Its hard enough for two adults to get along over long periods of time. Three or four? Forget it, no thanks. If other people feel they can handle it, more power to them, they should go for it. I dont see how morality figures into it at all.

I personally prefere one spouse, because I like to concentrate on only one thing(I don't want to insult any females by this). But some of my friends had three girl-friends at the same time(until one of them discovered the others, then I had no girl-friend for a while, but two blue eyes *g*)

Well polygamy was the norm in ancient China. It was only the poor commoners who were monogamous. For the upper classes having a concubine (or two... or three...etc.) serves as a status symbol.

Despite the set-up, they seem to get along just fine since there never were any bothersome in-laws. Once a daughter gets married off, the analogy is that of water thrown out the door.

Inside the household however, intrigues, alliances and plots abound, as the many wives struggle for favor from the master.

Today China is completely monogamous (including even the Muslims). What's worse, our women have embraced Western notions like "sexual equality" and our (men's) lives are now hell. We now need to woo and pamper our girlfriends before marriage, and help with the housework, dishes and laundry after marriage. *sexist sarcasm*

From everything I've seen and read, polygamy is a tricky, tricky business. It's very, very difficult to keep feelings of jealousy down. In the case of a husband with multiple wives, even if they all like each other, he has to walk an incredibly fine line to prevent some from feeling jilted. Equal amounts of time and attention have to be spent with each one, and he can't allow himself to get closer to one than to any of the others. In practice, this generally means introducing a lot of emotional distance into the relationship. That's really the only way to keep the ship running smoothly.

I married my wife because I wanted to be as close to her as I could. So no multiples for me.

Say, your objective of marriage was to produce children. In that case would your prefer polygamy?

Sure. There are lots of situations in which polygamy makes sense. While I would oppose making polygamy legal in this country at this time, (mostly because that would require an extensive review of many of the property and guardianship rights currently associated with marriage) I'm not going to say that it's never a good idea.

But I seriously doubt it's a good idea for most people living in the West today. (even overlooking the fact that it's illegal)

One wife and only one wife.

No, one is probably more than enough.

Considering that we men are just overgrown children, that would be the wiser choice.

Maybe it's just the fact that the vast majority of the folks here are heterosexual males and Narz forgot about the few folks who aren't.
I didn't forget. I just aimed the poll at a select target group. No need to feel "discriminated against" if you don't fit the criteria for taking the poll. I wouldn't take offense at a poll directed at women or gays or blacks or ducks or big bearded Russians, why would I?

Everyone is just an overgrown child technically. Are you trying to glorify women by putting men down?

I don't glorify anyone.

I think AVN would agree with him having 5 wifes then ... You and your 4 wives. :mischief:
:( Apparently he doesn't (or so he claims) so I guess it's back to the drawing board.

Oh ok. I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with glorifying. I think it's nice to glorify and be glorified. That's why I like Walt Whitman, he glorifies everyone!

Hmmm, I shouldn't have used the word glorify. Maybe aggrandize was a better word.

Although not the majority of people, the majority of "relatively distinct" societies permit polygyny. In fact, one could be so bold as to call it the traditional definition of marriage.

Me personally? I would probably want just the one.

Ask me again after we perfect cloning.

Not if she earns more than she spends!

Narz, you should always watch how much toilet paper a woman uses, because that's how she will spend your money after you are married. ;)

Polygamy should be illegal. I personaly think that it should be a sin to practace polygamy (The Muslims are the exception in my book).

Why would they get special treatment?

Anyway, I wouldn't want multiple wives. First, because I believe it's a sin, and secondly because, quite simply, I think I'd have enough trouble handling one women, much less two.

Polygamy is like group therapy

Spiritual ideals obstruct my ability to properly contemplate this question, so I have no answer.
