NES World/Regional Maps Requests Thread

No. Not up rivers either unless they form the border.

Ta daa! Africa and surrounding islands are complete!

Several of the countries in West Africa having almost black borders is kinda trippy, but they are there. Border for the eastern half of Sudan and Egypt is still white. But that's all easy to fix, and it looks good on a cursory inspection. Good work.

Also, Dis: ArcGIS Desktop 9.1.

If you'd been paying attention, you might know it was part of a world map.

It has begun.

Much neatness. Can I see source images? Do you want any sort of help?

No (or, at least, not immediately), if only because I don't wish to saddle the upload function with multi-mb picture files, and not yet, since not that much has been accomplished yet.

You could just create a GooglePages account and upload them there...

Although possessing several Gmail accounts makes that fairly easy, I'd sooner just track down the links.

Topographic and Contour. Both are very large. You were warned.

Current problem is that the Contour (which is what's really important) only goes to 57° N or S. The Topographic goes to 70° N and S, but there's nothing much of note north or south of about those latitudes. Although it is possible to take the Contour's polar projections, and through various trickeries (converting from polar to rectangular) appendage them to the main body of the Contour map, they do not use Mercator projection, and distort (which is why the Topographic is mostly there; fact-checking) over short distances, plus they're really grainy in comparison.

Plus I'm working out the scale, still, since I'd like it to be somewhat intelligent. Then I intend to make a new map presuming there's enough water on Mars to fill up Vastitas Borealis to about 2km below datum and adding some lakes here and there when prudent. The main bulk of the contours aren't really necessary since you can just point players at a map of Mars if they try and do something silly like cross Valles Marineris or something, and they'd be sort of strange looking and cluttery.

I think fixing the equatorial circumference at 2,668 pixels (21,344km / 2668pixels = 8km/pixel) would be fine and dandy. That would make it about the same size as the "North King / Jason" Earth map. An Earth map of corresponding scale would be 5,009 pixels, which although it would be fairly large, might not be so bad considering Earth could use a bit more detail anyway.

On another note entirely, an interesting effect I discovered while playing around in Photoshop:

Despite being somewhat harder to compensate changes for compared to solid colors, it looks much better too.

So I blew all those hours doing Africa for NOTHING? AAAAAGGHH!!!

I WILL NEVER HELP ANYONE AGAIN AS LONG AS I LIVE!!!

I didn't say I picked one over the other. I'm just noting. :p It's much more difficult to discern similar colors with that method as well. Some kind of combination might work. Example:

Regarding retooling Earth to a larger scale, that's a ways off anyway.
