Right now I'm engaged in a fairly extensive war against Egypt (which I'm winning but still taking losses... I actually took a cease fire to rebuild my army and get a few free techs and will continue the slaughter right after 
). Anyways, I've noticed that the AIs are a good bit ahead of me techonology wise, not INSANELY ahead, but still ahead, which worries me because I'm planning a campaign against Germany once I get my UU (Camel Archer) as Germany is at the top of the scoreboard (Egypt was, but I took care of that), with me in 2nd.
Anyways, I'm at 70% research and I'm losing 35 gold a turn, I have about 350 gold right now from sacking Egypt's cities, but when that runs out I'll have to turn my technology down to like 40 or 50% and I'l get REALLY behind in tech (and it's crucial that I not get too behind Germany so my UU can come in handy). I have cottages in nearly every city, but if I use too many of them my towns either stagnate or start starving. I also have FOUR great prophets in my capitol generating an additonal 20 gold but it still isn't enough. This one of one of my biggest problems in Civ3 and it's coming back to haunt me. Anyone got tips for generating cash and staying in the green even with a large army (which costs a lot to upkeep obviously)?
