow. This isn't the most effective use, but oh well.

1300 AD: Guilds in. I start Banking.
Slider is 40% at 436 beakers with +6 gold.

Overview:
Spoiler :

Okay, so not a terribly strong turn. I could have done better on several choices.

Tech route was: Astronomy, Engineering, Philosophy, Theology, Paper (bulb), Divine Right, Printing Press, Feudalism, Nationalism, Literature, Guilds.

Pros:
Slider is running in the green at 40%, producing 436 BPT.
Notre Dame and Verseilles (and MoM, obviously).
Easy point of entry for combat in the new world.
Picked up a few extra resources (beaver and deer) as tribute from our vassal.
Basic attack force awaiting orders in the new world.
Basic navy: 5 or 6 Galleons.

Cons:
Liberalism is still a ways off. I didn't bother pursuing it, because I'm sure will still take it first.
I played a few things inefficiently. For example, Verseilles and my micromanagement.
I should have done more with my civics.
No golden ages this turn.
I forgot about the Taj Mahal! There's still time I think (maybe).

!@#%$^$&!@^#%$&*@(#*$!

My computer crapped out on me again. I was playing some Civ when my computer cut out as if the power in the house went out. Except the power in the house didn't go out. I try to turn on my computer and get nothing except the little green power light indicating power is still happening at least to some extent. I've tried a few different things with no success.

I am out of action until I get this sorted out and don't know how long it will take. I may have to take it in to a shop this week if I can't figure it out.

I have had some similar problems, and it turned out to be the wire that runs from the button to the motherboard. Check that wire out, it may be lose or shorted out. My MB has a little plastic thing that covers my processor and fan, and has its own exhaust fan out the back. That had come lose and pulled the wire to the start butting out just a tad, which caused my computer to turn on and off, and not even start sometimes.

Hope that helps.

Played my round, didnt do baddly, but I may be overextended a bit, heh, as usual. Doing the report tomorrow, too busy playing and watching golf and football, heh. Dont be tellin me any scores either rolo! I havent watched todays matches yet! Yesterdays were brilliant though, man the Dutch look good!

Hey, rolo, I have a cool idea for some RPCs, Unrestricted Combos of the Euro 2008 teams! Willem the Roman, Louis of Greece, Jaoa of Russia, Isabella of Germany, LOL. Might be fun.

Mkay, I got my BUG mod back on (looks like I just needed to patch the thing, d'oh! :wallbash:), including Autolog. So I will be playing my round shortly.

EDIT 1: Played my round. Now, Photobucket is troubly laggy. I will post a report shortly.

EDIT 2: Here we go:

Spoiler Round 3 Report: 700-1200 :

Okay. Start, I look around at our magnificent greek empire. Good job by Vale first two rounds! Anyway, I decide to take a look at the financial situation.

-2 gpt on 0% slider. Ugh. I look around in some cities, and end up swapping a citizen from northtundracity from forest to silver mine (just finished). Now we have a positive gpt @ 0%. With this as my "tee-off", I decide to dedicate this round to recovering from the rapid expansion in the first two rounds. Cottages, scientist, forges, courthouses and workers are toppriority.

Anyway, here we go. First turn:

Civ4ScreenShot0247.jpg

I don't plan on teching this anytime soon, or even myself, but whatever. It reduces the cost of buying it off the AI.

A couple of turns laters, Wang Kon offers me this very fair trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0249.jpg

Since I have plenty of wine and have decided I want to befriend Wang (more on this later), I accept. I need to get as many :) as possible. Plus surplus wine makes great trading fodder.

... And since Louis hates me, I accept when Wang comes telling me to stop trading with the French:

Civ4ScreenShot0250.jpg

I am working on circumnavigating with the initial three caravels from save, and I notice Mutal:

Civ4ScreenShot0251.jpg

Great Library and Stonehenge... Hmm, I might have to be bit careful about Pacal. He seems weak, but he is a strong techer, and he has one of the better wonders in the game. Ah, well.

Okay. Time for some decisions: Who to befriend? As I said earlier, Wang was a sure choice (+4 from trade relations help a lot). Considering another important issue, favourite civics, I make my choice:

Civ4ScreenShot0252.jpg

Pacal and Louis love HR, which I do not intend to adopt (We have a huge amount of :) from resources, and our :science: is based purely on scientist specialists atm, so Representation is strong.

Qin Shi Huang has Bureaucracy, which we have. He does not have it himself (lacks the tech), but we will get diplo points with him as soon as he gets there.

