NESLife attempt #3

you could always PM daft your creature.. i did initially.

Planktonus Maximus: Slavic Sioux
Evolved from: Plankton
Gene added (max 2): Plankton Eating 1x, Mass Reproduction 1x
Description (optional): The Planktonus Maximus is a very simple animal that feeds entirely on the plankton that drifts by and has no control over it’s movement and goes wherever the water’s currents go. It’s also a very prolific breeder and reproduces very frequently as so it can compete and survive the rigors of nature.

@Charles Li, welcome to the game! Im afraid your moss cant live on land without 'water retention', though it could be a simple kind of underwater plant for now.

@Slavic Sioux, im afraid your creature would need a 'drifting' gene even for just floating around, otherwise it is pretty much immobile (like a plant, sponge or reef etc). But you can have 3 genes for a new species (2 limit is only for evolving from an existing species) so i could add that in.

@Splime, great work once again! Thanks very much, though im afraid the charts are getting too big for me now. Im on 56k, and the server likes to stop sending the pictures when they are only half done, and i cant seem to get them even by refreshing :(

@all, thanks for the feedback, looks like most people support the rule about needing permission to evolve from other people's creatures, so i think this will come into play next turn.

If you must do this, perhaps set a 'patent' which expires after a time limit.

^ I like that idea. Perhaps anything more than 2 updates old should be free for anyone to evolve from?

so when is the deadline?

No fixed deadline schedule for this... There is a couple more days to post, at least. I will give 24 hours warning before i stop taking any more evolutions.

Really, you should use the update(edit button)for the genes, i don't really understand where stinging tenticles come from

Im game with the idea that we can only evolve our own or NPC species after this coming update. Makes you work a bit harder now to keep your own stuff alive. Guess its back to my Terradids again, they are starting to get hunted more now so time for them to fight back maybe! Probably get around to posting my new evolution tomorrow sometime.
Really though, with no rivals, I can't hunt you to extinction. My guys in the area would have a population crash, and yours would recover.

A meeting between enemies:

As the Terradid was starting to harvest some of the Terranoplang's fruit; which was a very nice treat as the Terradid's where finding out, it sensed more than heard (lacking any type of hearing at this stage) something hiding out in the forest of Big Fanel's that where surrounding the Terradid. Packing away the last of the piece of fruit it was munching on the Terradid turned around to face whatever was out there.

Since hunters had been more aggressive and able to follow the Terradid's into what they considered their home turf, this particular Terradid readied it claws and backed itself against one of the nearby Fanel's to protect its back.

Out of the forest emerged the feared Venatoryte. These feared creatures where the deadliest of the hunters that had arrived on shore. The Terradid having just eaten a large meal was in no shape to "run" farther inland where the Venatoryte couldn't follow and thus prepared for the fight that must come.

The Venatoryte seemed to be alone which was a good thing for the Terradid, this was something it could handle indead. As the Venatoryte was used to creatures running or cowering from its fearsome presence it was not expecting the sudden rush of the Terradid. The Terradid using its full crawling power to give it a short burst into the reach of the Venatoryte it was able to get under its arm and avoid the first swing of the Venatoryte's mighty claws and latch onto its leg and clamp down. The Venatoryte really did not like this and gave out a mighty scream. The leg now useless collapsed under the Venatoryte's weight and it came crashing down. Seeing the Venatoryte helpless the Terradid promptly moved out of the range of the predator's claws and started its trek back inland to safer lands.
Nice story. Though they're called Dolosytes now, the direct descendents of the Venatorytes now. Dolosytes are smarter and more energetic, so they might try things like tossing other arthropods onto rocks to kill them, or things like that.

I'll probably start working on charts soon. Just give me some time.
All hail!

Can i play? i want to know morea bout the genes of teh animals already here

Here gos

New animal

photosynthesisx1
massproductionx1
Hibernating sporesx1

and it is called.... simple-Moss!

A new Invasion of land with the simple moss! These are hard to scrape off os stones to eat!
You'd probably be better off evolving from an already existant animal, IMHO.

Clepsuryte: TerrisH
Evolved from: Scensuryte
Genes (15): Crawling x2, Eating Dead Things x1, Plant Eating x1, Complex Stomach x1, Exoskeleton x1, Communal Behaviour x1, Claws x2, Water Retention x1, Lungs x2, Cold Resistance x1, Eyes x1, Climbing x1
New Genes: Water Retention x1, Cold Resistance x1
Description: Intense competition on land has led to a development of a further extension of the family Scuteridae. Forced into a new niche, one group of Respirytes began to use their sharp leg-claws to climb the numerous trees, plants, and rock faces present in their environments- thus gaining both protection and access to the richest parts of plants. Eventually, as their Habitat of Choice expanded, they to evolved to follow them, becomign partialy resistant to the cold, and better evolved to survive in dry weather.

OOC: this okay Iggy? no major changes, just making sure they can follow the Fanal's to cover more area.
Yeah, this is fine. I'll say now (and possibly repeat) that people do not need my permission to evolve things from my species. By the way, what's the root word of Clepsuryte?

Anyway, you may want to change the description a bit more.

DEFINTE.

