More Wonders

New Wonder Idea:

Seeing as we already have the Arecibo Observatory on the list, I propose the addition of the Square Kilometer Array. It will be the largest radio telescope in the history of humanity when complete in the 2020s, and should require the nanotechnology tech. It should cost 20,000 :c5production: to build, but should yield a bonus of 20% :c5science: and 10 :c5happy: to the entire empire, and should also produce a bonus of 2 :c5culture: for its city.

So with Gods and Kings I've been thinking about the potential for religious wonders and it's kind of disappointing that the developers really didn't delve into all the possibilities for wonders that boost religion. I mean there are plenty of faith-boosting wonders, but there is only one wonder, the Mosque of Djenné, that actually improves your religion.

I wanted to throw up a few ideas for religious wonders here since this the premier thread for high-quality wonders. :goodjob: For the religion-type wonders already on your to-do list such as Chartres or Cologne Cathedral, I think an awesome effect would be unlocking a bonus belief, just like the Byzantine UA.

Also, since they are essentially world wonders, you could consider the idea of holy shrines. That might be confusing since we already have shrines in G&K- I'm actually talking about the holy-city-only temples built by Great Prophets in Civ4. All the shrines would have the same effect, gold for followers, just like Civ4. The idea would be that you found the religion with the first prophet, enhance it with the second, build your shrine and make it profitable with the third.

Right now there isn't much incentive to actively spread your religion all over the place, choosing beliefs that make it profitable to do so aren't worth it when you consider that you can instead forget spreading it and concentrate your faith on cathedrals, mosques, or monasteries. Along with the holy shrines, I want to suggest a wonder that will justify creating a truly global religion that spans the map.

The Cathedral of Seville

It's the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third largest church of any kind ever built. It was built at the time when Seville was the center of trade between Spain, Africa, and the New World, so it represents the wealth generated by the spread of Spanish influence around the world. The treasures inside are said to be made of the gold and silver from the mines of the Aztec and Inca empires, and the Cathedral is also the tomb of Christopher Columbus. I think that in-game this wonder should give gold for followers of your religion in cities overseas or on different continents. If those mechanics are not possible, then the gold bonus could be for followers of the same religion connected by overseas trade routes.

Seville Cathedral
+1:c5culture:
+1 :c5gold: for every 2 overseas followers / +1 :c5gold: for every follower connected by an overseas trade route
+1 Great Merchant Point
Anyone getting problems using the mods in Gods and Kings? I can't seem to build any of the wonders anymore, they just don't appear after activating them in the mod browser.

Yeah, I haven't been able to use them either.

If you're going to throw up, do it outside. :p

Excellent idea, we should make more of them. It may also be excellent to try a hand at espionage enhancing wonders too.

Okay, so thanks to SamBC I've been able to track down the issue, and it's actually awesome. What they've done is make Culture a proper yield, so instead of having a <culture> tag in the XML (Which was what was causing them to not work) you now have a yield added thing. What this means is we can now do everything with Culture that we could previously do to other yields - Per population without LUA, add it to tiles etc. Expect new effects soon! :D

If I remember, some culture wonders which yield culture on determined square didn't work (like La Maestranza).

Well done on the wonders!! Those are really, really awesome.

Do you provide a single download with all the wonders, by any chance? I would really love to try all of them but the list is quite enormous.. :P

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was thinking that they will eventually end up there too, but I'm wondering if I can get the bundle through the CivFanatics download database instead. :)

Yeah, that's because all the culture tags don't exist anymore, they're just the standard yield ones now - So anything which provides culture on a resource or anything like that won't work.

Cheers whoward for the response. Hi Cocytus, as Whoward said, I do have the collection on Steam Workshop. I may eventually release the wonders all as one big pack but I can't see that happening for a while. Cheers!

Set amongst the city of Rangoon, Myanmar, Shwedagon Paya is one of the world's largest Buddhist Stupas at a height of 99 metres. It is largely known for the coating of Gold, which has been donated by generations of Burmese nationals. It is also rumoured to contain parts of the remains of 8 Buddhas, collected by travellers across the over 2,500 years of Shwedagon Paya's existance. Ingame, Shwedagon Paya provides +3

Funny, I could have sworn you did this one already. It's such a famous wonder I thought it would have been on the top of your list. Close to Thailand too, I thought sukritact might have had fun with the art :goodjob:. Great work as always. Off-topic: do you happen to be Buddhist sukritact?

ShahJahanII: I believe that the wonder had already been introduced pre-expansion; it was just updated to make more sense, what with religion being added and all.
Also glad to hear that thing about culture being changed into a yieldable resource, like science. I had always wondered why none of the buildings/wonders that increased the culture yield of tiles never actually did so.
Also, does anyone know: are we now able to actually create new natural wonders (plus graphics) for the game?