And finally, Wang has Caste System as his favourite. Awesome! I am a huge fan of this civic, mainly because I detest slavery and I don't exactly excel in using it either. So I decide to befriend QSH and Wang.

Okay. I had foreseen this, but still. Look at our income when Astro rolls in:
Civ4ScreenShot0253.jpg

 +77!? That's great! I up the slider to 20% and go for Paper. I am thinking Education early for some universities (and OX in Athens), and to grab Lib.

Okay, after having had Astro in a couple of turns, I realize I can now trade overseas concerning gold and resources as well. So I make this trade with Wang:
Civ4ScreenShot0254.jpg

I sell him an inferior food resource and two solid happiness resources for a solid happiness resource, a solid health resource, and a happy/healthy spice. Very nice.

Next trade is with QSH (I have cancelled all trade with Louis, he doesn't want to talk, and Pacal has no gold and does not want to trade resources):

Civ4ScreenShot0255.jpg

Since he's going to be our pal, he can get Iron for his UU. Besides, he cant reach us. None of them have optics.

I pop the next Great Person, a scientist. I decide to launch a GA (which boosts our economy to the extent that I can run 40% slider). With that, I switch to Caste System:

Civ4ScreenShot0256.jpg

I did not adopt a religion, as that would offend someone (I did not have Hinduism, I think). And look, immidiately working plusses witth Wang:

Civ4ScreenShot0257.jpg

On a side note, I decide to go Printing Press for a huge commerce boost (since I am cottaging like a madman at home while retaining scientists in most cities. We are looking at a hybrid economy here, I believe).

Louis gets a rare anti-Monarchy event, which I have no idea what effect has:
Civ4ScreenShot0259.jpg

Oookay, PP rolls around, I am still in GA (good idea about building MoM at start, Vale, I got it), and dicing out 500 beakers a turn on 40% with a decent gpt:

Civ4ScreenShot0260.jpg

I trade something silly (CivilService?) for Feudalism from Wang:

Civ4ScreenShot0261.jpg

Now, if it wasn't for the events this turn, this screenie would be extremely boring:

Civ4ScreenShot0262.jpg

Great! Pacal and Louis, the two non-pleased AIs, are warring. Pacal is much weaker than Louis, so this might actuaclly strenghten Louis in the long run. Right now, however, I am glad that they aren't picking on my buddies (since Louis is the strongest, and Pacal is a techie who needs to be spanked a bit).

The turn before Education pops, we get someone telling us how awesome we are! The venerable Bede counts the cultured civs:

Civ4ScreenShot0263.jpg

Okay. later the same turn, we get the message that QSH adopts Bureaucracy:

Civ4ScreenShot0264.jpg

And our diplo points with him are rolling aswell.

I've mapped almost the entire world (bought Wangs Map for 125g), and I am just about to be done when Louis takes Calakmul from Pacal:

Civ4ScreenShot0265.jpg

As you can see from the screenie, I am teching Economics. I have teched Guilds ->Banking for the cash multipliers, and since none of the AIs are near Education, Liberalism is in the box if we want it (we need Philo, but I was kinda hoping to trade for it. Might have to self tech it though).

And QSH proves to be stoopid:

Civ4ScreenShot0266.jpg

Okay. For further notice, I selfteched Philo after all, and I stopped after it (1200 AD sharp). The situation is as follows:

I got a GM from Eco. He is sleeping somewhere. I need another GP for another golden age, and I pop one next turn. I believe he is a GS, although there might be engi or artist odds. Anyway, he can bu used along with the GM to pop a golden age, which in turn can be used to:
Switch to Free Market, switch to Hinduism, perhaps Pacifism.

We are the supreme techleader. We have Lib open and can grab Nationalism from it, or wait a bit. We have both prereqs for Gunpowder, so going Gunpowder->Chem and grab Steel might seem a good choice.

The only techs we are behind in is the Aesthetics line. We lack Aesth. I know atleast 2 AIs, probably all 3, have Lit. And I suspect Pacal has Music. You might want to look at the fourth screenie, Pacal is 1 turn from Music there. So down that line, we're behind. It leads to MilTrad and some wonders, I believe.

Our economy is wellestablished, we are the supreme leaders of GNP, we run at -5(?) GPT @ 40% slider. I have been pumping some workers out and most of our land is improved now. Mostly cottages and windmills/mines, with the occasional farm. IIRC, I have not removed any improvements that were there when I started. Furthermore, I have lots of forges and Courthouses up, the rest are being built atm.

We are low, but not critically low, on Power. I am thinking of using a city to pump out Longbows/muskets to all cities (east coast has priority, our friends live off our west coast) to improve this. Teching Gunpowder and steel might help a bit here aswell. This could be done as soon as the core cities are done with Universities and Observatories.

