NES World/Regional Maps Requests Thread

Blame Google. :)

Oops, wrong thread

Double posty goodness.

So, I recently finished this up, figure I'd see if it gave people epilepsy or something. I think it works a little better than the last time this sort of thing was seen. Anyway:

LEGEND
• Dark Blue is the ocean. Bet you didn't know that.
• Black is land. Bet you didn't know that either!
• Blue lines are rivers and coast.
• Thick / glowing colored lines are national borders.
• Thin colored lines are designators for (in this case) economic divisions or administrative divisions.
• Colored numbers designate the statistics of each division. These can be made smaller or turned into letters or whatever.
• White lines are roads. White circles are cities. The inner dot designates ownership via national color. The capital's circle is also the national color, in addition to its dot.

Also, layering is really handy for maps, if you didn't happen to know that. It lets one easily recast map information, for example:

Spoiler :

Zones.gif

You could do something interesting like slip a geography or terrain type map underneath the city/road or administrative layers and normally leave them at 0% opacity to produce different informational maps. Handy feature.

Cool, but that cities need to stand out more. The ones connected to roads are hard to see.

Symph, what program do you use to make these maps?

Photoshop 7.0 and MS Paint. Paint's easier for doodling around in, Photoshop for spiffy effects and layering everything together. Ideally as much as possible is done in Photoshop since it saves effort, but sometimes I prefer to be inefficient.

That'd be difficult without filling them in. Maybe put the national color in the black square in the center. Harder to see near the glow that way though. I guess it could be made smaller.

Just make them and the roads different colors

I would like to Mod sometime not too long from now (and I have abandoned the other idea or at least put it on backburner). I need to get a program for maps that
a) can do large images (the program I use only can go to 2000x2000, and a standard NES map is much bigger)
b) runs on Mac.
c) if possible, I'd LIKE to do layers, though it isn't necessary
any suggestions?

My main problem with that is that the current color setup already denies two shades of blue, black, and white... adding a fifth color to the "cannot use" pile seems kind of excessive. I guess they could be a gray or something though.

Can't help you there.

Why not use the gray I use for trade routes (see here)?

Agreed; a light gray is a superior color for a trade route... however, on Symphony's map, given the blackness contrasting with lighter colors, it might not be such a good idea.

a) Microsoft Pain
b) Can't help you
c) Gimp, its free and Erik Mesoy will love you for getting it.

Revised "StrategicSym Ver. 1.0" as below:

The gray is at 60% on the hue-scale (153/255 RGB). It can be made brighter or darker easily now that they're differentiated but I think it's fairly visible even against the black. Numbers also changed to letters; if dawned on me that if troops are going to be displayed on the map as numbers it makes sense to use letters for zones instead.

The capitals are bloody difficult to find. That's all I can say in criticism. Other than that, it looks and functions well.

Probably doesn't help that the Green country has no capital in that copy. Fairly simple solution is to give capitals white insets instead of black, I think. If that's not enough can switch them to white exteriors like the rest. If nobody else has qualms I guess it's operational.

[EDIT] Switched it out; capitals have white insets and white exteriors; they're somewhat brighter than every other city, so should be easier.

That would explain it. I spent about 2 minutes looking for Green's capital. :p

Much better with the gray roads.

Would someone who isn't going to play in my next NES make me a full-sized map?

I want either a completely random map or one with the Mediterranean area kept as normal but everything surrounding it different. Either way, mountain ranges should be shown on the map.

Please PM me the map rather than posting it. Thanks. :)
