Music you listen to while playing

Hype Machine (Hypem_com) with in-game audio muted.

Pandora is great for civ. Antonin Dvorak for peace. Philip Glass for war. Might need a few thumbs up and down for your tastes.

I like to listen to disney's Mine Mine Mine song from Pocahontas or Virginia Company.

Fits well for claiming Natural Wonders for Spain and converting all those savages to the faith oversees.

(Would fit America better, though.)

Black and death metal. Amps me up with energy while assigning my workers chores. What I look like at my desk while playing Civilization:

Joking aside, I listen to a lot of the in-game music since the game is still new to me. However, the music can get repetitive, especially on marathon. Occasionally I fire up a Civ4 playlist, listen to a movie soundtrack or classic list, or some melodic and chill Mediterranean techno. Love playing Civ4's industrial section during the appropriate era, though. I miss hearing DvorakSlavonic7 and Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade during that era.

Thinking about it now, I would say Civ5's soundtrack is adequate, but the best Civ soundtrack to date still belongs to Civ4. It did a good job at presenting the eras while its only drawback was a lack of diversity to represent the other cultures. That's the one leg-up Civ5 has on it and if Civ5 were to expand on the soundtrack by doubling its soundtrack in BNW, it could potentially supplant Civ4.

I'm not completely fond of the opera main theme in Gods & Kings. I replaced it with the vanilla theme, just swapping the files.
If I could be bothered, I would swap for other music more often. I liked the theme of The Legend of Grimrock when it got presented as a teaser before the game's release: http://www.grimrock.net/2012/02/03/creating-legendary-music-for-grimrock/. I wonder if that would go well with Civ - I haven't tried. I would only want to replace the main theme, keep the individual civ's music and the ambiance sounds; they do a lot for the game, but the main theme I find utterly replaceable.

I almost always play Civ while smoking. For some reason I prefer music without vocals when I'm high: classical, Disney soundtracks, ambient, dub reggae or idm.

Because vocals are annoying as hell when high :D Try dubsteb or electro if really high, kicks you out of your socks (high volume level advised)

Careful, Frollo, the mods may slap your wrists for that one, but I totally agree with you! Uppers are better than downers for managing a large empire :coffee:

I still don't quite get dub step, I mean, I understand it's a remix work, but still a lot of people say they like dub step without mentioning the actual work that's been remixed.

You like dub stepped... what song lol

I'm a huge fan of Drum 'n Bass and Breakbeat, would listen to that on occasion after heavy metal starts to sound like static and I start doing silly things like sending a general to attack a warrior :crazyeye: I like metal, but darn it I hate to admit that "they" were right, it's brain-melting.

im pretty surprised a lot of metal has already been mentioned. but then again i listen to a lot of hip hop. neither really scream 'typical civ music' to me, haha. i also have a few youtube playlists that i'll play sometimes, depending on the mood. i also need to queue up at least 3 hours of music. i dont play civ in short bursts.

game sounds are almost always off, but i need to get into the audio files and find the sound you get when someone beats you to a wonder. i want to make that my sound for getting texts on my phone, haha.

i tried stuff like lastfm and pandora and i dont like the lack of control. i tend to want specific albums and songs, not things loosely recommended because you like certain albums/songs. i have tried grooveshark and it was the better of those kinds of services, imo, plus it had a lot of unsigned artists promoting their stuff and hobbyists that like to mix music and do mashups.

Quarkspace, Secret Saucer, 35007, Samsara Blues Experiment... psychedelic space rock stuff nobody's heard of.

i just gave some of those a listen (quarkspace and secret saucer). i see the appeal during a civ game. they arent the same, but Monster Magnet has one track called Tab. it's 32 minutes long and 99% instrumental. their early albums had some good psychedelic rock but most had lyrics. but their instrumentals are pretty awesome too. i listen to it still fairly often.

i also listen to Akira (anime) soundtrack sometimes while playing civ.

Sometimes I listen to podcasts, sometimes I listen to soundtrack from The Hobbit, sometimes I listen to a mix of Hans Zimmer stuff. And then sometimes I listen to Childish Gambino. I'm not sure there's any particular reason for those choices.
