Mump4 - AWD Standard Pangaea

I started playing from Own's save and also saw that it wouldn't be easy. I also replayed starting from my own save, and I got to 7 towns (spots 1, 2, 3 and 5) and 4 enemy towns razed, but we met the Ottos and Sumerians, so in the end it probably wasn't to be.

We got very early contact this time, which negated the excellent defensive position in the end.

I'd still like to go with the Germans, but I am not against any other choices. So I'll try more starts with the Germans, and anyone else can also try some starts with any civ they choose.

I found what appears to be a pretty decent start and am running it now. I'll have the 1st 20 turns up soon.

And I want to hand this off at this point. No luxes yet but no contact with the enemy either. Big decision here with the Settler and I'd rather have the rest of the team discuss if we wish to move any further.

I'd consider settling the regular grassland 1N of the coastal tobacco, the riverside hill SSW, the riverside plains next to the three BGs, or the riverside grassland 1E of the riverside tobacco.

I think this start looks promising; a city at the mouth of that river would naturally lie behind front lines and need much less effort to defend.

3250BC
Switch Berlin to spear, move out settler and warrior

3100BC
Found Leipzig, meet a French warrior 2 tiles north. They have the same number of towns as us, have 10g, are up Masonry, Alpha and CB, down WC.

2590BC
8 warriors have arrived at Leipzig, with 2 more on the way. We have 4 spears and a warrior ready.

We loose 1 spear, they loose 6 warriors.

IT
2 more warriors die.

IT
We loose a vSpear against a rWarrior.

IW is in, but there's no iron nearby... :( I send out a warrior to start looking for some, and immediately find some:

mump4.2_iron.jpg

Sorry for the brief report. There were quite a few more kills during the ITs I didn't mention. Some wonders have been built.

The green civ most be the Greeks, so we'll need an army to make progress there. We should still be able to found on the hill N of the iron. A leader should arrive pretty soon with all the combat we'll face.

> Save <

Okay, I'll see if I can grab that Iron.

Edit: It went fairly well, I think we have a shot on this one.

Preturn:

Move the eSpear to Berlin; I'd like to put him in the Iron town.

IT:

Berlin: Spear->Settler

Turn 1 (1725 BC):

Move the Warrior off the mountain - I'm hoping to have the Settler moving before we meet Greece.
Move the new vSpear next to Leipzig to prevent the French warrior from walking on our mined grassland tile.
Move a Spear into Hamburg and drop lux to 10%.

IT:

Leipzig riots :blush:

Turn 2 (1700 BC):

Move citizen assignments so Leipzig will stop rioting. It slows the production of the Settler in Berlin, but we'll still get the settler when Berlin grows in four turns.
Lux slider back to 20%.

IT:

Zzz...

Turn 3 (1675 BC):

Order restored in Leipzig.

IT:

Leipzig: Spear->Archer

Turn 4 (1650 BC):

Uh-oh. Greece just had a culture expansion, and the Iron is now in their territory. We're going to meet them before our Iron city is founded :(

IT:

Two French archers appear out of the fog E of Leipzig.
Hamburg: Spear->Spear

Turn 5 (1625 BC):

Zzz...

IT:

Another French archer appears out of the fog.
Berlin: Settler->Archer

Turn 6 (1600 BC):

We're ready for the assault in Leipzig.

IT:

An Indian warrior wanders out of the fog
French warrior suicides vs. a vSpear, promotion.
French Archer slaughters the eSpear :( (1-1).
Leipzig: Archer->Archer
Dutch complete GLH.

Turn 7 (1575 BC):

Dial up India to declare war. They're up Masonry, Alpha, Pottery, the Wheel, and CB. They have 9 cities, 1 gold, and two luxes. Gulp.
I decide that a risk is in order because the French have three Archers in a stack outside Leipzig. Result: We win, no HP lost (2-1).

IT:

French shuffle archers but don't attack. India fortifies next to our worker/spear pair N of Leipzig.

Turn 8 (1550 BC):

Take another risk with the Archer. It pays off; we lose 2hp and promote to elite, and the French are down to two visible Archers, one of which is wounded and retreating.
Move the settler + 3 spears onto the Hamburger cow :lol: The good news: Greece is roading our Iron for us!
The bad news: We're now at war with three civs.
Greece has 9 cities, 59 gold, 1 lux, and up 5 techs (Masonry, Alpha, Pots, Wheel, CB).