How else will there be branches in evolution? Show that different paths can be taken etc.

<--- is annoyed noone has ever tried to evolve my own creatures
Definte? Is that define, as in explain my argument more, or definitely, as in you expressing your agreement.

I am rejoining. I have a terrible idea, that will make certain people hate me, yet am undecided. however, if I post TOO early it will be easy to beat. so when is the deadline?

(not sure I am doing it. might heed abaddon and evolve one of his creatures)
Cool. More evil stuff.

Really, you should use the update(edit button)for the genes, i don't really understand where stinging tenticles come from
He does...

I agree with you dude.

Ok, i will evove a creature....

Changing lung finner seams feasable..
LungScraper :Charles Li
Evolved from: lung finner
Gene added : Scrape, sliding (Like crawling, but works better in slightly moist contions, is it doesn't work, crawling will do)x1 Water Reetenciton x1
Genes (14): Skeleton x1, Jaws x1, Plant Eating x3, Swimming x2, Eyes x1, Gills x1, Water Retention x2, Scrapeslidingx1, Crawlingx1, Lungs x2
Description : With a longer time allowed for breahing out of water, it is soon time for a creater more at home on land than in the water, still, it can scrapeslide into water or onto land when ever it wantsAlbeir, a very unusual way to travel (pushing with legs and sliding, like penguians) withit's water retention abilitys almost doubled in effeciancy. Now, their Suriving on land ability matches the allowance to survive on land, and the lung crawler found a new nich... Fast escape from/to land

oh nice someone evolving from my Finner line ^^ thought changing it's name to Lung Crawler... heh... well have fun :p

lung Scraper! lung crawler's comming next (unless Scrapsliding can't be used.... if then how penguins do it?)

I'd think it could just be called crawling... then again, penguins, seals, mesozoic marine reptiles all did it as secondary or tertiary means of transportation, so I think it should be good.

Thanks! Scraping is faster than others but only with a slight moisture.
although it should be only evovable if The creature has Crawing/walkinbf and drifting/swimming, to be consistant.... is a walker that can scrape slide into the ocean to escape from to be eaten to be killed by drowning? or a water retainer thet slided out but got caught at high tide and deaded when the retaining effects lose out? I don't think That is a good evolution, so a creature need a way to move on land and in the water to develop theis gene

Channel 80 249 News- With Cralter Wonkyte

And the controversy is still raging over Epsilon Menelcari's sudden withdrawal from their host position for the upcoming Galactic Games. Aligned forces have prepared military force, but the Menelcari system remains steadfast. We can only hope that peacekeeping forces can diffuse the situation quickly...

But in lighter news, we have this report from our nature correspondant, Quintillian.

*View pans into a small, blue and white orb with hints of brown and green*

This- is Delta Panzerus. A world which remains almost conspicuous in its inconspicuity. It is famous in the scientific community, as one of the galaxy's oldest planet preservations and as a massive lab for the study of evolution and genetic inheritance in a feral environment. However, trouble had come to this pristine world from outside.

A smuggling ring, was stealing away local flora, on behalf of the Exotic Xenopharmacists Union. On Delta Panzerus, there is a particular type of treelike structure known as a 'Fanel'. They grow tendrils which affect the minds of those around them through physical contact. These tendrils do it through the release of exotic chemicals which affect the hypothalami of the local fauna.

An unscrupulous scientist, seeing the commercial potential of these things as a diet drug, began illegally harvesting them and selling them underground to the aforementioned union. The tendrils were then sold as 'organic medicine', under the name 'Snaxol'. Quickly, a huge demand appeared, in the 'afraid of artificial medicine and too weak-willed to diet' segment. A huge underground harvesting and smuggling ring quickly appeared. The scientists monitoring the planet didn't actually notice this harvest (they descend to the planet's surface only when necessary, to avoid disturbing the environment) for years, until on one routine survey they discovered that many of the Fanels had been simply cut off. Many more were cut down, harvested, then simply left to rot. This wanton and careless habitat destruction wreaked havoc with the local ecosystem. Local Clepsurytes and Scensurytes were rendered homeless, and their populations plummeted. Whole rivers were clogged with debris and erosion raged out of control. All of this in barely a Panzerian decade.

However, the local inhabitants weren't going to let them get away this easily.

Dolosytes, the dominant land predators, quickly realized the food potential of the huge, but soft visitors. We have some video footage of their 'welcome', and we warn some of our more queasy viewers to look away.

A landing craft stands motionless in a clear-cut area. Several blue-green insect-like figures, roughly half a meter tall, join into a group nearby. They walk towards the alien craft, exploring its outsides. Two move into the open hatch, while the others spread out. Some hide in the surviving underbrush, others follow a path of footprints off the camera.

Time Lapse.

A harvesting craft lands, spitting out several defoliated logs as it does. Three figures step out of the vehicle, each carrying a large bag filled with tendrils. Suddenly, two Dolosytes burst out from behind them. Two panicked and fled (one dropping his bag), while a third had the two creatures leap on him. Swift attacks to the lower torso leave him collapsed on the ground. The Dolosytes try to pursue the last two, but are outrun. One returns to finish off the fallen smuggler, the other move at top speed towards the landing ship.

