NBA Offseason/Labormagedon thread

Where do you get that number?

the so called "hard line" owners' offer

The owners are playing hardball because they can't afford to keep running things the same way.
The players are so ridiculously out of touch of reality. "They can't afford to work under the owners offer." Seriously? You are guaranteed millions of dollars for signing a contract! You don't even have to play well. Don't tell us that you can't work under those conditions!
Now the players will make nothing and will have legal fees to pay. Then they will end up accepting a deal which is worse then the one they rejected!

your inability to decipher spin is very amusing indeed

And why do you think the players will accept it?

I doubt the courts will rule in their favor and once they run out of money(which many of them will), they won't have a choice. The owners have all the leverage. Only a few players can get jobs overseas and those jobs pay a small fraction of what the NBA pays. Look what happened after the NHL lockout, the owners won, and I'm pretty sure they'll win here.

The owners can definitely afford it, they're freaking multi-billionares.

NBA teams are like playthings for these guys. If they think they'll be making a lot of money owning a team, they're morons.

There are owners(or owner) like Jerry Buss whose sole business is the Lakers.

I know there was at least 1 owner whose sole business is the team, I think it was Buss, but I'm not sure.

If it's his sole business then who gives a , the warriors sold for over 500 million dollars. Even if you are going to go broke to quote mj "just sell your team."

Doesn't matter, the owners are in control, so if they don't want to lose money, then that is how it will be.

The lakers aren't losing money either, not even with the highest payroll.
That's because they have a massive local media deal. LA also doesn't have the highest pay roll, the Knicks do.

Certainly being in one of the largest markets and a perennial contender doesn't hurt.

Pretty sure LAL is still the highest unless that has changed after this season, and I don't think they had any big contracts coming off the books. NYK is lower at 62 million. Donnie Walsh did a really good job clearing salary space is just a couple years.

You are right, I was thinking of highest income.

The owners and the players are business partners, that attitude is why we currently have a lockout.

If they don't want to lose money, they should stop throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at the likes of Rashard Lewis.

That's easy to say. Things like that happen because the system leads to everyone being over payed. Then, how come a very well run team like the Spurs is losing money? They don't have any horrible contracts.

I don't get why the players must demand large guaranteed profit when they don't take any financial risks at all while the owners are laughed off when they want some profit out of their substantial investment.

Stop trying to make the owners look like victims.

The players aren't taking "any financial risks at all"? Really? They lockout hurts them pretty badly financially.

Sports teams have never been bought for the profit they bring in while running the team. You can only get significant income owning a team if your team is in a big market.

Buying a sports team is for the extremely, extremely wealthy as a side venture. The profit from owning a team is selling it, which typically nets the seller a whole lot more money than they bought it for.

If the owners of teams in all these small markets thought they were going to be raking in the dollars, they're ignorant fools.

I could care less about the owners. I'm just stating the objective data of what is happening. Small teams losing tons of money and not being able to be competitive because of that is just not good for the league. The NBA needs all 30 teams to be sustainable to be a healthy league.

Certainly the players are taking a risk with the lockout. But in normal times, they don't have to take any financial risk. That gives them no power to demand the majority of the revenue.

I'm not saying the owners want to get rich off the teams, they just don't want operating at a loss every year.

Both sides certainly have their share in making the NBA what it is today. It's not an equal partnership though, the players have nothing to do with building the arenas, hiring coaches, managing referees, setting ways to get to other cities, setting up a scouting system to find new players, marketing the team to get people to the games, dealing with local TV stations for broadcasts, writing out the player contracts and scheduling the games.

The owners have nothing to do with you know actually playing the games, and the owners have very little to do with actually building arenas themselves. Perhaps we would have a bit more sympathy for their plight, if they, you know, actually built their own ing arenas; instead of stealing them.

I would really like to see the players try to start their own league, many of the players who have been in the league for a while probably have quite a bit of capital behind them such as K.G, Kobe, and Paul Pierce. While I know that this has very little chance of happening, I would love to see the owners sitting on valueless teams

Ah, so you believe the players could start their own league. That is totally preposterous. They couldn't even organize their own world tour, let alone a large operation like the NBA. They would have to set up all those things I mentioned and then get companies to buy in to advertising. You need both the players and infrastructure.

Why couldn't the players set up their own league? The player's weren't even the ones organizing their own world tour, that was being organized by a businessman. It's not as if the players league would just consist of players sitting around scheduling flights, calling up nike, and booking venues: it would simply be a league owned by the players. The front office would work for the players instead of the owners and the players would get 100% of the bri. Hell I imagine if the players started their own league the folks in the nba marketing department would be looking for jobs pretty fast.

I'd imagine this league would crash and burn as the players would sooner or later lock themselves out.
