1940 - Preparations for Barbarossa

I play in Medium Level.
My main defence points will be: Leningrad, Pskov, Vilnius, Minsk, Brest-Litovsk, Lvov, Kijev, Chernovtsy and Dnepropetrovsk. These cities have great strategic value or additional protection (river square). The strongest defence forces will be in Kijev.
The strongest tank force, including T-34 and KV-1 tanks, is in Brest-Litovsk. Brest must withstand against enemy's direct assault.
Also Vilnius and Chernovtsy have many tanks. Most BT-7 tanks and NKVD Troops I place in Kijev. Areas forward of Kijev and Dnepropetrovsk will be killing grounds of German units. Bombers and fighters are placed in Kijev, Minsk and Leningrad.
In eastern cities I rushbuild libraries, foodshops and later factories to create strong industrial and scientific base there.

Foreign events:
All of France except Marseille, Toulon and Lyon are occupied by Axis. BEF still holds Dunkerque and Antwerpen. German paratroopers captured some cities in Scotland and Torshavn island.
In Norway British captured and hold Narvik.
In Balkans Greece took Albania.
In Africa nothing important happened.

1941 - Border Battles

In March I discovered Mobile Warfare II which allows T-34 tanks to build. Started mass producing them. By the end of year I had 21 T-34 tanks.
In June operation "Barbarossa" began.
Until August the front hold tight. I started hoping to hold all my cities until winter.
But in August Axis attacks got much stronger. Axis main armies operated against Brest-Litovsk, Lvov and Chernovtsy. Finnish army attacked Petrozavodsk.

In October my front collapsed and by November Chernovtsy, Brest-Litovsk, Kishinev, Odessa and Lvov fell. Coming of Winter in November saved my army from further losses.
General Zhukov arrived to Moscow in October. I sent him to strengthen defences in Minsk.

Foreign events:
Germany finished conquering France. BEF still managed to hold Antwerpen. Also Axis took all Scotland except Ullapool.
In April Axis started war against Jugoslavia and occupied it by September.
British took Palermo in Sicily.
In North Africa no changes.

Tommorow I will begin to play as soviets.
Red army defending against German killers.

Wow, you're the Marko Urm guy! Hi! Wicked scenario by the way. Don't worry, it's only a minor error. Why didn't you just substitute glacier for tropical terrain? Oh well. Great scenario.

I'm playing the Russians right now and barbarossa failed miserably! The only losses I have suffered is the fact Odessa is now a size 2 city, and so is Kijev.

Did I mention great scenario?

1942 - Battle for Ukraine

During winter I made several small counterattacks with T-34s and destroyed many Axis tanks.
By Spring all the front was heavily fortified again. I had many units in all frontline cities.
In April Axis started Summer Offensive. Main forces were directed against Pinsk and Kirovograd. My defence system remained unbreakable and counterattacks with T-34s took high toll from Panzers.
In August situation in Ukrainian Front got critical and in October there was catastrophe. Earlier I usually lost 4-5 units per month but in October Red Army casualities were as high as 32 units. In November I lost Rovno, Kirovograd and Kijev.

Winter gave me a bit breathing time but war situation is still grievous. German pressure is very strong along all the front. Riga, Vilnius and Sumy are going to fall. In Summer I had 37 T-34 tanks at one moment, in December only 12 are left.

What's your strategy for killing german air units? In fact, over 80% of my casualties are from air units. They are unstoppable! And seem to be infinite in numbers! And my plains suck (IL6), and I have only a dozen or so. When there's a bomber somewhere, I have to move around it, and expose my tanks. Help!

My early strategy for stopping the Luffwaffle was a lot of AA guns fortified in my cities. These would shoot down all their fighters, and could usually win against their bombers, (though I did lose a bundle.) This did limit my tank operations to quick strikes being launched from cities, and then quick retreat back into the cities for protection. I also massed units in one city, and then in one turn moved them all to attack another. I tried to minimize their outside exposure as much as possible, (unless there was good defensive terrain, like fortresses on mountains and such.)

Also, I never used I-16's for defense. Instead, I conserved them solely to attack bombers if I could catch them mid-air.
Also, keep the I-16's around, as later they will morph into P-38's, La-5's, and P-47's. Also, my P-38's were eventually morphed into Yak-9's.