As the first two smugglers enter the walkway, a single Dolosyte leaps out from a high shelf and catches one one the shoulder. The man lets out a scream of pain and falls off the side of the ramp, landing hard on his back and going still. The second Dolosyte attacks the man's face for good measure.

Camera Switches to Internal View.

The last survivor races towards the cockpit, where he searches desperately for a weapon. From behind, a Dolosyte approaches. It attacks his thigh, and with a shout of pain the man spins around and smashes at the creature's neck with a heavy metal bar. The Dolosyte shrieks and falls dead. The man grunts with pain as he pulls the dead creature's spine from his leg- but as he looks down, two more Dolosytes attack. His torso is punctured from behind, and he falls down on the dead animal. The predators make short work of his remaining hold on life.

All around the ship, new tribes of Dolocytes, Nekes, and even scavenging Respirytes arrive to feast. Cavorytes peek out of their safe burrows, waiting for nightfall to come and claim their share.

A payback, of sorts. For all they have taken, their own biomass will be recycled into the environment.

Though the vigilante actions of the local wildlife did indeed help, it was the swift actions of the scientists which saved the Fanel ecosystem. A blockade was immediately set up over the planet, preventing any new smugglers from arriving, or current ones from escaping.

Meanwhile, medical tests on the Drug Snaxol revealed a horrible truth. While the drug could be used to control the desire for food, it also became enormously addictive over time, creating near-total reliance on the substance. It also created a massive desire to eat fruit, one so strong that, when coupled with the fact that the users of the drug lacked self-control, it could totally undo the effects of the diet and lead people to early deaths from fruit-related obesity and overstuffed digestive tracts.

The drug was immediately cracked down upon, and was soon purged from the market. The Exotic Xenopharmacists Union was pushed nearly to bankruptcy by countless lawsuits from the relatives of the victims.

So ends a story of exotic planets, aliens, drugs, and money. Delta Panzerus is recovering naturally, though it will be centuries before the ecosystem has restabilized itself. The smugglers have all been arrested, or have simply disappeared from open society. No more people will die due to Snaxol, and the careless Union which allowed its sale is currently undergoing a leadership replacement.

Quintillian, nature correspondant, signing out.

Wel, thank you very much for that story. Next up- the Economy. The Arkazian Snixfargle, and how it is holding out against the new United Galactic Dollar. After these messages.

I thought about it, my animal should be called scraping finner since all i gets is water retanance (skin)and scrapesliding(smoth underside)
vote for Lung Scraper
or Lung crawler
or Scraper finner
sayit!

Prime Finner : Erez87
Evolved from: Pro-Finner
Genes (8): Skeleton x1, Plankton Eating x1, Swimming x2, Eyes x1, Gills x2
Gene added (max 2): Plant Eating x2
Description (optional): The Prime Finner lost much plankton fields to the Wavy family and had to find a new source of energy. It found it in plant life. And as one of the only swimming plant life eaters, it had almost no competition.

Where would this family go next? Only one knows ...

OOC: This is my planned evolution tree. I do hope to make most of it come true :p It's long because it's almost in the times each will apeare hopefully.

The finneers got on land!
Anyway, i decided to keep the old finner name.... Scraper Finner (They are growing so fast! :weep:) Now THISISNOTAWASTEDPOST! pluse, they are fast wetween the land-sea transaction.... wonder if they will become ambush flesh eaters with
Spoiler :
eysight, fangs, crawling, scrapsliding, skeleton, complex musle, flesheating and flesh eatingx2 omivorex1.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm well.... i hope no one steels it

Yuckius Jawus: BananaLee
Evolved from: Yuckius Yummius Experimentus
Genes Added: Jaws +1, Flesh Eating +1
Description: YJ see skeleton. YJ hungry. YJ chomp.

EDIT: How would I know the flesh-eating can sustain the creature enough to warrant getting rid of the planktonation?

Daft, I am going to rejoin this in the near future. I do not have time to keep up with at the moment :). You have done a great job with this and I hope it is still here when I get back!

* 24 hour warning * Please post any more species within 24 hours if you want them to go into the update *

I really liked Grombar and Lord_Iggy's stories :)

@TerrisH, sorry if ive been to critical of your stuff. I think the linking fanel would work, especially if it is based on chemicals like in Iggy's story. I might make something like that as an NPC evolution.

@Charles Li, im not sure if 'scrapesliding' should be separate from crawling. Ive tried to keep things together and not get too specific, otherwise there would be hundreds and hundreds of different 'genes' already. Hope its ok if i make it into 'crawling' instead.

I think it could sustain it now, if its going up to level 2 with your new evolution. I didnt imagine the Yuckius being very fast moving or doing anything particularly strenuous, except breeding :). I see it as a hunter of small animals hidden among plants and rocks, stuff that other hunters tend to ignore because they are more active and have larger appetites.

Thursday, hopefully. Friday at the latest.

Thanks :salute: i plan to keep this going for a long time, tho not as fast paced as it was at the start...

Anyway, you don't have to read the updates, you could just randomly add some stuff to your species :p
