[R&F] Mongolia First Look

Looks like quite interesting Civ to me!

P.S. I love the music! (Isn't it Urtiin Duu again?)

P.P.S. Civ VI managed to make Genghis more fearsome than his Civ V counterpart. Maybe it's because of dark clothes and armor with several iron parts. Or maybe that his VA has deeper voice than his Civ V counterpart (at least from what I can hear) :P

P.P.P.S. They also made him move a little bit like a robot

I mean it depends on what setup we're talking about. Obviously some crazy military civ will be insanely strong in multiplayer or if you're super tryharding in single player, that's nothing new. But for a "normal" civ game then you shouldn't really look at it from that angle

Singleplayer "tryharding" and multiplayer certainly aren't the only ways people can or should play the game. I would argue, though, that they're the appropriate context to consider when talking about balance. More casual play is, pretty much by definition, set at a challenge level where differences in civ power don't matter very much.

I am going to try to wipe out Mongolia out as soon as possible in every game I play regardless of who is playing mongolia and try to cut down the visibility of Mongolia as much as I can. Normally I would accept Embassies, Trade Delegations and won't mind traders from other civs but not Mongolia, he's going to be my priority target number 1 unless Ghandi is in the game.

Yeah of course, but what I meant is the AI will never be able to take maximum advantage of a civ's abilities, and to balance out that fact you can either crank up the difficulty level for yourself or don't play super seriously (I prefer the former option). In single player you can kinda balance the game yourself with the game setup settings and/or mods etc. It's only really in multiplayer where stuff like this is really a big problem imo

Genghis is back! I guess he's a mainstay of the franchise, like Gandhi, Alexander, and Monty. :p
The Mongol theme sounds good, from what I can hear.

Here's my comments on the Mongol abilities and uniques:
Örtöö-Starting a trade route immediately creates a trading post in the destination city, which also increases your level of diplomatic visibility with its owner, Mongolian units gain +3 Combat Strength against their opponents for each level of this visibility.

This ability seems to be a reference to this. I guess the traders function as spies in the other Civs' lands giving intel back to Mongolia which gives them an advantage. When you declare war on the other Civ, I'm guessing the diplomatic visibility remains the same instead of decreasing due to the ending of trade routes to that nation. As others have said, you do not want Mongolia to send trade routes to you.....:p

Mongol Horde-All cavalry-class units gain +3 to Combat Strength and a Chance to capture defeated enemy cavalry-class units.

It seems powerful. One would focus on building cavalry class units as Mongolia. Capturing defeated enemies reminds me of Ottomans' ability to capture ships in Civ5.

Keshig-ranged cavalry class unit, excellent at outranging enemy forces, and allow any unit in formation with it to share its movement speed.

Once again, the Keshik returns (with a different spelling). I would use them to transport workers to newly founded cities. :p Scythian Saka Horse archers better watch out!

Ordu-unique building which replaces the Stable. All cavalry class units trained in a city with this building receive extra movement.

Extra movement is always nice. The name seems to refer to this.

Conclusion: One should always engage in Conquest while playing as Mongolia.:p In the past, I often was a peaceful builder. Now I'm going for domination victory in many of my games. I'm looking forward to doing this with the Mongols.

PS: Babylon is the first new City-State we've seen so far. No Babylon in this expansion, hopefully they will reappear in a later one. I'm guessing we'll see a replacement CS for Amsterdam eventually.

Don't get me wrong, this is definitely going to be a very strong civ, but for people that prefer to play a little bit more pacifistically then it's a bit of a weird comparison
I wouldn't be surprised if this civ is going to be banned in Multiplayer games, Australia and Scythia by some goups of multiplayer have banned them and I could just see Mongolia been added to the list.

That’s a fearsome looking Civ right there. They seem like they’d be really fun to play.

Gotta love that music too...

Oh, this looks awesome. Much more interesting design than Korea or Netherlands, IMO. Genghis Khan himself looks quite cool, too. Like an actual human being, unlike some leaders I could mention.

What are you saying?

So, love the leader design, the music, and the elements are themed very well

Clearly rewarding warmongering, but for peaceful play, one nice effect is you could field a smaller, more mobile army to defend your land and feel pretty safe from barbs/early civ rushes, so long as you have horses. That would let you focus on building other things in your cities. The immediate trade posts, assuming you don't turn around and attack the other guy, could provide some nice bonuses.

I have to say, I kind of like that they use the China look for cities, because it means if I later conquer China you could more easily make it look as though you are China's successor. I am also glad they start in Karakorum and not in the Chinese heartland. I think it will be interesting when playing TSL games as China and Korea now that you have the Mongols between you. East Asia should be more interesting in general. Now all we just need is Vietnam!

Mongolia is the third mainstay revealed in this expansion, I think we'll see another one or two, so we'll go for dark horses civs.

A really powerful civ, I think I'll love playing with the Mongols.

I will send trade routes to civilizations that I would try to conquer in the future, while this, I will prepare myself to create an army of cavalry, seems to me an interesting strategy.

We will not have Babylon in this expansion, but I still believe we will see at least one civilization of antiquity, anyway.

There's actually no reason to refuse a delegation from Genghis, as a delegation automatically disappears if war breaks out, meaning he loses the access level again.

That might be true, but Kumis still sounds gross.

His agenda may simply be not liking anyone with more horse units than him.
I think his agenda will be to dislike any Civs that he has met and that are still alive!!

:hammer:

Do Celts, and Carthage count as a "Civilization of antiquity"?

Even if Babylon is out we could still get something like Assyria from the same area

Personally I just wanna see Parthia in the game with a bunch of cataphracts, that'd be really cool considering their history vs the Roman Empire and stuff. Doubt it'll happen though

The page seems messed up. Is anyone else just getting a black field?
Yeah I got that too, tried on multiple browsers but nothing :/