IT:

Sigh. Greek Worker walks away from the Iron.
Two more French archers appear out of the fog.
Masonry->Alpha

Turn 9 (1525 BC):

Hire a scientist in Leipzig (just grew to size 5) to prevent a riot. The lux slider would have had to go up to 40% to keep that citizen working, and the Archer in Leipzig is due in 1 turn either way. Besides, none of the other cities really need that much from the lux slider

IT:

French request an audience. Forget it.
Berlin: Archer->Worker
Leipzig: Archer->Walls

Turn 10 (1500 BC):

eArcher dies vs. French rArcher :mad: (2-2).
vArcher kills French rArcher (3-2).
Frankfurt founded on the hill 1N of the Iron. Making Barracks.

IT:

two French Archers suicide vs. Leipzig vSpears (5-2).
Two more French archers appear out of the fog.
Two Greek Archers and a Warrior appear out of the fog near Frankfurt.
Hamburg: Spear->Palace (prebuild for Spear; we want a forest chop to go to Frankfurt).
Konigsberg: Spear->Worker

Turn 11 (1475 BC):

vArcher kills Indian Warrior (6-2).

IT:

Berlin: Worker->Spear
Leipzig: Walls->Spear
Greeks are building ToA.

Turn 12 (1450 BC):

vArcher kills French archer (7-2).
We now have 6 Greek units visible around Frankfurt.

IT:

Zzz...

Turn 13 (1425 BC):

IT:

Zzz...

Turn 14 (1400 BC):

Two French archers suicide vs. Spears (one in Leipzig, one N of Leipzig 9-2).
Leipzig: Spear->Archer

Turn 15 (1375 BC):

Uh-oh. The Greeks have moved four units next to an underdefended Hamburg. I shift units, but this will be a nail-biting IT.
Hmm, one of the units is a lone Archer, and I have an eSpear next to him. No guts, no glory...
Spear kills Archer, producing a Leader!!! (10-2).
Lux slider to 40% to support 10spt in Leipzig.

IT:

Our rSpear in Hamburg kills an attacking Greek Warrior and promotes (11-2).
Two Greek archers attack an rSpear 1S of Berlin (he's moving to reinforce our southern front). Result: Two dead archers and a promotion (13-2).
Berlin: Spear->Settler
Konigsberg: Worker->Barracks

Turn 16 (1350 BC):

Army built in Berlin.
The charging Spear worked so well last turn that I decide to try it again. Unfortunately, I lose the first attacker spear before killing my target and reopening the road between Hamburg and Berlin (14-3).

IT:

Greek Archer dies vs. one of our spears (15-3).
Leipzig: Archer->Spear
India is building the Hanging Gardens.

Turn 17 (1325 BC):

Move troops a bit. Our Worker is now in position to hook up the Iron.

IT:

We spot the first Greek Horseman :cry:
Hamburg: Spear->Spear
Frankfurt: Barracks->Walls
Indians are building the Great Wall.

Turn 18 (1300 BC):

Move troops around more. The Greeks keep going north towards Berlin for some reason.

IT:

Ugh, we have terrible RNG luck this time around. A Greek Horseman and Archer slaughter two of the three defenders of Frankfurt :( (15-5).
We spot two Indian Warriors coming out of the fog in the Greek territory.
Alpha->Math
Leipzig: Spear->Spear

Turn 19 (1275 BC):

Kill a Greek Warrior with an Archer (16-5).
Lose an Archer trying to kill a Greek Archer (16-6).

IT:

3 French archers, 5 Indian Warriors, and an Indian Spear appear out of the fog.
Berlin: Settler->Spear
French start the Great Wall

Turn 20 (1250 BC):

Move troops. We could be facing four Greek Archers at Frankfurt this IT, so it may be a nail-biter.

Ok, I got it. I hope to slip playing in tomorrow, but it being Christmas, I am unsure exactly when.

BTW, Elephantium did you use the standard paint program of windows to make the picture? If so there is a trick to resizing the image. Save it as jpeg before resizing Jpeg resizes much better and by saving it first you are now in jpg format and the resize keeps the text readable. I resize 78% to get it to about 800 across.

The reason I mention this is because I get broken text like that any time I resize before saving.

Preturn: Looks like we are just biding time until Sword. I change one build to Archer just because we have so many spears already. It can pick off weaker units even when we have the swords.

IBT: Archer steps on our only road to the Capitol I cannot afford to have it Pillaged and lose the ability to build Swordsmen.

