ND1: Wonderless Terra

Grooooovy...

Roster [closed]:
1) Farae (?)
2) vovan
3) ndthsmdy (up)
4) hiob (on deck)
5) Jeff1787

I'm going to take this because I can play right now. Farae, since you got skipped you can try to jump in after, or you can just wait for it to roll back around to your normal slot.

(0) 725 BC: Looking good.

(1) 700 BC: Turfan Barracks>Keshik. Hinduism spreads to Beshbalik; I choose *not* to revolt.

(2) 675 BC: We receive word that a construction named "The Oracle" has been built abroad. It is apparently a fancy building that other civilizations call a "wonder." I scoff.

(3) 650 BC: Beshbalik expands. Karakorum Settler>Keshik. Beshbalik Worker>Archer.

(4) 625 BC: Beshbalik is now hooked up to the rest of the empire. I turn the City Gov off in Karakorum, because Avoid Growth doesn't give us extra shields.

(5) 600 BC: Red Dot is now known as Ning-hsia. Say that three times fast. It starts the obligatory Barracks.

(6) 575 BC: ...

(7) 550 BC: Iron Working>Fishing. We have two sources of Iron: one to the SW of Karakorum, and one under the Cottage to the NE of Turfan that vovan just built last turn.

Civ4ScreenShot0096.jpg

(8) 525 BC: Karakorum Keshik>Library. We are currently 7th place in gold, and running a deficit with 90% science. We need to cottage those floodplains by K.

(9) 500 BC: Confucianism is founded? As in, the Confucianism that comes with CoL? Whoa, maybe we're further behind in science than I thought.

(10) 475 BC: Fishing>Sailing. This is vetoable, but it's either Sailing, Mysticism, or 3 Classical techs that will take close to 20 turns to get to.

Napoleon is the one who founded Confucianism. He converts.

The Pyramids are built.

Notes:

Pretty much everybody asked me for Open Borders at some point. I granted them to Peter, Caesar, and Napoleon, because they're plenty far away. Under no circumstances should we give them to Asoka or the Incas.

One Worker is mining the Iron, one is connecting Besh's rice to the city, the other just arrived on the pigs by Ning. I wouldn't mind a couple more. We have a lot of land to cover and a lot of jungle to chop eventually. Karakorum needs Cottages. Besh and Ning could use some mines to boost our production.

We will need to boost finances and our tech rate soon. No point in building libraries anywhere besides Karakorum yet, because no other cities are generating any science.

We still do not have a diplomatic penalty with the Incas for close borders, but if we get one, we can mitigate it by converting to Hinduism. If we can get away with it though, not having a religion would make tech trading easier once we get to Alphabet.

And of course, we will be able to build Iron troops in five turns :hammer:

WHOA NELLIE

The Incas have settled that poc island off our eastern coast?!?!?!

Civ4ScreenShot0099.jpg

This is a big deal. It cuts into Pink Dot (on the hill two tiles W of that city) and makes taking them out militarily infinitely harder (as we can't do it until we are amphibious).

This also confirms that they are super starved for land in Inca territory, as they settled on the first one tile piece of land they could find instead of moving two tiles W and settling on our rightful Mongolian soil.

Here's my take on the situation (for what it's worth):

Let's get ready to take the Incas out. Karakorum and Ning are almost done with Worker and Barracks respectively; they can start building Axes and/or Swords.

Meanwhile, let's put cultural pressure on that Incan island city. Beshbalik is building a Settler due in like 12-13; there are pigs in jungle to the south of B that pasturing would speed up the process. Settle Pink Dot with that Settler and start a Library. It shouldn't take long given the fact that we are Creative to take over that city (which we can turn into a fishing town with a specialist, even though it will diminish Pink Dot's future potential).

Turfan is building a Lighthouse due in about 7; if it doesn't have a Barracks (don't know if it does) start it on that; otherwise, more Axes and Swords.

Being second place in Power isn't good enough if you're going for Conquest or Domination; we want to be FIRST :D And we need to take out a couple civs before they get Astronomy and start getting all hard to pin down on separate landmasses. Construction is definitely a research priority after Alphabet comes through.

1. 200 BC: Moving workers for new tasks.

2. 175 BC: Barracks completed in Ning-hsia. Now training swordsman. Worker completed in Karakorum, now training swordsman.

3. 150 BC: Cyrus wanted us to stop trading with the Russians, I declined.

4. 125 BC: Asoka wanted us to stop our deals with the French and again I declined.

5. 100 BC: Nothing to report.

6. 75 BC: Nothing to report.

7. 50 BC: Traded sailing to Arabia for mysticism. Traded horseback to Rome for mathmatics. Swordsman completed in Karakorum, started another. Lighthouse completed in Turfan, now trainig swordsman. Now researching metal casting.

8. 25 BC: Nothing to report.

9. 1 AD: Cyrus wanted us to go to war against the Russians and I declined. He may be trouble for us later.

10. 25 AD: Keshik produced in Turfan, now training swordsman.

***shouldn't we be working bigtime on Keshiks???

Definitely. We should be working big time on all military. We need to get started on the :hammer:

(Up to Farae and vovan if they want to start something, but if they haven't picked a fight with the Incas by the time my turn rolls around, *I'm* going to pick it :D)

Looks pretty nice. I have a couple suggestions here. :)

1. We need a road into the the Inca territory, especially since we have trees blocking the way.

I think the worker circled should get on with it, as soon as he is done with whatever it is he is doing now. :) This would expedite the process of :spank: delivery.

2. While I concur that we need to put pressure on O-town, I hate hate hate seeing  faces. So, I would argue we need to get the ivory resource first:

IBT-Round01-Ivory.jpg

I think the pink dot in that screenie is where we should send the settler from Besh. :)

Of course, if we do that, then we will probably miss the chance to flip the O-city culturally altogether, but the way I see it, if we take out all other Inca cities, then really they won't be a threat for the rest of the game any way. As long as we get some city down there with reasonable culture so they don't encroach on our territory too much, I think we should be ok, and we'll finish them off when we get a chance later on.

Plus, I am not sure we can culture-flip that city any way... We aren't going to be able to envelope it in our territory entirely, and any way, we must have it flip to us before we capture everything else and it becomes their capital (and seeing their desperation for more land, it can't take that long.) That and O-town's borders have already expanded once, and it has Inca's state religion. That all makes it that much harder to flip.

Vovan

PS: Another idea to consider: we could switch our state religion to Hinduism... That way, we would know what defences they have in the cities where they have Hindu, and I would guess it should be most of them, since they founded it and all. Then we can prepare accordingly.

Definitely agree with the road.

When is Ning going to expand again? It may be that we're going to get the Ivory in a couple of turns. Not that I'm opposed to settling Pink Dot anyway, just something to check into.

(Actually, a better question is why we didn't keep an eye on expanding into unhappiness in the first place...)

We *could* try to take O-town militarily; I haven't done any amphibious attacks in 4, but IIRC you can do it, there's just a combat penalty attached. I have no idea how bad it would actually be.

At the current rate of culture, the borders will expand in 12 turns (needs 36 more, current rate = 3cpt).

There's a 50% bonus to the defender for amphibious landing. It can be removed for exprienced units: Combat I -> Combat II -> Amphibious, and since we get Combat I free of charge, it's quite doable to get some units up to that. Also, you can't bombard city defenses from the ship, so the longer we wait, the more penalty we get from their culture. (Unless, ya know, we wait around for frigates, but who has the patience for that? :hammer: )
