There are plenty of structures worth some attention in these countries, considering they've been deemed national treasures AND UNESCO World Heritage sites. Though it's just a thought, I felt like bringing it up to discuss some potential wonders.

Japan

Kinkakuji - The Golden Pavilion Temple in Kyoto, originally built as the residence for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, later converted by his son into a Zen Buddhist temple

(Faster construction with Gold, Available if Buddhism is state religion, generates Great Prophet, :) with Vassalage or Feudal)

Nikko Toshogu - The Shinto shrine which Tokugawa Ieyasu is interred. This, apart from the Ise Shrine is one of the most frequented by domestic and international tourists.

( :) with Despotism or Vassalage, Can train 2 Priests/or 1 Free Priest, generates Great Spy)

Yasukuni Shrine - The infamous, controversial shrine that houses the remains of dead soldiers and war criminals of the Second World War

(Less War  in city, :) with Fascism or Divine Cult, with Liberalism, Pacifism, Generates Great Spy or Prophet?)

Kasuga Taisha - The Kasuga Grand Shrine, built in the Heian Period (A.D. 794-1185) as the shrine of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Edicts and messages would be relayed to the gods (kami) by order of the emperor

( :) with Nobility, Can train 2 Priests or Nobles)

I would like to hear any thoughts or opinions, I'll cover Korean in my next post. One can find further details and pictures from Wikipedia, Google, and so forth

I really like your ideas and would install them if they were provided in a modmod.
Especially the 'controversial shrine' idea thrills me, there should be lot more of those "political" buildings.
In my recent game, there is already one other asian wonder, the Himeji Castle, which gives 100% pillaging :gold: and prevents pillaging in your territory, I like it and try to get it most of the time - together with the Christan Chapter Knights in action, roaming the infidels, pillaging gets a money machine. Although I don't know if the castle is yet in the 2.8 beta or part of Afforess' modmod pack.

Dosan Seowon - Dosan Confucian Academy

Built as a memorial to the influential Korean, Neo-Confucian scholar Yi Hwang. It was completed after his death, where before, it was where he retired and established an academy in teaching classics, Confucian thought, and ritual/ceremonial norms of the Yi (Chosun) dynasty

Prerequisite: Education, 4-5 Universities, Confucianism is state religion, Obsolete with Compulsory Education

30% :science: bonus, Built if Confucianism is state religion, -30/-50% Maintenance cost where built, Can train 2 scientists, Generates Great Scientist, :) with Bureaucracy

Cheomsongdae Observatory

One of the oldest and still surviving astrological/astronomical observatories in East Asia. Built during the reign of Queen Seondok of the Silla dynasty, its number of bricks (around 360) can be said to represent the number of days in a year for the lunar calendar, the twelve layers below and above the window can be said to represent the months.

Prerequisite: Calendar, Obsolete with Astronomy

Built faster with stone, 25% :science: bonus, 1 Free Scientist, Generates Great Scientist

Bulguksa Temple

Home to seven national, historic treasures and monuments of Korea including the Seokguram grotto and Buddha statue, the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas, the Blue and White Cloud Bridges to the main temple, a seated, gilt-bronze Enlightened Buddha, and stone stupa. Though the exterior is the most familiar image, a testament to early, Korean Buddhist architecture.

Known to have been ransacked, and damaged during the Japanese invasions, the Japanese colonization, and the Korean War, the temple has been constantly maintained and restored for the sake of cultural and national pride.

Prerequisite: Meditation, Aesthetics, Buddhism as State Religion

Starts a Golden Age, +1/+2 :) in all cities if Buddhism is State Religion, Spreads Buddhism, 30% :culture: bonus in city, 25% War , :) with State Church, Can train 2 Priests, Generates Great Artist/Prophet?

Tripitaka Koreana

The Korean compilation of the Buddhist scriptures in nearly 80,000 wooden printing blocks, dating from the 13th century and is the oldest known collection still intact, written in Chinese script/characters. They were commissioned during various border skirmishes against the Khitan and Mongols, but were burned during invasions by the latter, but restored, believing that doing so would gain the good grace and protection of the Buddha

Prerequisite: Paper, Philosophy, Buddhism as State Religion

:) with State Religion and/or Pacifism, Spreads Buddhism (or event from completion spreads it to cities), 30% :science: bonus, +1 :science: for every Buddhist structure, Can train 2 free Priests or Scientists, Generates Great Prophet

On the other hand, I contemplated something else in line with World Projects for the Tripitaka, since publication of scripture in religion has often been a turning point in its influence, but I'll bring that up elsewhere..

I looked through, and found that Cheomsongdae has already been created by tsentom1

He's also designed The School of Confucius, the Terra Cotta Army, but I wouldn't use them unless I had his permission to tweak them

The real problem with buildings, an especially wonders, is that it is so hard to find building graphics for them. If you find building graphics in the Graphics Forums, and link to them here, I'll whip the buildings up, right away. But most of them time, there are no good graphics, and I don't like adding Wonders without a graphic.

For Modular Wonders III, which I only need graphics for, I plan on adding Kotoku-in. I already have to graphics (no quiet the right Buddhist statue, but good enough) and could release it as a stand alone with the 2.8 updates I have to do with my other wonder modules.

