Music of Civ VI

I wonder what musical score they've chosen for Norway. My bets are either on some sort of Viking Age composition (if there is such a thing), or a composition by Grieg.

If it was I'd be up by now : (

But I actually nearly cried, the latest Yogcast video (Part 2 with France), after they pick a Pantheon, it is such a beautiful piece of music playing in the background!

In Civ V they used an old Danish tune from the 1300s, Drømde mig en drøm i nat, as well as Nobilis humilis, a Nowegian tune from around the same time period, for the Danish Viking leader. Samples of both tunes can be found here: http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/music.shtml

Interestingly, the website mentions a tune specifically for Harald Hardrada:
One source of early musical evidence comes from 1780, in a book written by Jean-Baptise de la Borde, Essai sur la Musique Ancienne et Moderne. In his book, de la Borde included five tunes to Old Norse texts, which he said were "as they today are sung in Iceland." De la Borde mentioned that he took his information about these Icelandic tunes from the Danish-German musician Johann Ernst Hartmann, who settled in Copenhagen in 1762. It is assumed that Hartmann learned the tunes from Icelanders who visited what was then also the capital of Iceland (Lie, "Viking Songs").

Three of the songs recorded by de la Borde are to poetry taken from the Poetic Edda, specifically the poems Vôluspá, Havamál and Krakamál. The tunes for each of these three pieces are very similar...

The fourth tune is a song for Norwegian king Haraldr Hardraði, and it is different than the tunes for the Eddaic poems, starting and ending on the third instead of on the major tone. Interestingly enough, this tune works perfectly if a second part is added in parallel thirds in the same style as the Nobilis humilis hymn (Lie, "Viking Songs").

So looks like we know which tune will be representing him and Norway this time! I expect we might see some Nobilis humilis woven in there too.

Interesting, I didn't know that! Well, I guess that was solved relatively quickly! ;)

Would be awesome if they added in that if you dont fight but are at war you get different than when you are in the midst of battle.
Aswell if you are winning the war or not (war score).

List of song inspirations in preparation for the game's release. Here's hoping there will be more videos of Civ6 gameplays before release, so we can listened to the other themes.

I'd like the option of removing tracks I dont like, Iirc I heard kind of a remake of Civ4 intro, that sadly makes me cringe :-(

Not the most needed option though :-)

There's no remake, just the same guy doing an original theme piece for civ 6.

I happen to like sing-alongs, so I've compiled links to the complete themes of some of the civs.

America (Hard Times Come Again No More)

China (Mo Li Hua/茉莉花)

France (Le Tourdion)

Thanks for that!

They seem to have gone for a more folk-influenced soundtrack this time around - while Civ V's music was often inspired by folk melodies, they were turned into more classical pieces with an orchestra. Civ V's music was good, but it's a nice change of direction! I'm looking forward to hearing music from the rest of the civs!

It kinda reminds me of Civ IV Colonization's soundtrack actually.

My only irk is that the music plays disregard who you play as, I don't like that, I prefer my music to stick to who I'm playing as. Just because I met India, I don't want to hear India's music when I'm playing as the English. It's really interrupts immersion.

What I like from the music is they are not combining it into orchestral music again, instead a full ethnical instrumental. I must admit the Civ V orchestral was good, but there is a unique feeling for Civ VI Music.

Hopefully some guitar tunes for Spain.

Just imagine something like this ;)

Yeah, that's not very atmospheric, specially in the early game.

Unless they didn't implement it yet and it's a lot more subtle.

I know that each civ gets at least 2 or 3 individual pieces so that's comforting to know. I don't assume we will get several per civ, but they're also layered so each song has multiple variations.

But I really don't want to hear what Egypt should be hearing as America.

Egypt's theme is "El Helwa Di".

Nice catch! Looks like they went for a more modern basis for Egypt's theme.

Hopefully someone can identify the Japanese theme. I thought it sounded similar to Rokudan no Shirabe.
