MoO IV by FIRAXIS

I'm thinking, the odds that Firaxis would make a game that captures the things I like about MOO1 are slim to none. If they did make MOO4, it would probably be a good game, and I'd probably buy it. But it wouldn't have that same elegant simplicity that MOO1 does; Firaxis makes big, complex games, not small ones. To retain MOO1's feel, I'd need to wait for some fan to do a quality remake of MOO1. Now I know there's at least one or two such projects going out there in cyberspace... I just hope one of them finishes it enough to release at some point. :)

Have you heard of Sword of the Stars? I consider this as a new modern moo1:

Quote:
Features Overview
♦ A return to the action-packed roots of the 4X genre with some new twists, including a 3D starmap and real-time combat resolution in a 3D environment!
♦ 4 races - Human, Hiver, Tarkas and Liir - each with technology advantages and disadvantages.
♦ Each race has a unique mode of transport between star systems, creating very different styles of play, depending on what race you choose to control.
♦ Slider bar controls and simplified interface to avoid the confusion of other games without sacrificing depth of gameplay.
♦ Over 150 distinct technologies to research on a dynamic tech tree that changes from game to game. While the core technology of the tree is consistent, certain offshoots are random from game to game. There is no perfect path up the tech tree to memorize and exploit, because the path keeps changing!
♦ New technology reflected in detailed ship models, weapons and combat effects. Over 40 weapons from six different weapon classes, in various size classes, from point defence, turrets, and massive spinal mounts!
♦ Players can design and build ships from three size classes - Destroyer, Cruiser, and Dreadnought - by mixing and matching ship sections (command, mission, and engines), then outfitting them with armour and weapons to suit their preference.
♦ Up to 8 players can play against the AI and one another over LAN or online.
♦ Choose from a variety of scenario campaigns to play alone or with friends, each adding more colour and depth to the Sword of the Stars universe.

Re: Sword of the Stars -- we shall see. Lots of people thought MOO3 sounded good pre-release, too. ;) We can but hope this one will turn out well.

Please people, dont' remind me of MOO3. I still have nightmares of me actually going to the store and paying REAL money for that game.

Lots of people thought MOO3 sounded good pre-release, too.

But it was completely clear that it had almost nothing in common with the first both parts. And many mooniacs were sceptical.

Reading their interviews it is clear that moo1 is their starting point. And the battles (well they have lots of experience with homeworld) cant really be that bad like the moo3 junk...just look at the screenshots.

I didn't see moo1 and 2..I only saw 3rd part... It wasn't bad.... could be worse :P

Have anyone know from where I will can get moo1 or moo2? :P

Hmmm this sword of the stars can be realy GREAT! :]

I'd try ebay.

Is there any chance for something like that to happen?

PS: You should really try Galactic Civ 2 when it comes out. It's great!

MoO is available for free download here, and MoO2 can be purchased here.

sirian of sirian and sulla fame has a great page about moo

sullivans long standing page is here

As zed prolly has figured out by now, Liq effing LOVES moo. that's moo as in the one before there was a 2.

As zed puts it so well, the slider simplicity of the game makes it about strategy in a way no other game I've ever played captures the same way. Just as I love CIV for civ, and xcom for xcom, I love moo til the cows come home , for moo.

The second one was a completely different game and as good as it was, it was missing the magic moo had. The ship fights were fun though!

The third one is a bitter sweet story. I was a really really big fan of alan emrich and was thrilled to see him heading up the 3rd version. I helped moderate the gigantic delphi moo3 board years before the game released and watched in slow motion as the propery went from one owner to the next with infogrames being the last set of bosses I noticed.

Problem with the design is that emrich really tried to add too much to the game.. it was a hard lesson to learn that even in computer games, there's a thing such as too much detail. The kitchen sink ideal eventually got emrich sacked from the overall game design and the bombastic artist Rantz took over..

Rantz was the guy that hated the races that were people with an animal head on them... so races like the mrrshans were poof gone. Didn;t matter what the public wanted. Not that I cared but his overall demeanor about the issue left a bad taste in my mouth.

I was long gone by that point already though seeing the writing on the wall well before they started sacking people on the dev team.

Never did bother to play moo3 so I can honestly say, I have no idea just how baddly it turned out!

Cheers!

oh interseting, Martin Cirulis is ceo of the company doing sword of the stars. He was a rather um... opinionated writer for CGW back before the internet, when the magazine was worth something lol. Cool.

I would love to see a compentent game designer take up the MOO2 remake challenge and create something truly great. Firaxis would be nice choice but I think it's more likely they would do a SMAC remake than a MOO2 remake.

Absolutely, were Firaxis to design a new ver. of MoO, I'd buy it.

I can't get enough of MoO II, and I agree, MoO III ranks as one of the worst games I've ever purchased.

Man you are lucky as I have bought many games worse than Moo3. None that were as big a disappointment though. Can you say Outpost.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Buried under all the excess baggage and mistakes of MOO3 was a good game trying to get out from under all the minutiae. Too bad it could never quite succeed, having left drydock with way too much surplus superstructure and several key components missing (well-designed victory conditions, anyone? A diplomacy system that wasn't obscured with 14 layers of mud, perhaps? Not to mention an economy management system that didn't leave you pulling your hair out in frustration?)

I once read somewhere (I think in a developer design diary) that Emrich's original design proposal was deemed insufficiently ambitious, and that the original publisher sent him back to the drawing board to add in more stuff. They didn't just encourage the kitchen sink mentality, they mandated it! That was the first mistake right there, and MOO3 is a good example of how a big enough mistake early in the design cycle can ultimately prove impossible to fix.

For long I thought that TBS died with MOO3. All my favourites went down the drain. RailRoad Tycoon III, Warlords IV and several others disappointed me. I even went so far as buying Age of Mythology to have something to play.

Then came CIV IV which is one of the best games ever! I would buy MOO4 from any company if the reviews were ok. I will buy CivCity Rome and Railroads too unless they really sucks (will check around a bit before buying)

thats the main reason i never cared for moo3. it lacked appeal, seemed bland. a game of space warfare can never be realistic, because real world physics make it impossible. it was a mistake to move away from the space opera feel of moo2.

Both my daughter and I play MOO2. In fact, we occasionally have disagreements because one of us wants to play it and the other has the disk in their computer, playing an on-going game. I never got MOO3 because I heard too many bad things about it. I do play GalCiv2.

If Firaxis put out MOO4, I would seriously consider getting it.
