NBA Offseason/Labormagedon thread

Why couldn't the players set up their own league? The player's weren't even the ones organizing their own world tour, that was being organized by a businessman. It's not as if the players league would just consist of players sitting around scheduling flights, calling up nike, and booking venues: it would simply be a league owned by the players. The front office would work for the players instead of the owners and the players would get 100% of the bri. Hell I imagine if the players started their own league the folks in the nba marketing department would be looking for jobs pretty fast.
Does that mean the teams are equally owned by all 12 players? The idea of the front office working for players is so crazy and ridiculous. How could a GM trade away their boss?
There is a ton of stuff that goes on behind the scenes that makes the NBA tick. Why do you think a league like the ABA closed? Not because of the players, they had some really good one like Rick Barry, Dr. J, Moses Molone, George Gervin just to name some, but because the NBA was set up better.

actually, it was because the aba failed to get a tv deal and lost the lew alcindor sweepstakes

thing 1 was mostly related to factors outside their control e.g. arledge being tight with the nba and college football pretty much dominating television, thing 2 literally slipped through their fingers

also, you should be ashamed for misspelling three of the four names of ABA stars (Rick Barry, Moses Malone, George Gervin); the latter two should go by "Moses" and "Ice[man]" respectively

LOCKOUT'S OVER, NBA back by Christmas!

He's still a decent player who would be a nice piece on the bench for a contending team. Orlando just happened to give him one of the worst contracts in the league.

He's a volume shooter taking shots away from the most famous volume shooter of all time.

I for one am excited about the Mavs-Heat rematch on opening day

an 18 OOC/48 IC split would favor the top of the eastern conference i think

And a short season favors the older teams that sorta ran out of gas last year in the playoffs. :D

not at all. there will be back to backs in the playoffs, and back to back to backs in the regular season.

i'm looking forward to back to back to backs*

*third game features KG going 2/14 and getting dunked on by mike dunleavy

I enjoy bad things happening to KG as well :D

No, i'm serious, although it will depend on how the offseason shakes out I guess. If Oden comes back to only be a 15 min a night defender, Portland will still have one of the best frontcourts in the NBA (Wallace, Aldridge, Batum, Camby, Oden). I think their ownership wants to be aggressive in the offseason with trades/free agents, since this year is really their best chance to compete in a while. With Roy off the books, they can make another run at a guard. Felton and Mathews aren't terrible in the backcourt either.

You know the Lakeshow, OKC and Dallas are going to be strong, but I could see Portland getting the three or four seed, if they're smart in their offseason, and if they can stay healthy (which they never can).

Also, reports are indiciating Boston offered Rondo and a pick for Chris Paul. New Orleans (obviously) said no, so Boston is trying to find a 3rd team. I bet we'll see several teams try to prevent Paul from becoming a Knick.

They will have their usual bad luck with injuries probably. Their offense isn't good enough I think. They can't score if you shut down Aldridge.
Felton and Mathews are perfectly capable scorers. Mathews averaged nearly 16 a game in his 2nd season in the league. I think they'll need more from Wallace, and a good season from Nolan Smith though.
Oden? I don't know if he'll play more than 3 games.

I'll take that over. The offseason reports on Oden have been very good. He's a pretty disciplined guy, and Portland apparently thought highly enough of him to resign him for another year. I don't think he'll ever be the 30 min a night starting center they wanted him to be, but he could be a lower min Camby 2.0, and that could make life really hard for LA, OKC or Dallas.

There should be a few attractive Free Agents around if people start cutting amnesty guys.

I think it'll also be interesting to see what Chicago does, since they seem to be one scorer away as well. I think they're the only team in the East that can really give Miami a run.