Note: wins/loss will be approximate. I am bad at remembering to note every battle which is why I don't usually keep unit counts.
1225 BC: We don't have a healthy Archer to attack Archer on road. Attack with a reg Warrior who loses. Attack with a Spear and get lucky - no damage and it is now Elite.
Archer Attacks up north and becomes Elite. Note that I add another spear to the road to hopefully discourage the next archers from attacking it.
Berlin switched to settler. Only way to "prebuild" the sword. Otherwise I will get a Spear or Archer before Iron connected. (1-1)

IBT: Hold off 2 Archers. (3-1)

1200 BC: Attack a Horse, but it retreats. (3-1)

IBT: So many units. Hold off 2 more Archer. (5-1)

1175 BC:

IBT: Hold off an Archer attack or two. (7-1)

1150 BC: Units are invading our lands and we are unable to attack any without exposing the attacking unit. Getting tricky. Fortunately our sword prebuild in Capitol will be built next turn. We build one every turn for the first 3 so 3 turns to our Army.

IBT: Hold off a Warrior and two Archer (note that we have the advantage with an Archer bombard vs reg Archers and our Spear are vets. Still RNG has been good since that first loss. (10-1)

1125 BC: Sword vs Archer wins. Archer vs Archer loses. Archer vs Warrior wins. (12-2)
Don't quite have enough units for everything. Decide to risk the loss of an Archer to cover a town with a 3rd Spear. Lots of enemies could get lucky and cost a town.

IBT: Archer wins vs the Horse. Lose our Elite Spear to an Archer in the Capitol. Beat off 3 Archers. (16-3)

1100 BC: First wins with the new Army. Kill off 2 Archers. (18-3)

IBT: Hold off 3 or 4 Archers with Army. Hold of 2-3 in town (24-3).
We get a leader on defense.

1075 BC: Switch Frankfort to the Heroic Epic and rush it. We are aways from 8 towns. That town could use some culture.

IBT: Three Spears defending vs several warriors has a rough start. We lose 2 of the spear and kill maybe 6 Warriors. (30-5)
The Greeks are Building the Great Library

1050 BC: Kill a Spear and an Archer (32-5)

IBT: Excellent RNG leads to 4 Archers Killed. (36-5)

1025 BC: Kill a Spear and an Archer (39-5)

IBT: Don't remember if we were attacked. Probably won one or two (40-5)
First Swordsman (indian) enters our territory.

1000 BC: Kill a Spear on our roads. Kill an Archer. [42-5]
Army healing.

Notes: RNG was quite good. If things had gone badly we would have likely have lost the game already due to too many losses.

Army should be to full HP again next turn which is a healthy 14 hp.

At the end we have fewer units in our territory than previous turns.

We could use the settler that has been hanging around the capitol in the indicated spot.

There is likely a Greek city near the wines that would be nice to capture or replace. Our border didn't expand in that direction.,

Leipzig has an Entertainer until it gets its MP Back.

Sending out the Army to take out/capture Greek cities would be best I think.

Mump4_BC1000.jpg

Roster
Mumpulus - on deck
Own
Elephantium
Greebley - just played
glenmetz - up

Agreed on Greebley's city spot, and on sending army towards the Greeks. I'd go for the city (almost) straight SE of Berlin, then move south after that and work toward the wines.

Additional towns should then go 1S of the tobacco, and 1E of the tobacco. The first one should be a temp town, so build walls only, then cats. I'd do that quickly, to shield Berlin. With those towns close together, we should be able to play good defense.

I feel a road 1N of Frankfurt is very important. It will allow us to control the area around Frankfurt and South Tobacco. It's also a better protection of our iron supply.

The GL is out, so I think we should go cheapest tech first after math.

Sorry, thought I posted a got it on this yesterday but didn't. Any other plans other then attempting to take out the greek cities to the south? Do we want to capture them or raze them? Not thinking that I'll actually get to them in 10 turns.

Keeping small cities doesn't have too much flip risk this early. The real problem is holding on to the city without tying up the army to do so. I think you will be starting by Razing since we don't have free defenders to send off. I would send the army to frankfort and raze the nearby cities unless you think you can arrange to defend them.

The reason for around frankfort is to get the Wine in the near future.

I think you should be able to raze one or two cities if you send the army right away. Currently attacks are light and we now have some swords so it is the best time get the army out. If things get desperate though, the army can play defense.
