Top Heroes of of the book "Heroes: A History of Hero Worship"

5) Alcibiades
4) Odysseus (likely fictional, but archetypal significant)
3) Achilles (see above, only he set the standard for all heroes)
2) Giuseppe Garibaldi

And for the only one who wasn't so directly violent:
1) Cato the Younger

excluded were El Cid for being kinda boring, Francis Drake because Alcibiades took his place, and Wallerstein for being evil.

How was Cato not directly violent?

How was Cato not directly violent?

Key word was "so". The reasons for his fame were his persuasion via oratory more than his cunning as a military genius. He would traverse the forum more or less alone in times when those of his prestige would travel with dozens of guards, and had more than once talked lynch mobs out of killing him. that doesn't happen without super "speeching" powers. His fierce articulation of his unwavering principles is what netted him his spot in that book, whereas the others are more violent iterations of those we would consider heroes. Sure, Cato wielded the sword and commanded combat, but that's not what his legend is about. Someone Garibaldi or Francis Drake on the other hand....

Ah. Too bad he was a douchebag and an optimas when you actually get down to, you know, what he was all about.

Well, some of it. But all of those guys were douchebags, and looking at the list the common thread of heroicism narrates that by definition extra-societal heroes are inherently going to be douchebags. I mean, Garibaldi sends battalions on repeat suicide missions. Wallerstein is the quintessential evil-general who executes his soldiers for "waking him up too early". Odysseus is a villain in many respects as awesome as he is. The book is a great read and the heroes within are a cast of impressive, awful human beings.
