What is the most impressive building you have visited and why?

Was it the size, age or beauty of it that impressed you most?

Simple enough question. Post a picture if you like so we know which building you are refering to.

I've not made my mind up about which building I was most impressed by but the Houses of Parliament come close due to the ornateness of the place. I'm not particularily well travelled though so there's alot more for me to see yet.

NOTE:
This is supposed to be the most impressive building you have visited, not just seen on the TV. I can google to see those.

'The palace' at Knossos. Not for the architecture, beauty, age or size but the historical and mythical 'feeling' of the place.

:)

The Empire State Building, a real beautiful building that is also really tall.

The Taj Mahal, not simply for its exquisite, intricate craftsmanship, but because it has stood the test of time like none of our buildings today look like being able to do. It still looks like it was only just made yesterday.

Rosslyn chapel... even though it was made famous by DaVinci Code, it still is very impressive building.

Because of the carvings (like that angel playing bagpipes :) ), and the mixture of various architechtural styles.

The most impressive one that I have seen in person would be the St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna...

not sure why, exactly, but this building really had an effect on me. Maybe it was the catacombs tour...

World Trade Center 1 and/or 2.

I remember my father telling me that they were so tall that if I stood with directly against the wall, at the base, and attempted to look toward the top, that I could not do it without falling backward. He was right *John rubs the unassuming soft spot on his head*.

I did not travel much in my life, I did most of my traveling inside quebec.

The building that impressed me the most is the Manic5 dam.
IIRC the Manic5 is the biggest arc(barrage a arches) dam in north america.
It's named Manic 5 or Daniel-Johnson. He was the prime minister of Quebec.

a little bit of history on why this Dam has his name IIRC.
Daniel Johnson went to manic5 to do the opening ceremonies, He died the night before the opening ceremonies struck by a heart attack.

This Dam is HUGE ....... its up north in Quebec north of the 45 parralel. Its something you dont see often.

I can't quite put into words my experience at this monument. That, with the Wall right after it.... indescribable.

I'd have to say that the Great wall of China is the most impressive so far... I've done some fair travelling, and the great wall is basically the most impressive man-made structure so far. Don't know if this counts as specifically a building, but still...

If you truly want to see some impressive buildings in one single location, I recommend a trip ot Las Vegas.

Just walking up and down the strip you will see a good majority of the largest hotels in the world. The variety of designs is just incredible as well.

The Roman arena in Nimes, France. Still in use after all these
years.

I still haven't travelled much (I wish money was free!)

I honesly can't think of any really amazing buildings I've seen in person. Since it's way bigger than most buildings though, I suppose it wouldn't be breaking the rules TOO much if I named the USS Nimitz:

Fifty: holy crap! Is that the actual size of it? ;) My poor little computer just had a heart attack....
