BBC said:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of "encouraging terror".

Referring to the Palestinians, Mr Ban said it was human nature for oppressed peoples to react to occupation.

Speaking at the UN Security Council, Mr Ban also condemned recent stabbings of Israelis by Palestinians.

More than 155 Palestinians, 28 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean have died in violence since October.

"The comments of the UN secretary general encourage terror," Mr Netanyahu said in a statement. "There is no justification for terror."

So cautious in his use of language for so long, Mr Ban seems determined to speak more plainly as he prepares to leave office, says the BBC's Nick Bryant in New York.

On Monday, a 24-year-old Israeli woman was fatally stabbed in a West Bank settlement - the third such attack in 10 days. The two Palestinian assailants were shot dead by a security guard.

Most of the Palestinians killed have been attackers, Israel says, while others have been shot dead by Israeli forces during protests and clashes.

Mr Ban told the Security Council the wave of attacks was driven by a "profound sense of alienation and despair" among some Palestinians, particularly the young.

"Palestinian frustration is growing under the weight of a half century of occupation and the paralysis of the peace process," he said.

"As oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation, which often serves as a potent incubator of hate and extremism."

He condemned the attacks but said Israel's settlement-building programme cast doubt on its commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state.

But Mr Netanyahu accused the Palestinians of working against the creation of a state.

"The Palestinian murderers do not want to build a state, they want to destroy a state and they say it out loud," he said.

"They do not murder for peace and they do not murder for human rights," he added.

He said the UN had lost its neutrality and moral force a long time ago.

Ronald S Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, said Mr Ban's remarks were a "dangerous justification of terrorism".

"It is extremely worrying and shocking that the leader of the international community has chosen to excuse the inexcusable," Mr Lauder added.

US-backed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed in 2014.

The Palestinians complained that Israel was building settlements on land they claim for a future state.

Israel has approved the construction of 153 new settler homes in the West Bank, the NGO Peace Now said on Monday.

The move marked the end of an informal construction freeze in the West Bank that lasted for 18 months, Peace Now added.

Is Ban Ki Moon "encouraging terror"? Is it acceptable for people to resort to violence when they believe diplomatic and peaceful avenues have failed to resolve problems? Can the half-dead dinosaur that is the "peace process" lurch back to life if Netanyahu and the Likud party are ousted next Israeli election?

Do we need to explain the difference between "justification" and "explanation" again?

Ever notice how rogue states always hate the UN?

I vaguely remember something about Israeli generals saying that the stabbings were done out of sheer despair. Anyone else recall that?

It would make sense, considering how hopeless the situation is for your average young Palestinian man and how angry they are with the whole situation. Not that I'm defending stabbing random civilians, of course. But look how well not being that violent is working for the West Bank; they're being illegally pushed off their land by waves of Israeli colonists.

I recall Netanyahu saying pretty much the same things when defending his massacre of belgian occupied territories civilians as a leader of a german warband in ww1 :p

Serving capital punishment to scoundrels who stab civilians is called justice in my books.

That is justice but dosnt exactly solve the underlying cause(s).
Prevention is better than cure

I would be surprised if this were anything Israeli intelligence and military reports weren't saying to his government themselves.

Netanyahu is right. Ban's statements are unacceptable. Not only are they factually incorrect, but morally reprehensible, since they indeed are likely to encourage yet more of the insane violence and terrorism we have been seeing from the Palestinians for several months now. Ban should be ashamed of himself and resign immediately.

^So israeli policemen shooting down protesters (not stabbers) is just fine, but the un secretary stating the obvious 'half a century of occupation makes the occupied hateful and leads to violence' is haram?

Remind me again just why Israel is the planet's business again? That state is more dangerous than Saudi, and both are still good US/England allies.

You should have put this in spoilers, so we could guess what you said.

Oh.

Wait.

Guess that wouldn't have been enough of a challenge to be interesting.

Rogue states gotta stick together.

By using the term "occupation", Ban displays historical ignorance of a scale which is utterly embarassing for a person in his position. This alone is a sufficient reason for him to resign. There is a country in the region which has indeed been occupied for over 40 years, namely Cyprus by the Turks. Yet we don't see oppressed Cypriots randomly stabbing Turkish citizens. Israel, on the other hand, is extremely generous towards the Palestinians. They are allowed treatment in Israeli hospitals. They are free to pass through (and many even to live in) the country (while vice versa this would be unthinkable). They were offered the Gaza Strip in an extremely gracious act of generosity. There have been many two-state proposals in the past which were very beneficial for the Palestinians, which they all rejected. The thanks for this extreme benevolence of the Israelis has been countless barbaric attacks, ruthless terrorism, the murdering of Israeli civilians, massive and disgusting anti-Jewish propaganda, and for a few months now insane knife attacks on innocent civilians, including children and elderly women.

"Hey here's this extremely small amount of land, you can have it, after we've kicked you out of your homes and colonised the area" Extreme benevolence? Seriously?

What? Israel doesn't have nuclear weapons.

What? Israel doesn't have nuclear weapons.

If their backers are scared enough, they may try to media-alternate reality this enough into having people think that Israel has nukes (despite no tests run; think of it as a reverse Iraq's WMDs ;) )

Imo Israel and Saudi must be changed, cause as they are there will never be peace in the middle east. Our planet has turned into stupid-land due to this prolonged issue as well.
