NESLife attempt #3

Slithery: North King
Evolved from: Wavy
Genes (9): Plankton Eating x3, Swimming x2, Vibration Sense x1, Eyes x1, Pressure Resistance x1, Cold Resistance x1
Description: Much like the Wavy, but adapted to cold waters and more efficient at eating plankton.

->

Squiggly: North King
Evolved from: Slithery
Gene added (max 2+1 bonus): Mass Reproductionx1, Jawsx1, Communal Behaviorx1
Gene removed (optional, max 2):
Description (optional): The Slithery had been queen of the seas for millions of years, but the mass extinction, though survivable by the species, proved a challenge. To compensate, individuals who could replace lost populations faster thrived, and reproduction became far more efficient. They also swam in vast schools: millions of Squigglies at a time; this meant that they could aid each other in the hunt for food, in avoiding predators, and in general survival. Their more sophisticated mouthparts in the form of jaws allowed more efficient feeding and some amount of defense against the less powerful predators. The jaws also elongated the head, so that the Slithery looked more like an eel than a maw on a stick.

If someone else wants to go for making Amphibians, that would be great. I just don't figure the same lineage would appear from the same species.

Did the Early Selatran go extinct along with the mature one?

Yes, im afraid so :( Lack of prey wasnt good for high-maintenance flyers like that. The Flying Form survived, but only just.

Splime said:
Daft, why do you always have to find some way to kill off my species? It seems that every other update my species go extinct...

Im trying to be as realistic as possible, which involves being brutal with what lives and what doesnt :(

North King lost a whole line of evolution, at least you still have the base creatures left! And you noticed I gave you a bonus tho for the ice dibbler :)

Id like everything to survive all the time, but then theres little point in the game if theres no risks... And nothing lasts for ever anyway. As i said i will make a 'hall of fame' kinda thing at some point.

Checking in from Hope, BC!

@Lord_Iggy, I decided against complex muscles requiring a separate gene. This can be taken into account by various movement genes and by overall metabolism etc.
Okay. What gene is Fast Metabolism? It's not on the list, though I can easily enough tell its meaning.

@Neverwonagame3- Yay! It's the first time someone else other than Daft has evolved off one of my critters!
Also, not sure if the map and these new style graphics will ever appear again. It was a fun experiment but it did take more work (though suprisingly not that much more).
I love the new backgrounds, but I think the other things were better old-school.

So I vote that you keep the new backgrounds, but bring other things back to normal.

And as for the map- I have an idea: Separate continents can have separate environments which may only last for a few eras. IE: South America became one, which allowed the Terror Birds to evolve, until it rejoined the main environment and was overwhelmed by fitter predators.

However, I think it would be easier to just have a few biomes: Tundra, Desert, Plains and Forests. In addition to the current naval regions. The map isn't critical to the game.

To summarize this long statement- Keep things the way they were, but keep the snazzy new backgrounds.

I feel sorry for North King, but he seems to be taking it well.

On a related note- will the Arthropods inherit the land?

awesome update! Damn my predator died...

It's seems that more inside the lands that are many plants and no predators... Maybe I should try and go there :p

Just a little note on the Scensurytes- They were supposed to have three eyes. Just to create something unique and common, to differentiate this world from ours.

Other than that though, the look great! :goodjob:

Stealthrex : Lord_Iggy
Evolved from: Deathrex
Gene added (max 2+1): Chromatophores, Meat Eating, Swimming
Gene removed (optional, max 2):
Description (optional): Following the First Great Extinction, the surviving Deathrexes radiated into several roles. While some opted for numbers and simple brute force, others took a more subtle path. Their history of passive camouflage has become one of active camouflage. New skin cells, named chromatophores, allow the Stealthrex to blend in with its background even better than it used to. This is useful both for avoiding threatening visual hunters, and for near-invisibly following its prey. These Stealthrexes are slightly more efficient hunters, and better swimmers than their Deathrex ancestors. They are hard to see for all, other than their own species and the War Deathrexes, who they can generally outswim and outpace.

After the mass extinction the Finners somehow succeeded and survived. But they weren't the only ones to survive. It seemed as if the seas were still not so empty and with food being exceptionally needed now that food was scarce The Finners had to adapt into something a little different.

As they pushed themselves across the seas, wherever they can survive some finners begun to swim in the rivers and soon. using this shortcut, begun to be more inland. The outer lands were full of dangerous plants but inland, that was a much more calm area.

And so , in the rivers there was much less food for the finners, and a few begun to crawl out to eat plants that sit right next to the water. Many died trying but some survived. Some survived thanks to a gene that begun to appear in them. The new gene allowed water to be kept for longer inside of their bodies. While this new breed couldn't live or even stay out of water for long, or it would suffocate, it did get new eating grounds close to the water that no other Finner or sea creatures could get.

As evolution moved on, the new succefull gene was rewared and continued to become better. A new breed of Finners appeared on the scene.

Thick Finner : erez87
Evolved from: Prime Finner II
Gene added (max 2): thick skin x2 (or water retention x2 otherwise)
Gene removed (optional, max 2): plankton eating x1
Description (optional): The Thick Finner is an evolution of the Prime Finner II. It is well suited to make casual jumps out of the waters of rivers to eat on the algae inland and than return.

OOC-I'll try to take on the lands than :p Now that NK will rule the seas again...

