Mormonism- Cult?

"every sperm is needed
in your neighbour'ood"

personally, being a non-religious person, i find all religions very very interesting. i don't think mormons are cultists at all. infact, they're very nice friendly people. i will admit though, all i know of Mormonism is from Southpark.. so i really don't know anything at all about them.

but in my opinion, religion is neither here nor there, so log as you lead a good honest life and all that jazz.

I think the only thing screwed up about SLC is the fact that its tough to get a good drink there. Also, the lake smells pretty bad.

Why does the lake smell bad? Is this somehow connected to the bad drinks? People serve drinks from the smelly lake? Or the lake is salt?

This has become sort of an explanation of our beliefs, which is fine I guess although there is a link in my sig to another thread dedicated to it.

Status of ex-members - although we believe it is a bad thing to leave the church, it is not policy to be mean to them or anything. They tell us to be nice, as after all they might come back (happened to my sister). In fact, I have a great deal of experience with this - several of my family members left the church, including my mom. She no longer has much contact with members of the congregation (only natural) but they are friendly when they run into her. If there is any bad treatment, it is a cultural thing, and very not encouraged.

As far as large families - it's just a cultural thing. In my experience, Hispanic LDS families are smaller than Hispanic non-LDS families, but it varies. We just like kids. And although we aren't supposed to masturbate (please let's not get into that here) birth control is allowed.

As far as the song - I've heard it before. Kind of funny, especially since a lot of my friends in high school came from large Catholic families.

Eran your so nice, it makes me almost want to come visit the church for an actual study if that kind of thing is allowed. I can add it to my list of being (Catholic, Protestant, Calvinist,(Shiite) Muslim, Agnostic, Buddhist, Hindu, Shinto,) for awhile in order to understand it better. I've a fascination with human belief, even if I myself have none in the religious/spiritual sense.

Onto the matter at hand; yeah. No more cultish than any other religion or group. /cop out

@Low Tier Hero - I think thats a question more appropreate to his FAQ thread. Not sure where it disapeared to though.

Are you guys allowed birth-control between spouses?

Yup. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that *isnt* allowed between spouses

So many people here are ignorant of Mormon beliefs, if they just knew them, they would be ashamed. Mormonism IS a Cult, it will always be one, it is still one right now. They believe in things like Native Americans being Israelites and that they were cursed with red skin because of sin, as well as blacks being cursed with black skin b/c of their sin. Not to mention, iirc they believe there are three gods, instead of just one, that Jesus was the son of a devil, and that heaven is actually a place next to a different galaxy.

Mormon Doctrines

1. There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163); There is a mother goddess, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443); God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321); After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pages 345-347, 354); God resides near a star called Kolob, Pearl of Great Price, pages 34-35; Mormon Doctrine, p. 428.)

The book "the Mormon Docterine", oddly enough, is NOT MORMON DOCERTINE, and has some rather silly things in it

Do you deny everything else I have said? I'm not going to argue about the Mormon Doctorine because I don't know anything about it, however, the other points?

Yes, I do deny some of what you have said. I do not wish to get into a theological fight with you in this thread (we have others for that).

Your quote however, is incorrect

See him dodging the issue? "I deny some".. laughable. Why don't you just admit that it is a cult, on par with Scientology, to boot.

I admit nothing, because your claims are bullcrap. I worship but one God, and thats the God of Abraham, God. This Kolob bussiness is bull as well.

One can accuse me of lots of things of CFC, but you could never accuse me of running away from my faith, which is something I am proud of. THere are at least two 20 page threads where me and Eran answer theological questions about Mormonism, and you can find the answers there.

But when you get all beligerant, why would anybody want to talk to you?

Why don't you ignore garric and answer important questions such as why the lake smells at Salt Lake City? ;)

Ahhh, shoot, I forgot about this.
Actually, I really don't know. I'm not a native Utah resident (Utahian?), and I've only been there a few times, in the summer. I suspect it has something to do with the high salt content. I hear locals refer to "lake rot" sometimes. You can't smell it from the city or anything....but both times I've been to the lake, I couldnt help but think "wow, this smells awful".

I'll try to look it up somewhere. Anybody from the area know exactly why?

I sometimes hear this accusation crop up that Mormonism is a cult. Why do people keep saying this? It's beleifs are just as crazy and farout as just about any other organised religion.

So has anyone that thinks otherwise wish to enlighten me on this? I don't know much about Mormonism except one south park episode about it and the fact that two forum members here (at least) are Mormon

I hate how they walk around knocking on doors. ughh it makes me so mad.

garric, why are you trying to persuade mormons posting here that their religion is a cult? its pointless. get jack chick to try to explain to muslims they are followers of a moon god, he`ll probably fail. get a rabbi to try and persuade a christian jesus was not the messiah, he`ll probably fail.
note; i also mainly know about mormonism from that south park episode.
and; i am atheist.
