Nero05: random deity

Pre-turn.

Rome is likely to be gone soon. Think we should get IW from them for gpt. There's a good chance we won't be paying gpt for the full 20.

Trade 128 gold + 3 gpt to Caesar for IW .
Look at where the Iron is!
ironNorth.jpg

and here
ironSouth.jpg

This could change the strategy for the war. North might be our best option to get the iron. OR we could still go South knowing that the Units we'll be facing will be spears and archers. I believe that Caesar's iron will be more than enough reason for Hiawatha to take Rome. So it won't be long before he gets the Iron there and will begin making Swords in the main portion of his territory.

I'm going to stop right here for discussion as this changes things. In my opinion, we should take Mauch Chunk first, then take our army across our territory to continue the campaign to the South.

Agreed, stiop science switch to warriors, looks like we got enough archers to take city, then upgrade warriors and move south. Hoping Rome will hold as long as possible.

[smug mode]Well i was wrong about there being no iron on the island... But I was right when I said I didnt think the Iro's had iron... AND when i said we should attack north first [/smug mode] ;)
Seriously though thats great news for us

Wait a minute... are you sure trading gpt was wise? If Rome dies before the 20 turns are up then our rep gets shot to pieces.

Oh ok sorry... I was sure I read somewhere though that you get a rep hit if you are paying gpt to a civ and they are destroyed... oh yeah it was in 'Sid Vicious and the Magnificent 7+1' when they made the town they could protect and gave it to babylon so that they wouldnt be destroyed as they were paying gpt for a tech... is that only in conquests that is the case or Vanilla as well?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's the same for all versions. Granted, I've only been playing a short time (PTW from June - October, and C3C since October) but I've used the guidelines in Microbe's above linked article with success in both versions.

Speaking of C3C. How goes the hunt for Mac Complete?

OK. Pre-turn (cont'd)

Set research to 0. Lux slider currently at 0. 28 gold in treasury with 6 gpt coming in taxes.
Change Archer builds in York, London, & Notttingham to warriors (had a tough decision because we're wasting 2 shields each in London & Nottingham, but we'll be ahead by one turn by switching to warriors now).
Begin to move archers toward Mauch Chunk

Hit enter

IT
Caesar demands tribute!!

rometribute.jpg

This has to be a bluff, they're about to be crushed by the Iroquois. Their units will never make it through Iroquois territory if it isn't a bluff. Reply "Take your empty threats elsewhere."

emptythreat.jpg

London & Nottingham: Warrior -> Warrior

Turn 1 - 1225 BC
Move archers toward Mauch Chunk. War in 2 turns.
Move archer off of guard duty of Settler, and send Settler toward York. Mauch Chunk will be our target, and at size 1 is likely to be autorazed. We can use the Settler there.

IT
An Iroquois warrior checks outside of St. Regis.

Turn 2 - 1200 BC
Archers in place for war next turn. Will be going after Mauch Chunk with 6 archers.
We won't have iron hooked up for a while, Mauch Chunk isn't even roaded. We desperately need more workers. Only have 2 right now. Maybe we'll get a slave or two.

IT
Iroquois are building The Great Lighthouse. There's one productive city that won't be building units.

Turn 3 - 1175 BC
The war begins. Much to the dismay of our Foreign Advisor

renegpeace.jpg

And the joy of our Military Advisor

iroquoisscum.jpg

Move stack next to Mauch Chunk. No improvements at all made to it's territory.

backtoarchers.jpg

Warriors due in York, London, & Nottingham next turn. Will let them complete then switch back to archers. We can get a few warriors some time before the iron is going to be hooked up. Worker roading incense hill has finished. Moving him North to put our entire workforce of two into getting iron hooked up.

IT
York: Warrior -> Archer
London: Warrior -> Archer
Nottingham: Warrior -> Archer
Hastings: Rax -> Archer

Turn 4 - 1150 BC
The attack on Mauch Chunk
1st Archer dies redlining a vet Spear
2nd Archer loses 1HP beating a reg Spear
3rd Archer loses 2HP beating a vet Archer, revealing the redlined spear.
4th Archer needs one shot ...

chunkdestroyed.jpg

Having the settler pays off.