And then, the short version:
PROs:
  • We have circumnavigated
  • We have two AIs at pleased, close to Friendly (adopting Hinduism might help here)
  • We have a solid economy based on both cottages, scientist and our capitals monstrous combination of Bureau and settled GPs with Rep
  • Liberalism is ours for the taking
  • Pacal and Louis are at war, leaving us safe (Louis has taken one of Pacals cities, that's all
  • We are the only ones with Astronomy
  • We have a very high happiness and health cap
  • We have the University of Sankore (I grabbed it for the GS points in Athens while it had nothing to do)

CONs:
  • We have been ignoring the Aesthetics line, most of the wonders are built now
  • Our power is relatively low
  • Most of our cities are only protected by one unit, often a phalanx or catapult, even chariot in some cases
  • We are pretty "locked" considering civics; Representation, Bureaucracy and Caste System are all supporting our current economy
  • Some of the AIs are heading for the AP. It might turn out to be Hinduistic, in which case we need some fast spread to prevent the AI from winning Diplo
  • Religion (apart from Buddhism) is very scarce in our empire
  • We have no state religion

I'll give this a go, I'm a decent monarch player so at least I should provide some examples of what not to do. I will likely post a report from my game tonight.

Bah, you should have built the !@#$ thing ;). Usually keeping the AI out of diplo win range is simple enough though. It needs someone to vote for it, so if everyone loves louis it might be necessary to stomp on him ASAP, otherwise it doesn't matter.

Spoiler :

Okay, so I would definately welcome comments/advice on my turn. MC is what this is for, right?

Anyway, how about my placement of Verseilles? In hind sight, knowing that a GE was coming, I would have probably dropped Verseilles in the new world and not gifted independence - or moved the capitol there.

Terrain management? Am I wrong to keep all the farms? Frankly, this is not my usual strat... I usually (since trying for an SE economy) try to keep my cities at +4-5 growth and keep the rest for farms or mines.

Bonus is that my cities are still growing like flies.

Starting with a (. .. .. .. .ing shitload) of farms threw me off a bit.... my tendancy was to keep them and build other improvements: was I wrong at this point in the game?

Lately, even going for an SE, I turn it around by this time and go for cottages much more than I did this turn...

Was I wrong to keep no religion? I could have built the religious wonders at the drop of a hat, but I felt bad going for all the wonders, and I chickened out at picking a religion. Not to mention Organized Religion: this would have given me a huge boost, since I spent most of the round building structures.

Not having BUG (due to the game de-loading it ) definately hurt me in a general sense, but that's my own lazy fault.

For me it was essentially an either/or choice. If I wanted the AP I couldn't do a war with Monty realistically.

At the moment in my save, Qin is pleased with Louis which is not a good thing. I can't bribe him out of open borders either just yet. Diplo loss would really stink I would have to say.

Sure.

Anyway, how about my placement of Verseilles? In hind sight, knowing that a GE was coming, I would have probably dropped Verseilles in the new world and not gifted independence - or moved the capitol there.
It seems like a reasonable choice. Although I believe it might have been better to bypass DR and head towards a more permanent solution like State Property.

I'm not the biggest fan of Versailles even with Marble as it is just way too expensive.

Terrain management? Am I wrong to keep all the farms? Frankly, this is not my usual strat... I usually (since trying for an SE economy) try to keep my cities at +4-5 growth and keep the rest for farms or mines.
Realistically, you should do what you are comfortable with. I kept the farms and ran a bunch of specialists throughout the round. Transitioning to cottages throughout would certainly have been another viable approach. Don't be afraid to replace improvements. I have a broad based plan to replace a bunch of farms with workshops over the next round.

Bonus is that my cities are still growing like flies.
This is very nice, but at a point, it is better to switch off their growth and run max specialists. Most of the cities have the potential to work 5 non artist specialists before caste system thanks to forge+library+market. If you can run those without starving, thats a pretty powerful setup even with the merchant pollution.

Starting with a (. .. .. .. .ing shitload) of farms threw me off a bit.... my tendancy was to keep them and build other improvements: was I wrong at this point in the game?
Really a matter of taste here. There was quite a bit of unimproved land sitting out there so if you wanted to convert farms, it was probably a good idea to get alot more workers out very quickly. I kept them and only focused on making new workers in the southern hemisphere.

Lately, even going for an SE, I turn it around by this time and go for cottages much more than I did this turn...
I foresee a transition to cottages very soon with the NP city taking over the brunt of the GP generation. My plan would be to let each city produce one more GP before shutting them down. Of course my transition is planned more to workshops than cottages.