 Aaaaawesome update! I love those graphics, so much depth! I understand if you don't want to keep it up though, but every now and again... ;)

I'm also quite pleased to note that every single one of my plants survived the culling. Even the Cryoalgae are still alive! :D Pershaps not very surprising though, there was always a skew towards too many creatures and too few plants, and I guess the Cryoalgae are perfect for this new environment.

My condoleances to those who lost creatures or entire lines. :salute:

New organism to come soon. :)

It is very tempting to add more and more features and forgo the feeding genes, but I must make the Shellster genus strong. While not the only ancestor of the Shellster, personally it seems as though the Rockster became its own new genus while the Shellster Flutuan and Flutuapod kept the basic floating, shelled-ball-of-spikes creature. Assuming survival I will keep using the Shellster genus until it seems as if it has been altered enough to seem as a new genus itself. Then I'll figure out a new name for the new genus. But for now:

Shellster Flutuapod: tuxedohamm
Evolved from: Shellster Flutuan
Genes (10): Drifting x2, Plankton Eating x3, Spikes x1, Shell x2, Tentacle x1, Smelling x1
Description: The Shellster Flutuapod has developed a tentacle to grasp onto plants and a basic sense of smell to detect when it is near a plant to grasp or when a predator is near and it needs to retract its tentacle back into its tough, spiked shell.

-->

Shellster Planktovorapod : tuxedohamm
Evolved from: Shellster Flutuapod
Gene added (max 2): Plankton Eating x2
Gene removed (optional, max 2):
Description (optional): Only the strongest survive, and for the Shellster Flutuapods that meant only those that could get the most out of the plankton they ate. This meant that by the end of the mass extiction, a new species had developed that could filter out even harder to aquire plankton.

How many genes of water retention would it take to really start "living" on land?

Also how are crawling and walking working together? If I want to add walking to something should I leave the crawling or will that just be an energy waste?

Actually, changed my mind on my previous evolution...

Dibbler-Ice: Splime
Evolved from: Dibbler
Genes (3): Crawling x1, Cold-Resistant x1, Eating Dead Things x1
Description: The new form of Dibbler, Dibbler-Ice, has evolved to survive warm and cold waters alike, maximizing its range of survivability.

-->

Dibbler-Ice 2.0: Splime
Evolved From: Dibbler-Ice
Genes Added: Crawling x1, Complex Stomach x1, Poison Coating x1
Genes (6): Crawling x2, Cold-Resistant x1, Eating Dead Things x1, Complex Stomach x1, Poison Coating x1
Description: The Ancient Dibbler-Ice, ancestor of the Zibbler-21, has mutated into another species, the Dibbler-Ice 2.0. It can crawl faster, and has a more efficient stomach. In addition, its exterior is coated with a poison (which it is immune to) so that if another species tries to eat it, it will be poisoned by the skin. The poison is especially effective in the cold, where organisms need more energy to keep warm.

I think you can have both. Walking is a longer, more upright, and faster gait. I assume it's just an improvement on crawling, which you might give up later.

And my Scensurytes and Respirytes live on land just fine with only Water Retention x1, though they need to be slightly damp, and need water to lay their eggs.

 Aaaaawesome update! I love those graphics, so much depth! I understand if you don't want to keep it up though, but every now and again... ;)

Yeah, I can't believe that I didn't lose any evolutionary lines. I'd given up on the Deathrex' chances, but its relative simplicity and lack of vision was its salvation.

Would anyone like to evolve some more trees? My Scensurytes can pollinate them. I scratch your back, you scratch mine, and all that.

I've edited my new evolution, after some consideration.

@Splime- Awesome chart, as always.

Hi, i been watch this for a while and finally decide to give it myself.

Doubler: Shadowbound
Evolved from: Doodler
Genes (10): Crawling x1, Plant Eating x1, Flesh Eating x1, Complex Stomach x2, Claws x1, Cold Resistance x1, Communal Behaviour x2, Brain Power x1
Description: Faced with a threat to its survivial, the Doubler evolves ways to match the threat from its larger evolutionary cousins. A more complex nervous system and a slightly-less-primitive brain allow it to react better and to consider its next move. Working together with its fellows, it will drive anyone not a member of its herd from choice feeding grounds.

to

Tripler: C&cciv3
Evolved from: Doubler
Gene added (max 2): Crawling +1, Eyes +1
Gene removed (optional, max 2): [reminder: leave at least one gene for feeding/getting energy!]
Description: With them evolving simple eyesight it allows them to response to threats quicker and if needs be run away quicker on their stronger legs.

And as for the map- I have an idea: Separate continents can have separate environments which may only last for a few eras. IE: South America became one, which allowed the Terror Birds to evolve, until it rejoined the main environment and was overwhelmed by fitter predators.

If this is possible, I wholeheartedly support it.

I feel sorry for North King, but he seems to be taking it well.

On a related note- will the Arthropods inherit the land?

Well, I was evolving my creatures as fast as possible, because I knew the extinction was coming. It was a race against comets, and creatures usually lose those. :p

As to arthropods: gah! Please, no.

I'm not as fast as Splime, despite having to add only two plants to this chart for the new update. Btw, a Splime, is that a hybrid between a Spongeita and a Slimeotron? ;)
Spoiler :

Excellent, the charts are complete...

I was just thinking, it would be awesome if we could make multiple evolutions per turn... If only there was a way to do that without making Daftpanzer's load insane.

I didn't really like the blur effects.

@NK- Well, the ever-successful finners are moving onto land, so the Arthropods have competition again already.