IT
Warrior out of St. Regis looks like he's making a beeline for our Settler.

Turn 5 - 1125 BC
Vet Warrior dies redlining the Iroquois Warrior. 3 HP vet archer gets redlined finishing him off.

IT
No sign of anything from Iroquois territory. Everything they have must be down South going after Rome.

Turn 6 - 1100 BC
Moving Archers South

IT
Hiawatha serves up a couple of slaves

iroslavefarm.jpg

Plus another lone spear.

Turn 7 - 1075 BC
Canterbury (warrior) founded on rubble of Mauch Chunk.
Consolidating stack in London & drawing our future slaves in like a fly to a spider.

IT
Hiawatha must have only been interested in the iron because the Settler pair turns tail.
He's taking a purely defensive posture as the lone spear moves toward Cattaraugus.

Turn 8 - 1050 BC
Stack together again in London, and partially healed.

IT
The lone spear pops out of the fog N of Cattaragus. Apparently to pillage the incense.
London: Archer -> Warrior
Nottingham: Archer -> Warrior

Turn 9 - 1025 BC
Move archer stack to incense in preparation for attack on Cattaraugus, and to keep the spear from pillaging.
Our workforce completes the road to Canterbury and moves to iron mountain.

IT
York: Archer -> Warrior
Iroquois spear moves N

Turn 10 - 1000 BC
Move stack of 4 vet archers + 1 reg archer to tile directly N of Cattaraugus. 2 vet archers move out of London to incense hill.
Workers begin roading iron mountain. Iron in 5 turns.

Our current Military consists of:
7 Warriors (0/3/4/0)
8 Archers (0/1/7/0)
and one reg spear

There is 130 gold in the treasury & we are making +12 gpt. We will have enough gold to upgrade 5 warriors one turn after the iron is hooked up.
We sorely need workers.
We seem to be benefiting from War Happiness.

Good stuff McLman, lets hope Rome has a couple of legions and can hold out long enough for us to kick the Iro all over the place (before they even get iron). Nero's up I believe, then me. I guess the Iroquois will make as good a place as any start building the British Empire... Rule Brittania!

Oh well if the worst comes to the worst we can always just kill everybody off before we meet ne1 else n that'll save our rep ;)

Not well I asked the local games store and they told me they had Civ IV (but thats PC only neway) and didnt no anything at all about a mac version of Civ Complete. Although they did offer to sell me Civ 3 complete (for PC) at half price if I bought Civ IV at the same time... :rolleyes:

Great news, was afraid it would take more effert as the city was on a hill.
Will play later today.

Pre-turn Thoughts

No MM to be done, everything in order. Bad news is Rome is gone so the Iro can have iron in 10 if they are smart (actually less if they build a colony...), also they already have philo so no possible trade there and the iro will pay WM and 20gold for peace or 40 gold. Prepare for the charge of 2 MW's.

IBT - The first MW dies for loss of 1 hp to sword, the other kills a sword without being injured.

Turn 1 - New sword out of hastings attacks the settler pairs and kills the spear without taking harm. Last sword in London kills a MW without being injured and is promoted to elite, but a Vet MW is now there as well as 2 archers. Move sword out of Nottingham to support London. Check peace, could now get WM and 62 gold or 80 gold. Getting Rome is only rated 'doubtful' worker has finished mining grassland sw of Cantebury so send him to mine tile ne of Hastings and finishes this turn (combined worker turns). The two slaves are sent to the grassland N of Hastings. Calculate risk and if I end now the archer could potentially kill our sword in the open and then the MW could possibly capture london... decide its not worth the risk and make peace for 80 gold. With a bit of luck we'll be able to break it without getting a rep hit. Switch York to Settler (due in 2) to grab the spot to the north. Not really sure where to go from here. atm the risk of losing London is big so peace was a necessity, otoh they will have iron soon and we will be in trouble then... possibly best bet will be to go for masonry straight up after philo, maybe at max and then try and get maths as quick as possible for cats. With cats i would feel a lot better about taking the iro on but they'll be some turns away yet. Guess I will just go for more swords and look to take on the Iro in bite-sized wars might be best but as well as the settler in York I switch nottingham to a galley... we need more contacts and I'm prepared to risk a galley. Anyway after much deliberatin I hit enter.