Was I wrong to keep no religion? I could have built the religious wonders at the drop of a hat, but I felt bad going for all the wonders, and I chickened out at picking a religion. Not to mention Organized Religion: this would have given me a huge boost, since I spent most of the round building structures.
I stuck with NSR as well for most of the round. It is certainly helpful for diplomacy. OR+Buddhism would definitely help with buildings, but it also costs 2 turns of anarchy if you do it out of a GA and hurts the diplomacy. But the happiness was irrelevant.

At the moment in my save, Qin is pleased with Louis which is not a good thing. I can't bribe him out of open borders either just yet. Diplo loss would really stink I would have to say.

What's the exact modifier? Pleased usually isn't enough unless it is *very* close to friendly. I haven't opened the file yet because I'm at work :crazyeye:.

The most effective way to deal with the AP builder is usually to kill them. Once we have view of cities we can tell whether it'll be an actual problem. As someone well-versed in winning via AP I can say that it is extremely obnoxious/difficult to win AP if the religion is well-spread to even 1 civ that won't vote for you. Of course if they share religion then the AI has the real problem of running against the AI that would otherwise vote for it. It's always something to keep an eye on but rarely threatening.

'cause I'm not sure on the etiquette

Thank you for commenting. Your advice is generally advice that I know.... (not to say that it's not welcome - just that I've seen your posts before! ) Still though, specific comments are definately welcome.

I'd like to see some screens from some of the other posters, including you, Vale. I want to see what the alternate worlds look like. In my imagination, I would have taken over France by now.

I'll admit that playing amongst the "playas" influenced my game. In a normal game of my own, I probaly would have gone straight Police State - vassalge - theocracy, micromanaged to maximize hammers, and France would be at least on their last toes by now. Don't ask my why i didn't do this, but I'm still feeling good about the position in my save - due entirely of course to your previous two saves. For god's sake, France doesn't even have macemen yet!

:D :D :D My computer situation is now resolved! Turns out my new power supply was defective and crapped out on me. I took it with my receipt back to the comp store and they replaced it free of charge. So now I am back up and running, hurray! :D :D :D

I thought it might be that but stayed silent for fear of looking stupid . Hardware problems are ticky-tac to figure out to begin with, and in writing it's even harder.

Well whatever, you managed the important thing, which is getting it up and running again :goodjob:.

OK here we go, I think I did a reasonable job this round. As usual, the AutoLog is too long, so I have edited out most of the junk.

Another Academy, my 2nd I think, and ND also comes in, which is nice. Happiness shouldnt be an issue until Biology when we will start really cranking up the populations. Game isnt likely to reach Bio though. Another stone Wonder is available, UoS, and I have made a lot of Monastaries, so I go for it.

Thats it. Replacable Parts is almost done, and Lib can be next. I dont think any AIs are even close, so we are in a pretty dominating position. Vales saves have really showed the power of combining an early rush with a strong SE. I cant remember ever teching this strongly in a game like this.

So here's my first try, let me know how it looks.

Spoiler :
Here goes, my first go at posting a game. First off may I say I was very impressed with the Vale's save, it was even better playing it than it looked on the website. So basically my strategy was to re-build the economy with the end goal being a series of rifle's/cannon wars on the backwards AI.

First part of the strategy was obviously getting as many workers down to the former Aztec lands and re-building. Second was to generate a great prophet for the shrine. To get the GP, I concentrated Tenochitlan on building wonders that produce GP points, first the Chicken Pizza, which I missed and then Angkor Wat.

In retrospect I probably should have only gone for Angkor Wat, but I had little else to build there so why not. After the economy was back in the black I settled a couple more cities, one 2e of the northern iron and one 2e of the gems just out of Thebes' BFC. I soon popped a GS burned him for a Golden age and switched to pacifism and caste system after going on one last whipping binge. During the golden age i built this wonder in athens:

I also converted to buddhism after I cemented relations with Qin and Wang. I intend to go after Louis since he's close, backwards . . . and French! I traded metal casting early to Wang for monarchy and later traded compass to Wang for aesthetics and gold after other AI's had researched it. Other than that there was little trading activity although I refused a number of Louis' demands.

By the end of the round I feel I have the empire to a respectable stage of infrastructure, with HE, Oxford completed, NE close and GT and IW about to be commenced. The GT will go in apache to make a killer rifle draft city. Not sure about IW, maybe Moscow. I took steel from Liberalism and am 4 turns from rifling. So it will be a few more turns then the French will taste rifles and cannons.