I also like the Dosan Seowon - Dosan Confucian Academy you proposed. Confucianism needs a wonder, as well as Korea. I think I will make a few minor changes with its abilities and use the Confucian Shrine as graphics with a unique button. I could add it as a stand alone with the 2.8 updates.

I was also planning to adding the Charminar Gate and Red Fort in India (on the topic of Asian wonders), but alas, I do not have Graphics...

If, on the unlikely offset that Shinto would be included, perhaps the other Japanese wonders could be used.

I did not mean to imply otherwise that I was ignoring other Asian cultures, as I could rabble on about so many more ideas and yet probably wind up reconsidering or abandoning for the sake of keeping it simple.

I remember coming across a whole collection of icon buttons for Asian wonders, and noticed one for Chinese, Confucian-related, so I'll look for them again.

To keep it simple, I would think the Kotoku-in and Kinkakuji would be enough for Japan, unless the idea of Yasukuni War Shrine sounds appealing. As for Korea, Cheomsongdae may be the best non-religious wonder.

I did not imply that you were ignoring other cultures; I apologize for any offense since it was not my intention. It was simply a personal feeling that Indian Wonders were largely overlooked, but unlike the German wonders I added, I cannot find the graphics for Indian Wonders (Same goes for a Persian Wonder I have planned). I felt that a thread about Asian Wonders being overlooked was the proper place to vent.

I will add in the 2.8 update of my wonders, which will allow compatibility with BULL and hopefully simply installation, however, I am going to be simplifying and changing its abilities so that it will be XML only for ease of installation and to limit bugs (I am currently thinking +4 Culture, +2 Great Scientist, +1 Free Tech, +20% Golden Age Length). That update will also include Kotoku-in (abilities are currently secret) and Dosan Seowon (very similar to what was requested), which have been finished.

None taken, I just did not want to be misunderstood or seem biased towards cultures I'm more familiar with. Cheomsongdae's initial benefits (from the downloads) were OBVIOUSLY too imbalanced, so I like what you've considered for it.

Also, might as well be a construction bonus with Stone, and what technology would you obsolete this at?

Very good then. All of the Wonders I have said I would make have been made (Cheomsongdae, Kotoku-in, Dosan Seowon) and will be available in a download with the RoM 2.8 update for all of my previous wonders.

Thanks for suggesting the Korean wonders, I was really scratching my head trying to figure out a Confucian Wonder.

Since Afforess has been kind enough to eventually develop and incorporate Shinto, I decided to salvage one previous idea and bring out a new one.

Itsukushima Shrine - Req Coastal City, Seafaring, Aesthetics

  • +1 :) from Forest, Jungle
  • +1 :) from Camp
  • +1 Trade Route
  • +1 :commerce: from water tiles
  • +5 :culture:
  • +4 :gold:
  • +4 Great People Points (I can't decide what type of GP to generate)

The island shrine famous for its Torii gate, built out on the water, it seems as if it floats when the tide is high. Travelers cross the gate by boat to access the island, once sacred and forbidden ground to commoners. Plant and animal life (namely indigenous deer and monkeys) flourish peacefully even to this day thanks to preservation of the surrounding environment and sparse population.

Yasukuni War Shrine - Req Facism

  • -25% War  in City
  • +1 :) with Fascism, Nationalism, or Intolerant
  • +1  with Liberalism, Secular, Pacifism
  • +2 :) if Shinto is State Religion
  • +4 :culture:
  • Generates Great Spy
  • +10% Great General Emergence

The famous war shrine. Built in the Meiji Period at the behest of the emperor as a memorial to soldiers who died to bring about the Restoration. It would later enshrine war dead for future generations, including those of the Second World War (especially known war criminals). In what is largely a secular Japan, the shrine is now privately owned and maintained as a religious institute with no affiliation to the government, and is controversial for the enshrinement of war criminals, and for being visited by statesmen such as Diet members or prime ministers (namely Koizumi)

I have almost got this one working. Haven't worked out the forest and jungle bonus yet. Do you want safari to give the same bonus as camp? What sort of cost to build are we looking at? Or which other world wonder costs the same. Still have to do the text also.

The Itsukushima Shrine is going to require some python to put the bonuses in for jungle, forest and camp. Not only do I need to do it for when it is built but I will need to check whenever jungle/forest grows or is chopped, similarly for when a camp is built/pillaged.

Attached is a preview, ie the code. It needs to go in Custom Buildings and the MLF needs to be changed to load it.

I have guessed at the cost, which may be a bit high and it provides points towards a great artist.

I haven't actually done anything yet...

Sorry to have implied it, I should have put more emphasis on "eventually." So it's only fair, we've all got our hands tied.

I nearly hadn't thought of that. Preserves and Safari already provide an initial amount of happiness, I was going for the idea that the bonus is based around virgin, untouched forest/jungle. But if pythons are involved, don't trouble yourself with it, I'll just think of something simpler.

I have guessed at the cost, which may be a bit high and it provides points towards a great artist.

For cost, I'll say about as much as the Great Lighthouse or a standard cathedral (maybe 25%-50% more than one), since this is a shrine, but the only structure to be seen is the famous, floating Torii gate.

And could not stress enough, this can only be built if Shinto is your religion, but should go without saying. Had to be sure.

All the Japanese temples should incur maintenence costs to represent their propensity to getting burnt down XD