IBT - The Iro withdraw, Washington finishes the lighthouse.

Turn 2 - garrison swords in largest towns for mp atm, worker moves.

IBT - nothing visible

Turn 3 - Settler finishes set build to sword due in 10, growth in 4. Sword reaches nottingham for mp so i can take off tax collecter and prevent starvation, do the same in London. Send 1 of Canterbury's warriors to hastings to prevent riot next turn.

IBT - nuthin

Turn 4 - London: Sword --> Sword. Ahk this is nervewracking. I know that every turn we delay is another turn that the iro are pulling away from us. Unfortunately the grand sum of our armies is 4 swords and 5 warriors... Shuffle some mp around to better spots. 1 worker and 3 slaves 1 tile s of hastings have finished roading and mining so send them to gold hill se of london to road and mine.

IBT - Iro settler pair appears, elite MW moves next to our border

Turn 5 - Found Coventry warrior --> rax. No other possible moves

IBT - MW moves away as does settler pair... then THIS happens
egypt1hc.jpg

Turn 6 - Philo comes in, set to masonry at 70% so we keep making gpt, due in 8. Contact Egyptians, they don't have Philo! They are willing to offer Masonry and 17 gold and their WM for Philosophy and our WM. Also looking at the diplomacy screen they have 5 cities inc. capital while we have 6 :D, also they have 7 furs available for trade. WM reveals an island that the Iro have already taken. Maths would be in 19 at 70%... after a bit of thinking I decide we need cats, and we needed them yesterday so push science up 10%, we can then get it in 17 at the loss of just 1gpt. The WM from Egypt reveals ocean tiles all around apart from the iro island, atm its difficult to tell how large it is but it seems small and is on the wrong side of the peninsula so I decide to change the galley build (1 turn left) to a sword. Set London's build to walls.

NOTE: Iro gained CoL in the IBT, according to the histograph we have about a 5th of the culture of the iro and about a 6th or 7th of the egyptians. We also have less than a third of the power fo the Iro, slightly less than egyptians and have made a decent dent in the Iro's power graph since 848 bc when we were at our lowest point for some time.

IBT - Not a lot, York grows and our income rises from -1gpt to 0gpt.

Turn 7 - Nottingham: Sword --> Sword, Hastings: Sword --> Sword. Just realised the downside of Egypt showing up, now we cant break peace without ruining our rep. My understanding of it is that peace treaties dont damage ur rep if broken unless it has a gpt deal. Now seeing as how we got something straight up (80 gold) and its a 20turn deal if its broken do we lose our rep? Something to think about as I think we NEED war soon. Iro still dont have Iron hooked up but that won't last.

IBT - Border with Iro now clear of all units. Cantebury grows, rax now due in 9.

Turn 8 - London: Walls --> Sword, we now have 6 swords with 3 more due in 4 and a fifth in 5 turns. That would give us 10. We currently have 4 garrisoned at london as its on the border. MM Cantebury to give us rax in 6.

IBT - Nothing visible happens

Turn 9 - Check the iro iron again and Veii has grown culturally. They can now road the iron and away they go :sad: thats v. bad. Worker and 2 slaves start to mine hill ne of York.

IBT - Maths drops by a turn, guess either egypt or iro started researching it. Workers finish mining gold hill se of London.

Turn 10 - Workers on gold hill start to road, finish in 3 turns. No other possible moves.

Post-Turn Thoughts
I feel really quite poor at the end of that turnset. Made contact with Egypt and got us something for peace with Iro but the gap between us and the Iro grows bigger. The Iro will have iron soon and they may actually have it now, I'd need an updated territory map to tell but i dont think they do. Maths is due in 14 and we desperately need something to build besides swords, but we cant afford to build any city improvements atm. Some of you might wonder why iv gone with a regular warrior at coventry and havnt joined it by road, the reason is we cant afford to have our swords on mp duty, we need them out stomping on the iros asap and so i needed something weaker and cheaper for mp duty.
Heres a picture of the world at the end of the turnset.

Besides it doesn't matter if they have swords. Prefer facing a sword over an MW, those are hard to kill because they keep running away. Maybe we should build a chariot, for kill 1HP MW's.
